A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, Seventh Edition: Chicago Style for Students and Researchers (Chicago Gu

Dewey, Bellow, Strauss, Friedman--the University of Chicago has been the home of some of the most important thinkers of the modern age. But perhaps no name has been spoken with more respect than Turabian.

The dissertation secretary at Chicago for decades, Kate L. Turabian literally wrote the book on the successful completion and submission of the student paper. Her Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, created from her years of experience with research projects across all fields, has sold more than seven million copies since it was first published in 1937.

Now, with this seventh edition, "Turabian's Manual" has undergone its most extensive revision, ensuring that it will remain the most valuable handbook for writers at every level--from first-year undergraduates, to dissertation writers apprehensively submitting final manuscripts, to senior scholars who may be old hands at research and writing but less familiar with new media citation styles. Gregory G. Colomb, Joseph M. Williams, and the late Wayne C. Booth--the gifted team behind The Craft of Research--and the University of Chicago Press Editorial Staff combined their wide-ranging expertise to remake this classic resource. They preserve Turabian's clear and practical advice while fully embracing the new modes of research, writing, and source citation brought about by the age of the Internet.

From Booklist
First published in 1937, Turabian's manual has been updated to reflect the fifteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style (2003) as well as the habits and needs of today's students. The chapter on source citation now includes sections on online databases, e-books, and "informally published electonic sources." A new and lengthy part 1, "Researching and Writing: From Planning to Production," cautions researchers to "beware of Wikipedia" and "never cite it as an authoritative source." Another caution: citation software "may save time, but it is not a substitute for knowing the underlying principles of the style." Quinn, Mary Ellen

7th Edition of Turabian Is a Great Improvement
By Blakely Walter
The 7th edition of Kate L. Turabian's A Manual for Writers features significant new material, a more user-friendly arrangement, much-needed rules for online resources, and an eye-friendly, two-tone typeset format.

Editors Booth, Colomb, and Williams have adapted material from their The Craft of Research and inserted it as Part I of the 7th edition. Researchers now get both a style guide and a research guide in one book.

The three-part format for the 7th edition also makes it easier to navigate. Part I is the new research guide; Part II is the rules for source citation; Part III is the style guide. In the 6th edition, the first chapter was a guide to the parts of a research paper which then had to be compared to the formats and sample layouts in the last chapter. The new edition combines all this material together in Appendix A along with instructions that are updated to reflect common word processor settings. And the index at the back of the volume now references items by page number rather than chapter and section, a great improvement in my opinion.

The 7th edition brings Turabian up-to-date by including rules and examples for citing online sources. Part II also separates the instructions for notes/bibliography style from the instructions for parenthetical/reference list style. What had been a completely separate chapter for citing public documents is now helpfully included with the rest of the citation rules. Part II of edition 7 now includes over 100 pages of citation examples compared to the 26 pages in chapter 11 of the 6th edition.

One weakness that is not corrected in the new edition is that Turabian's official stance for encyclopedias and other reference works is still that they should only be cited in notes. (17.5.3, p.191) Nothing acknowledges the difficulties of citing scholarly encyclopedia or dictionary references where signed articles are the norm. One can, however, adapt the instructions for edited collections on p.179 to sufficiently cite academic reference works.

Finally, the blue-and-black typesetting makes it much easier to distinguish in-text examples and to move one's eye from section to section.

It is fitting that the 7th edition has been published on the 20th anniversary of Kate Turabian's death. The many improvements in this edition will ensure its place on student bookshelves for years to come.

Nerds of the world, rejoice!
By Erik Young
I have owned the Sixth Edition of Turabian for about five years and it has been used to the point of disintegration. I was excited about the new edition and when I received it I was elated to find that the Chicago Style Manual was included with the writer's manual. The editors have updated the manual to include citation of electronic sources which, if you have been doing any academic writing recently, has been a matter of preference. The two-color priniting makes section headings easier to find as you are leafing through the pages. The editors have included a bibliography divided into various disciplines that provides some suggestions for further research. Overall, I am enjoying using the new manual. The biggest downside is that I am having to relearn the section headings that I have grown familiar with over the past five years. Small price to pay for the added advantage of having the Chicago Style Manual at my fingertips.

Nerds, do yourselves a favor and update your Turabian manual. You won't be sorry.

8th edition is legit!!
By Coyote
I upgraded to the 8th edition after my 7th edition was completely worn out- too much use. The 8th is more concise and easy to use as well as includes more citation information for electronic sources, etc.

Money Has No Smell: The Africanization of New York City, by Paul Stoller

In February 1999 the tragic New York City police shooting of Amadou Diallo, an unarmed street vendor from Guinea, brought into focus the existence of West African merchants in urban America. In Money Has No Smell, Paul Stoller offers us a more complete portrait of the complex lives of West African immigrants like Diallo, a portrait based on years of research Stoller conducted on the streets of New York City during the 1990s.

Blending fascinating ethnographic description with incisive social analysis, Stoller shows how these savvy West African entrepreneurs have built cohesive and effective multinational trading networks, in part through selling a simulated Africa to African Americans. These and other networks set up by the traders, along with their faith as devout Muslims, help them cope with the formidable state regulations and personal challenges they face in America. As Stoller demonstrates, the stories of these West African traders illustrate and illuminate ongoing debates about globalization, the informal economy, and the changing nature of American communities.

From Library Journal
This urban ethnography explores the informal multinational and multiethnic economy of West African street vendors in New York City. The title refers to the vendors' business philosophy that religious, political, or ethnic differences should not interfere with their goal of making a profit, necessary not only to support themselves but also their African families. Anthropologist Stoller provides the cultural and historical context needed to understand how West African trading practices and Islamic traditions are incorporated into the challenges of the New York City environment. His narrative style nicely interweaves individual stories with theory about the social, political, and economic adaptations of immigrant communities and demonstrates the impact of globalization on all types of economies formal and informal, large and small. Additionally, this ethnography is a fine example of how traditional anthropological fieldwork fits into a complex urban setting. Prolific author Stoller (e.g., Jaguar: A Story of Africans in America) has worked with the Songay-speaking peoples of Niger for three decades, and the depth of his experience is evident here. Highly recommended for all academic collections.

Review
"Through this extraordinary study, Stoller succeeds in showing us how globalization is changing today's urban worlds. To do this he has to negotiate multiple levels of analysis, from the ethnographic detail of a vendor's sidewalk spot to that of the trading networks that connect across the Atlantic. This is a major contribution to the scholarship on immigration, the informal economy, and global cities." - Saskia Sassen, author of Guests and Aliens

Pecunia Non Olet
By Etienne RP
An old Latin saying, Pecunia non olet, translates as "Money has no odor". Originally related to the urine tax levied by Roman emperors upon the collection of urine in public latrines, it means that the value of money is not tainted by its origins. West African street peddlers in New York City use this ancient adage to justify why they sell baseball caps ornamented with foul language, or African statues and masks that these pious Moslems associate with idolatry and refer to simply as "wood". They also feel no qualms about selling bootlegged videos, unlicensed merchandise, and fake fashion goods, but they make it clear to their clients that they are not selling the originals. They believe in honesty in transactions, and avoid everything that reeks of "funny business".

For the tourists and African Americans who patronize their stalls, their replication of an African market in Harlem has a "smell": indeed, the buyers are in for the exoticism, and they want to experience a piece of Africa in New York City. Growing out from illegal stalls and having gone through several relocations, the African street market has become one of the city's tourist attractions. Some African American clients are on a quest for origins: they are looking after their African roots, and West African merchants have turned that longing for African origins into a commercial operation. They sell a commodified version of Afrocentrism, a specific ideological orientation that exerts a profound influence on African American sociocultural life. Associated with the figure of Malcolm X, Afrocentrism has been developed into a body of doctrine by scholars such as Molefi Asante who are tracing its roots to the ancient civilization of Egypt. It has led to the invention of modern rituals and traditions such as the festival of Kwanzaa, a seven-day African American holiday celebrated between Christmas and the New Year. Of course, for West African merchants in New York, the meaning of Kwanzaa has little cultural resonance; it is not so much a sacred celebration as a simulation of Africa that is good for business.

The story of "kente" cloth illustrates how commodities are created and transformed by transnational networks that use the Afrocentric ideology as a source of profit. Kente is the name of a colorful, intricate, handwoven silk cloth traditionally worn by Asante nobles in Ghana on ceremonial occasions. The antique clothes are colored with vegetable dyes of deep blue, yellow, green, and red hues and are stitched in subtle and elegant patterns. Silk and rayon kente strips--handwoven but admittedly inferior to the original cloths--gradually became popular in the United States. Many icons of African American cultural life began to wear these kente strips as scarves--colorful material badges of African identity. Sometime in the early 1990s, enterprising Koreans entrepreneurs saw an opportunity. Working from photographs of handwoven Ghanaian silk kente, they designed a cotton print cloth version--for a fraction of the original's cost. Small textile factories in New Jersey began to mass produce them, and they were then transformed into "kente" cloth caps, sports jackets with "kente" cloth lapels, as well as dresses, skirts, and trousers.

The story doesn't end here: the success of New Jersey "kente" shocked the African textile industry into action. Ghanaian textile factories reproduced the cloth design, undercutting the costs, and shipped it to New York City as well as to other West African markets, where the cloths were transformed in low-cost textile mills. The "Ghanaian" reproduction of kente, whatever its origin, surpassed the New Jersey version in quality at a cheaper price. Asian entrepreneurs in lower Manhattan also bought bolts of fabric from African wholesalers and transformed it into caps and cheap clothing in downtown sweatshops manned by Asian immigrants. And soon African "kente" was back on the streets of Harlem, peddled by West African cloth merchants and street vendors, and sold mostly to African Americans in search of authenticity. As the book notes, "this confluence of symbolic contradiction is a small reminder of how the flow of money, goods, and people across increasingly fragmented spaces is transforming social landscapes, making them less bounded, more confusing."

Paul Stoller, the author of this ethnographic study, is on a different quest. Before conducting fieldwork through participant observation in street markets in New York City, his research experience had been in the rural western region of the Republic of Niger, where he studied symbolic interactions and religious practices in ethnically diverse villages. His familiarity with the Nigerien cultural context, and knowledge of the Songhay language as well as of French, gained him acceptance among the Francophone African merchants, otherwise suspicious of outside interference that may draw attention to their undocumented status. His informants were apparently happy to have him hang around, discuss their lives, and accompany them in various business transactions or administrative formalities. One goes so far as to suggest to him to change career and become a diplomat: "You know, you should come to Côte d'Ivoire or better yet, to Niger, and give out visas. With someone who understands our ways as well as you do, it would be very good for business."

The Africanization of New York City refers to the ways West African immigrants recreate part of their communal life in their new environment. As the author shows, the street markets are organized like many West African markets, where the space is often apportioned and regulated through informal mechanisms. Members of the same ethnic group or place of origin usually occupy contiguous space and sell the same kind of merchandise. In Manhattan, the aristocracy of street vendors is formed by the Senegalese, often members of the Mourid religious brotherhood, who were the first to migrate and who established a lock on informal vending space. Kinship, ethnicity, and nationality also directly affect the density of contacts and degree of trust and cooperation, which is bolstered by Islamic morality. Practices of long-distance trade in West Africa is also reproduced in the United States, where merchants from the same kinship network or ethnic group often pool resources and travel to what they call the "American bush", peddling their wares in African American festivals or Third World commercial fairs.

The author is also interested in describing the global forces that have compelled these merchants to leave West Africa and develop their trade in the streets of New York. Most West African traders come to the United States as single men, leaving behind their wives, children, parents, and complex extended families. Most of them are undocumented immigrants; this means they may avoid going to physicians, postpone English instruction at night schools, keep their proceeds in cash rather than bank accounts, and fail to report the theft of inventory. As the author writes, "they work, eat, and sleep with only the slightest exposure to American social life. They count their days in America, waiting to have made enough money to return home with honor." Having completed this detailed ethnography, the reader may agree with the author that "There is something heroic about this group of West African traders."

A great book for African/ African-American studies.

This book was assigned as part of a senior seminar in African and African-American Studies at my university. This ethnographic work is fascinating and perfect for understanding connections between Africans and African-Americans, as well as explorations regarding globalization.

“Parker . . . lumbers through the pages of Richard Stark’s noir novels scattering dead bodies like peanut shells. . . . In a complex world [he] makes things simple.”
(William Grimes New York Times)

“Whatever Stark writes, I read. He’s a stylist, a pro, and I thoroughly enjoy his attitude.”
(Elmore Leonard)

“Richard Stark’s Parker novels . . . are among the most poised and polished fictions of their time and, in fact, of any time.”
(John Banville Bookforum)

“Parker is a true treasure. . . . The master thief is back, along with Richard Stark.”
(Marilyn Stasio New York Times)

“Westlake knows precisely how to grab a reader, draw him or her into the story, and then slowly tighten his grip until escape is impossible.”
(Washington Post)

“Elmore Leonard wouldn’t write what he does if Stark hadn’t been there before. And Quentin Tarantino wouldn’t write what he does without Leonard. . . . Old master that he is, Stark does all of them one better.”
(Los Angeles Times)

“Donald Westlake’s Parker novels are among the small number of books I read over and over. Forget all that crap you’ve been telling yourself about War and Peace and Proust—these are the books you’ll want on that desert island.”
(Lawrence Block)

"Parker is a brilliant invention. . . . What chiefly distinguishes Westlake, under whatever name, is his passion for process and mechanics. . . . Parker appears to have eliminated everything from his program but machine logic, but this is merely protective coloration. He is a romantic vestige, a free-market anarchist whose independent status is becoming a thing of the past."
(Luc Sante New York Times Book Review)

"I wouldn't care to speculate about what it is in Westlake's psyche that makes him so good at writing about Parker, much less what it is that makes me like the Parker novels so much. Suffice it to say that Stark/Westlake is the cleanest of all noir novelists, a styleless stylist who gets to the point with stupendous economy, hustling you down the path of plot so briskly that you have to read his books a second time to appreciate the elegance and sober wit with which they are written."
(Terry Teachout Commentary)

"If you're a fan of noir novels and haven't yet read Richard Stark, you may want to give these books a try. Who knows? Parker may just be the son of a bitch you've been searching for."
(John McNally Virginia Quarterly Review)

"The University of Chicago Press has recently undertaken a campaign to get Parker back in print in affordable and handsome editions, and I dove in. And now I get it."
(Josef Braun Vue Weekly)

"Whether early or late, the Parker novels are all superlative literary entertainments."
(Terry Teachout Weekly Standard)

“The UC Press mission, to reprint the 1960s Parker novels of Richard Stark (the late Donald Westlake), is wholly admirable. The books have been out of print for decades, and the fast-paced, hard-boiled thrillers featuring the thief Parker are brilliant.”
(H. J. Kirchoff Globe and Mail)

A great Parker score
By D. Rahmel
The robbery of an armored truck goes fine, but the loot is less than expected. One of the robbers decides that he wants the whole pot and tries to kill his partners -- but Parker gets away. Since he had never worked with the heister before, Parker has to chase down many loose ends to locate his money and gain his revenge.

Parker is not at his most ruthless in this one. In fact, he even demonstrates some compassion in one excellent, interesting scene. This Parker story really kept me going. It's brief and the pages speed by. There is more sex in the story than usual, but it's tasteful and very well written. Be sure to add this one to your Parker collection.

The lesson of the master
By Christopher (o.d.c.)
Just because you're having a bad day doesn't mean things can't get worse. This is how Stark ends chapter three:

(The heist is successful, but the take is only $33,000, split four ways)
“You know what kind of day this is?” Weiss said. “I'll tell you what kind of day this is. The kind of day this is, we'll come down off this hill a couple days from now, the government will have devalued the dollar. How much is singles and fives?”
“Maybe a thousand,” Parker said.
“Another two hundred fifty dollars bye-bye,” Weiss said, and Uhl shot him in the head.

... which really gets the ball rolling. Every Parker novel can be read once as a fast-paced pulp thriller. Read a second time, they reveal Stark as a classicist: teaching in a restrained and clear-eyed way the virtues of restraint and clear-sightedness:

There was a long, taut second when it could go either way—she could fall to the floor or go on making the coffee—and then she sighed, a long, shuddering sound, and shifted her weight and reached for the coffeepot.
Still with her back to him, hands busy making the coffee, she said, “That wouldn't be why you're here. Not just to tell me about it. You aren't the type, Parker. You never were, you never will be.”
“That's right,” Parker said.
“You're strictly business,” she said.
“I didn't kill him,” Parker said. “Don't take it out on me.”
She stopped what she was doing and just stood there for a minute. Then, in a muffled voice, she said, “Excuse me,” and hurried from the room, keeping her face turned away from him.

The form Stark/Westlake invented for Parker novels- three parts from Parker's point-of-view, and a middle section of five or six other points-of-view, does not hinder the story at all, and in fact, speeds it along. Stark also creates several females here, from Weiss's widow to Barri the ballerina, none of them pulp cliches, or male fantasies.

Parker Gets Bitter Toward Those Who Try and Kill Him and Steal or Want to His Money
By James N Simpson
Twelfth novel in Donald E Westlake's (a.k.a. Richard Stark) sensational Parker series, The Sour Lemon Score is pure vengeance novel. Parker's part of a four man criminal gang who rob a crate of money being carried from a bank's vault to an armoured car outside. Heist goes smoothly, even with a panicking member. Unfortunately that panicking member of the group, George Uhl, brought along his own plans to murder the other three at the isolated farmhouse where they were to lay low until the heat died down, and take all the cash for himself. Of course as the main character of this series Parker narrowly escapes with his life, but he's in for a long hungry wait and walk until he can escape the area and likelihood of arrest. This of course contributes to the anger and desire for revenge on Uhl, and to get his money back. Problem for Parker though is that since Uhl was pretty much a rookie, and brought in by a dead member of the group, it's not going to be easy to track him down, so Parker's going to have to do a lot of legwork, and make a few people unhappy along the way.

The Sour Lemon Score has a lot of action, and lot of inside the head reasoning and thought patterns of Parker and also uses a lot of nice nostalgia references to really illustrate the time it is set in (it was originally published 1969). Such as a radio voice saying the old "this just in" line before reporting on the robbery. A gun dealer asking Parker if he'd like string put around the boxes containing guns he'd bought (like we're asked if you'd like a bag today). During the initial robbery one of the criminals yelling 'stick em up" and the victims not even laughing one bit at the line. Parker makes a few stupid mistakes that maybe he wouldn't make in other books in this series, a lot coming from him being rather impatient at times such as not wanting to wait a few hours for a go between to return to his store. You do also wonder why he wasn't just shot and killed in one scene as later in the book that character admits he has no qualms with murder and the alternative is a lot less convenient than simple murder, plus they'd know Parker will just come back for revenge. Without these things the enjoyable plot wouldn't work though.

Next novel in the series is Deadly Edge.

A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, Eighth Edition: Chicago Style for Students and Researchers (Chicago Gui

A little more than seventy-five years ago, Kate L. Turabian drafted a set of guidelines to help students understand how to write, cite, and formally submit research writing. Seven editions and more than nine million copies later, the name Turabian has become synonymous with best practices in research writing and style. Her Manual for Writers continues to be the gold standard for generations of college and graduate students in virtually all academic disciplines. Now in its eighth edition, A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations has been fully revised to meet the needs of today’s writers and researchers.

The Manual retains its familiar three-part structure, beginning with an overview of the steps in the research and writing process, including formulating questions, reading critically, building arguments, and revising drafts. Part II provides an overview of citation practices with detailed information on the two main scholarly citation styles (notes-bibliography and author-date), an array of source types with contemporary examples, and detailed guidance on citing online resources.

The final section treats all matters of editorial style, with advice on punctuation, capitalization, spelling, abbreviations, table formatting, and the use of quotations. Style and citation recommendations have been revised throughout to reflect the sixteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style. With an appendix on paper format and submission that has been vetted by dissertation officials from across the country and a bibliography with the most up-to-date listing of critical resources available, A Manual for Writers remains the essential resource for students and their teachers.

"In addition to featuring new templates for citing e-books, websites, blogs, social networks, discussion groups, online videos, and podcasts, the eighth edition offers new general advice to help students make good decisions about what information to include for online sources that may not have all the traditional elements useful in citing a print source. . . . 8th edition is legit!!
By Coyote
I upgraded to the 8th edition after my 7th edition was completely worn out- too much use. The 8th is more concise and easy to use as well as includes more citation information for electronic sources, etc.

Required information in an awkward form (Kindle)
By Amazon Customer
I purchased this edition of Turabian as a Kindle book. I own several earlier editions in paper but needed a more current one to match references from an editor. The update is good in terms addressing several modern reference techniques in bibliography and footnote format. But the Kindle edition is difficult to navigate to the extent that it is nearly useless. If you do not need to use Turabian, count yourself lucky. If you are forced to use it, then purchase a paper copy.

Culture and Power: The Sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, by David Swartz

Pierre Bourdieu is one of the world's most important social theorists and is also one of the great empirical researchers in contemporary sociology. However, reading Bourdieu can be difficult for those not familiar with the French cultural context, and until now a comprehensive introduction to Bourdieu's oeuvre has not been available.

David Swartz focuses on a central theme in Bourdieu's work—the complex relationship between culture and power—and explains that sociology for Bourdieu is a mode of political intervention. Swartz clarifies Bourdieu's difficult concepts, noting where they have been misinterpreted by critics and where they have fallen short in resolving important analytical issues. The book also shows how Bourdieu has synthesized his theory of practices and symbolic power from Durkheim, Marx, and Weber, and how his work was influenced by Sartre, Levi-Strauss, and Althusser.

Culture and Power is the first book to offer both a sympathetic and critical examination of Bourdieu's work and it will be invaluable to social scientists as well as to a broader audience in the humanities.

From a student to a student:
By KJo
If you need to learn about Pierre Bourdieu, this book is fantastic! I had to read this book for a class, but it was one of the most clear, thought-provoking, and understandable syntheses of a theorist's works that I've ever read. If only such a book existed for Foucault or any of the other theorists and philosophers that I've had to struggle through, only understanding half of it! After reading this book, I feel that I actually, clearly understand the theory of Bourdieu.

Great introduction to Bourdieu
By M. Malyk
This is a great way to get acquainted with Bourdieu's work on culture and power. Swartz provides an excellent overview of key concepts such as "symbolic capital", "habitus", "field" and "symbolic violence". This work definitely makes Bourdieu more readable, but it is no mere Cliff Notes -- there is a critical and analytical component to Swartz' treatise that invites the reader to not just take the given theories at face value but examine past criticisms these theories have drawn.

This is essential reading for sociology grad students and anyone looking for a comprehensive and comprehensible introduction to Bourdieu's scholarship. Bourdieu's own work is brilliant but is not easy reading. Swartz eases the reader into Bourdieu's world of thought, and once you are hooked, reading Bourdieu himself becomes worth the trouble.

Brilliant, critical synthesis of Pierre Bourdieu's sociology
By A Customer
Swartz has done a masterful job in bringing Bourdieu's complicated thought and style to an Anglo-American readership. But he has gone even further in demonstrating the ways in which Bourdieu's work is problematic and/or falls short. Truly, a remarkable work of sythesis, scholarship, and critique.

Georg Simmel on Individuality and Social Forms (Heritage of Sociology Series), by Georg Simmel

"Of those who created the intellectual capital used to launch the enterprise of professional sociology, Georg Simmel was perhaps the most original and fecund. In search of a subject matter for sociology that would distinguish it from all other social sciences and humanistic disciplines, he charted a new field for discovery and proceeded to explore a world of novel topics in works that have guided and anticipated the thinking of generations of sociologists. Such distinctive concepts of contemporary sociology as social distance, marginality, urbanism as a way of life, role-playing, social behavior as exchange, conflict as an integrating process, dyadic encounter, circular interaction, reference groups as perspectives, and sociological ambivalence embody ideas which Simmel adumbrated more than six decades ago."—Donald N. Cosmopolitanism in Missouri
By An Avid Reader Telling the Truth
I had the opportunity to see Georg Simmel lecture at the Kiwanis Club in Hannibal, MO, the year before he passed away. I was only four years old at the time, but one of my earliest memories concerns his heavy tweed coat, his pince-nez, and that peculiar little accent of his, especially when he laughed. He was a fragile man: the archetypic scholar whose physical faculties emaciate as his mind grows ever stronger. I held his hand as we posed for a photograph at the urging of my father--long since lost--seated at the base of the statue I recall as "Justice Descends on the Countryside." The audience was not aware at that time that he was to die of syphilis a year later, likely contracted through contact with a prostitute or female "groupie" along the same tour (ironic given his own writings on prostitution). Because of the place where I was raised, I do not think I appreciated the urban forms of life Simmel was speaking about. It was only years later, living in Southern California during the entry of the United States into World War II, that I began to recall my adolescent copy of his essay called "The Metropolis and Mental Life." As a black man living alongside the interment of the Japanese-American community, I observed the ease with which others simply went about their daily lives and allowed racism and disposession to take on a shocking normalcy. I did not understand what I was seeing nor was I self-empowered enough at the time to speak out. I did later think of Simmel's essay. This connection was reinforced again years later when my academic daughter introduced me to the writings of Franz Fanon at the tail end of her graduate studies. A revelation! I believe Simmel was the first to write about a type of violence or indifference, a daily violence we all live by. For interested readers, I would draw your attention to a unique passage (page 17 in my copy) which I cannot claim to understand, even after all these years: "It is rather in transcending extensiveness that the metropolis also becomes the seat of cosmopolitanism. Comparable with the form of the development of wealth--(beyond a certain point property progresses in ever more rapid progression as out of its own inner being) -- the individual's horizon is enlarged. In the same way, economic, personal and intellectual relations in the city (which are its ideal reflection) grow in a geometrical progression as soon as, for the first time, a certain limit has been passed. [...] For the metropolis it is decisive that its inner life is extended in a wave-like motion over the broader national or international arena." Was Simmel speculating that the city-dwellers' "inner life" should share the blame for colonialism? If Simmel had lived longer, what would he have said about the 1922 rise to power of the Fascists in Italy? I am not a historian, but it seems like this was the opposite of the wave-like motion he describes, with a takeover of power in the coutryside first and then a march on Rome. Was this the moment in which the cosmopolitanism Simmel described that day in Hannibal, and many other days, was blindsided by more Machiavellian forces? Some younger people with whom I have had the opportunity to speak have suggested we are living through a similar moment now. This perhaps explains Simmel's enormous popularity in the age of the Internet. I am dictating this from my sickbed in La Jolla, but my great-grandson, tapping at the computer keys, tells me Simmel has reached the sales rank of 362,253 on the popular book-buying website named after a river. Way to go, Georg!

Impressionist Sociology!
By A Customer
Georg Simmel's social thought having being neglected for several decades, experiences a revival since the early nineties. A reason for this may be traced in his "gifted" - almost literary - style and in his breadth and vision regarding the state of modern urban culture. The collection of Simmel essays assembled in this volume by Donald Levine, covers a wide variety of the topics with which Simmel was preoccupied during his lifetime. One will find here Simmel's seminal work on social types, particularly on the "stranger" and the "poor". Simmel's brilliant essays on the "conflict in modern culture", the "tragedy of culture" and on the modern metropolis are included constituting essential reading for those who apart from a sociological perspective wish also to gain an aesthetic view of social reality. Simmel's intellectual roots are manifold. One can trace them back to Kant and Hegel but equally to the existentialist thinkers Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. Many of the arguments raised by Simmel in these essays bear the marks of the aforementioned philosophers while others sound incredibly relevant for today's (post)modern culture (for example the essay on "fashion" and on the "conflict in modern culture". The reader of this volume is introduced to Simmel's thought through an excellent and scholarly essay by D.Levine which also locates Simmel's sociology in the American intellectual context (i.e Parsons and Park). This collection has become a classic among Simmel scholars and it provides essential reading for sociologists and philosophers alike.

The Plight of Feeling: Sympathy and Dissent in the Early American Novel, by Julia A. Stern

American novels written in the wake of the Revolution overflow with self-conscious theatricality and impassioned excess. In The Plight of Feeling, Julia A. Stern shows that these sentimental, melodramatic, and gothic works can be read as an emotional history of the early republic, reflecting the hate, anger, fear, and grief that tormented the Federalist era.

Stern argues that these novels gave voice to a collective mourning over the violence of the Revolution and the foreclosure of liberty for the nation's noncitizens—women, the poor, Native and African Americans. Properly placed in the context of late eighteenth-century thought, the republican novel emerges as essentially political, offering its audience gothic and feminized counternarratives to read against the dominant male-authored accounts of national legitimation.

Drawing upon insights from cultural history and gender studies as well as psychoanalytic, narrative, and genre theory, Stern convincingly exposes the foundation of the republic as an unquiet crypt housing those invisible Americans who contributed to its construction.

Who is that second reader trying to kid?
By Cedric LaFarge
It's great to be reminded about all these early sentimental novels, but that's about it. So maybe the best thing about Stern's book is the bibliography. It sure isn't the prose or the insights. I was SO disappointed by this book.

Society in Action: The Theory of Social Becoming, by Piotr Sztompka

In Society in Action, Piotr Sztompka sets forth a highly topical contribution to central theoretical debates of contemporary sociology. Taking the idea and practice of collective mobilization as his theme, Sztompka argues that modern institutions, particularly of late, are characterized by an increasing awareness of collective empowerment. The most obvious concrete expression of this phenomenon, as Sztompka makes clear, is the rise of a diversity of active social movements such as those which dramatically transformed Europe in the 1980s, from the birth of Solidarity in 1980 to the 1989 "Autumn of Nations."

Sztompka connects the interpretations of such collective activity to a wider grasp of the nature of social action. The result is a comprehensive and original theory of social change which focuses on the self-transforming influence on society of its members' striving for freedom, autonomy, and self-fulfillment. He develops his theory by means of a general concept of "social becoming," the roots of which he traces to the early romantic and humanist work of Karl Marx and his followers and to two influential sociological schools of today, the theory of agency and historical sociology.

Sztompka situates his theory midway between the rigid determinism of social totalities and the unbridled voluntarism of free individuals. Social change, he demonstrates, can be understood neither as the outcome of individual actions taken alone nor as structurally determined actions. Instead, he confers upon social organizations and movements a "self-transcending" quality: they express human agency yet, by virtue of their active character, are quite often able to achieve unpredictable outcomes.

Throughout his analysis of social movements and revolutions in history, Sztompka emphasizes the dynamics of spontaneous social change generated from below—a theoretical testimony to the rapid and fundamental social change in Eastern Europe in recent history. Against the fashions of postmodernist malaise, boredom, and disenchantment, his theory of social becoming expresses the possibility of emancipation, of change leading to positive gains. His work registers a belief in progress, not inevitably gained, but its attainment fully dependent upon the creativity and optimism of an active citizenry.

'Sztompka has given us a brave synthesis ... One stands in admiration at his delicate negotiation of a path through the most enduring and tractable dilemmas of our theoretical tradition in sociology. It is too much to hope that these dilemmas will fade into obscurity as a result of Sztompka's efforts, but he has given us a creative basis for our ongoing dialogues about them.' Neil J. From the Back Cover
Society in Action is the first theoretical statement which seeks to draw general lessons for social theory from the dramatic events which transformed European history in the later 1980s. Sztompka presents a comprehensive and original theory of social change focusing on the self-transforming potential of societies evoked by the universal desires for freedom, autonomy and self-fulfilment. Building upon these theoretical traditions of writers such as Marx and Gramsci, the author attempts to go beyond them, synthesising their basic ideas in a more powerful general scheme.
