Steven L. Spiegel is professor of political science at the University of California, Los Angeles. He has written extensively on international politics, American foreign policy, and the Middle East.

A grubby business, made in America

This is an account of American policy toward the Middle East from the early part of the 20th C through the early Reagan years. This history is, understandably, sketched in a few brief notes from Wilson to Truman, whereupon it demands a detailed examination, and it gets it.
The author starts off by enumerating several important factors over time: ambitions for global dominance by the USA , regional concerns centering around oil, and an increasing involvement with the State of Israel. Then there are groups in the USA that have special interests, oil men and American Jews being important examples.
But the author does not claim that what was current when he wrote the book was inevitable; it was a series of deliberate decisions by agents, American policy makers, especially the President, but by no means only him. As object, the State of Israel looms largest, and it is clear that the author is to a great degree a partisan of that country.
Not without an establishment tendency, but a valuable summary of American international politics, mostly beyond the ken and interest of the American people, conducted among the President and a Congress that was unadmirable, mostly, but superior to the paid-off media celebrities we have now, and various offshore actors who were good at manipulating them.
