A Ministry of Presence: Chaplaincy, Spiritual Care, and the Law, by Winnifred Fallers Sullivan

Most people in the United States today no longer live their lives under the guidance of local institutionalized religious leadership, such as rabbis, ministers, and priests; rather, liberals and conservatives alike have taken charge of their own religious or spiritual practices. This shift, along with other social and cultural changes, has opened up a perhaps surprising space for chaplains—spiritual professionals who usually work with the endorsement of a religious community but do that work away from its immediate hierarchy, ministering in a secular institution, such as a prison, the military, or an airport, to an ever-changing group of clients of widely varying faiths and beliefs.

In A Ministry of Presence, Winnifred Fallers Sullivan explores how chaplaincy works in the United States—and in particular how it sits uneasily at the intersection of law and religion, spiritual care, and government regulation. Responsible for ministering to the wandering souls of the globalized economy, the chaplain works with a clientele often unmarked by a specific religious identity, and does so on behalf of a secular institution, like a hospital. Sullivan's examination of the sometimes heroic but often deeply ambiguous work yields fascinating insights into contemporary spiritual life, the politics of religious freedom, and the never-ending negotiation of religion's place in American institutional life.

Review
"Thought-provoking. . . . Contemporary chaplaincy programs demonstrate that practices termed 'spiritual' are not unique to the political left or right, and chaplains from a wide variety of institutional backgrounds are grappling with how to provide this 'spiritual care.' A Ministry of Presence makes clear that this grappling has a particular history, and in so doing makes a valuable contribution to the study of American religion." (Michael Graziano Religion in American History)

"An important contribution to ongoing scholarly discussions in religious studies, American history, politics, and legal studies. . . . Sullivan has contributed much to our understanding of the many ways religion continues to influence ‘secular’ legal trajectories, and vice versa." (Religion Bulletin)

“A dazzling, meticulous study of the interdependence of law and religion. . . . This book is an analytical feat of rare and beautiful complexity. No other scholarship on the topic of chaplaincies explores their legal significance with the intensity or range that Sullivan’s ‘legal anthropology of religion’ exhibits.”
(Journal of the American Academy of Religion)

“[A] cogent, well-researched volume. . . . Recommended.”
(Choice)

“Excellent. . . . Highly recommended.”
(Catholic Library World)

“One of the most important voices in the contemporary study of law and religion, Sullivan shows how the chaplain has come to occupy a key role in the negotiation of law, politics, and religion in contemporary America.  With subtlety and erudition, Sullivan brings her reader to the illuminating realization that the chaplain is a figure that sits at the complicated confluence of church and state, an emblem not only of contemporary constitutionalism, but also of modern economic and political life in the United States.” (Benjamin L. Berger, Osgoode Hall Law School, York University)

“Fantastic and provocative. Sullivan takes readers into new territory where we can consider American religion and social life from a new angle. Her strong authorial voice keeps the many moving parts together and makes A Ministry of Presence a pleasure to read.” (Courtney Bender, Columbia University)

“In this elegantly written and closely argued work, Sullivan shows that chaplains of all faiths in prisons, hospitals, and the military today find themselves at the nexus of forces that aim to make them into ‘priests of the secular,’ whose role it is to insure spiritually healthy and well adjusted prisoners, patients, and soldiers—as spiritual well-being is determined by the state and circumscribed by the courts. A Ministry of Presence is essential for understanding what has become—and what is becoming—of ‘religion’ in the United States today.” (Robert Orsi, author of Between Heaven and Earth: The Religious Worlds People Make and the Scholars Who Study Them)

The New Established Church of American Unitarian Universalism
By Hugh Rock
The specialist focus indicated by the title of this book, which would have led me to pass it by but for a friend’s recommendation, belies the fact that it raises far-reaching questions about the future direction of Christianity; about the relation of religion, culture and government; and, most intriguingly, whether the distinction between ‘secular’ and ‘religious’ has any meaning.

Winnifred Sullivan focusses specifically on government sponsored pastors. In a rapid and discreet expansion these have achieved a “ubiquity, invisible and unquantifiable.” This wave of employment has been aided by the privatisation of government services. As an introductory example of the new comprehensive scope, Sullivan records an interview with the pastor to the game wardens of the state of Maine, whose service to individuals is simply to “be present”. Government paid pastors can be found now, not only in the traditional military environments, but in fire services, hospitals, airports, universities, legislatures and care services.

These pastors have a specific religious brief which enforces a distinctive professional identity that is in tension with with the sectarian divisions of Christianity. Any hint of denominational proselytization is forbidden. They are obliged to take a position, expounded, for instance, by the army service, that is essentially Universalist or Quaker: “each person has to find the truth for himself.” A tension arises from the fact that all pastors must be denominationally approved, but the government sets the curriculum for the Master of Divinity Degree and the Clinical Pastoral Education Certificate, which are essential to employment. The government is thus in charge of public theology.

This tension is epitomised by the eight hundred evangelical chaplains who sued the navy in the complaint that the navy’s theology discriminated against them.

The constitutionality of this sponsorship has been vigorously contested by the Freedom From Religion Foundation. But, crucially, the FFRF has lost the case. Government pastors are here to stay and set to proliferate. The Supreme Court decided that their sponsorship escapes constitutional prohibition because spirituality is not religious, (a distinction that sociology has found vacuous) and also that the government has a legitimate interest ensuring the availability of free choice of religion.

Sullivan, although never stating this explicitly, seems, from a conventional ecclesiastical perspective to take a regretful stance toward this Universalism. Religion is being “stripped to the basics”, “neutralized and naturalized”. Faith has become a universalising category, of “therapeutic religion”, a holy trinity of “mind body, and spirit”, “ambiguously secularist”, in which sin and salvation has given way to “self-realization” and Christian theology has given way to “the language of therapy. . .and behavioural psychology.”

It is, moreover, a politically inspired project. It is a “national project of interfaith equity and moral education”, “civil religion theology”, legally enforced secularization, in which orthodoxy has become undesirable. Chaplains have become “priest[s] of the secular”, support “rationalist epistemologies” and give blessing to the national endeavour.

But there is an alternative, more positive interpretation available. These chaplains are real priests. They are priests of the new religion, as Sullivan notes from other observers, in which pluralism is the new truth claim. This is the new religion in which “mid-century pluralist sensibility” has given way to an “emerging universality”. This erases any boundary between religious and secular. It is a religion that emerges naturally from the paradoxical fact that the prohibition of government promotion of religion, embedded the equality of all religions in the constitution. This is the Established Church of American Unitarian Universalism.

Sullivan’s work raises profound questions that sociology and theology have barely touched on. It is a magnificent sourcebook of developments from which to start such an investigation.

Louis Sullivan: His Life and Work, by Robert Twombly

Louis Sullivan believed that art should reveal the creative method of nature. The greatest artist was the poet, whose understanding of nature spurred social change.

This volume is both a tribute to Sullivan’s poetic genius and a catalogue of all his graphic work. The authors discuss the social implications of Sullivan’s theories of architecture, with visual proof of his vision in illustrations of his work on paper and in three dimensions. A translation of 'Etude sur l’inspiration,' Sullivan’s seminal and heretofore unpublished credo in verse, is further testimony to his vision. Included is an illustrated catalogue of all extant Sullivan drawings, some never before published. 428 illustrations

From Publishers Weekly
While Sullivan's skyscrapers proclaimed Chicago the biggest and best city, he saw himself as an architect of the people, interpreting the popular will in a distinctly American style. This pathbreaking biography reveals how original Sullivan was, how much his own man. It also probes the tragedy of an innovator who, famous by age 30, nevertheless died poor and neglected in a cheap Chicago hotel in 1924. Sullivan was a compulsively serious man with missionary zeal, an immaculately groomed recluse whose aristocratic demeanor was meant to compensate for his poor Irish roots. His ideas about organic architecture took full shape in the works of his pupil Frank Lloyd Wright. Twombly, who teaches at City University of New York, ponders whether Sullivan's decline was the fault of the Classical Revival, his break with his partner, refusal to compromise his artistic standards or his emerging homosexual proclivities. The answer seems to lie in a mixture of all these factors. Many photographs and drawings are interwoven with the text.

From Library Journal
Despite Louis Sullivan's deserved reputation as the dean of American architects, little of substance has been written on his life and works. Twombly corrects this oversight with a superb new biography covering Sullivan's childhood in Boston; his early associations with Frank Furness in Philadelphia; his move to Chicago, where, during his partnership with Dankmar Adler, many of his finest buildings were constructed; and the final years when fame and fortune deserted him. Using contemporary magazines and newspapers, surviving buildings, photographs and drawings of demolished structures, and nonarchitectural archival material, Twombly has done a remarkable job of bringing Sullivan's complex personality and artistic genius to life. Highly recommended for scholars and interested laypersons alike. H. Ward Jandl, National Park Svce., Washington, D.C.

The Challenger Launch Decision: Risky Technology, Culture, and Deviance at NASA, by Diane Vaughan

When the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded on January 28, 1986, millions of Americans became bound together in a single, historic moment. Many still vividly remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard about the tragedy. In The Challenger Launch Decision, Diane Vaughan recreates the steps leading up to that fateful decision, contradicting conventional interpretations to prove that what occurred at NASA was not skulduggery or misconduct but a disastrous mistake.

Journalists and investigators have historically cited production problems and managerial wrong-doing as the reasons behind the disaster. The Presidential Commission uncovered a flawed decision-making process at the space agency as well, citing a well-documented history of problems with the O-ring and a dramatic last-minute protest by engineers over the Solid Rocket Boosters as evidence of managerial neglect.

Why did NASA managers, who not only had all the information prior to the launch but also were warned against it, decide to proceed? In retelling how the decision unfolded through the eyes of the managers and the engineers, Vaughan uncovers an incremental descent into poor judgment, supported by a culture of high-risk technology. She reveals how and why NASA insiders, when repeatedly faced with evidence that something was wrong, normalized the deviance so that it became acceptable to them.

No safety rules were broken. No single individual was at fault. Instead, the cause of the disaster is a story not of evil but of the banality of organizational life. This powerful work explains why the Challenger tragedy must be reexamined and offers an unexpected warning about the hidden hazards of living in this technological age.

From Publishers Weekly
The loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986 is usually ascribed to NASA's decision to accept a safety risk to meet a launch schedule. Vaughan, a professor of sociology at Boston College, argues instead that the disaster's roots are to be found in the nature of institutional life. Organizations develop cultural beliefs that shape action and outcome, she notes. NASA's institutional history and group dynamics reflected a perception of competition for scarce resources, which fostered a structure that accepted risk-taking and corner-cutting as norms that shaped decision-making. Small, seemingly harmless modifications to technical and procedural standards collectively propelled the space agency toward disaster even though no specific rules were broken. While Vaughan's complex presentation will daunt general readers, her conclusion that the "normalization of deviance" builds error into all human systems is as compelling as it is pessimistic.

From Scientific American
Vaughan gives us a rare view into the working level realities of NASA. . . . the cumulative force of her argument and evidence is compelling.

From Booklist
Had Margaret Mead studied the NASAns instead of the Samoans, this anthropological story of the shuttle catastrophe might have resulted. We see the bureaucratic culture that shaped the behavior of the rocket scientists: they launched Challenger expecting some damage to the now infamous O-rings. How they reached that position of tempting fate infuses Vaughan's account. Making arguable constructions about the engineering mentality and group-think, Vaughan focuses on the fateful teleconference the night before the launch, in which executives of the rocket manufacturer first resisted then caved into NASA's pressure to launch. For exerting that pressure, the space agency's managers were pilloried, but personalizing the blame, Vaughan believes, ignores the acculturated rules they followed--which emanated from the political and funding compromises that created the shuttle design. Though Vaughan's scholastic diction acts as narrative speed bumps, her sociological interpretation helps explain the seemingly inexplicable. This complements the dramatic and popular orientation of No Downlink, by Claus Jensen . Gilbert Taylor

Reliability/Maintenance/Refinery Engineering Application
By Kenneth P. Bloch
I started reading this book to improve my Root Cause Failure Analysis skills after hearing that it covers, in fine detail, a failure that cost the lives of 7 astronauts and destroyed a multi-billion dollar asset. We are first presented with the popular media viewpoint that describes how performance-driven NASA administrators aggressively pursued production, political, and economic goals at the expense of personal safety. How a mechanical flaw formally designated as a potentially catastrophic anomaly by NASA and Thiokol engineers became a normal flight risk on the basis of previous good launches. How a last minute plea from subject matter experts to halt the countdown on an uncommonly cold day in January 1986 was ignored by engineering managers on the decision chain so the launch schedule would not be compromised.
I remember an early feeling of relief in knowing that while similar performance, production, and scheduling pressures exist in my career, the attitudes that were mostly at fault for the Challenger incident are absent from my refinery and violate all 10 of my parent company's business principles starting with #1 (conduct all business lawfully and with integrity).
The author then proceeds to shatter every element of this popular emotional impression by presenting a credible account of the failure based on public record. This is an important point because unlike with Enron's collapse, there is no shredding of pertinent documents behind the Challenger incident. And it is this matter of public record that can benefit anyone having reliability or production engineering responsibilities within a refinery. Here we find evidence that NASA's best friend - a reliable system built to assure the utmost safety in engineering - was to blame for the tragedy. A system that encourages the challenging of engineering data to validate its meaning. A system that prioritizes safety above any other initiative. A system that requires operation within specified safety limits in order to function. A system that requires vendor/customer interaction. A system with multiple departments, requiring effective communication between each.
I soon realized that the book that I was reading was not a book about a tragic point in American history, but a book about managing risks we routinely encounter in a refinery, using the Challenger incident as the case history to relate them to. Like so many case histories in industry, we benefit by understanding what went wrong and taking proactive measures to prevent against it from happening again.
If I owned this refinery and someone came to me saying, "Hey, I'd really like to work here" I would send him or her off with a copy of this book. If that person returned still interested, chances are he or she would get the job.

A Hard Read - Worth theEffort
By Dr. David Arelette
A great book - many lessons for business in making decisions based on what you want to see and not what is really in front of you.
The actual cause of the disaster is clear in the first 20 of 500 pages - the booster O ring was safe at perhaps 60F while the booster had been only 8F some two hours before the launch, the ambient temperature was less important as the booster that failed was not in the direct sunlight.
The other 480 pages try to explain why rational people relied on "gut feel" when any non engineer could see that all the available evidence was that the seal would fail - this time or next time but eventually - and sooner rather than later.
Well researched and well converted into low level technical language for non engineers.
Worth reading when you want to be reassured that standing up for what you believe is right in large organisations is a worthy cause.
The only question not asked - would those who made the launch decision traded places with the crew.

Normalization Of Deviance
By Robert I. Hedges
As a sociological explanation of disastrous decision making in high risk applications, this book is without peer, exceeding even Charles Perrow's work by a fair measure. Vaughan, a sociologist, obviously worked very hard at understanding the field joint technology that caused the "Challenger" accident, and even harder at understanding the extremely complex management and decision making processes at NASA and Morton Thiokol.

The book ultimately discards the "amoral calculation" school of thought (which she was preconditioned to believe at the outset of her research by media coverage of the event) and explains how an ever expanding definition of acceptable performance (despite prior joint issues) led to the "normalization of deviance" which allowed the faulty decision to launch to be made. The sociological and cultural analyses are especially enlightening and far surpass the technical material about the actual physical cause of the accident presented.

This is a masterful book, and is impeccably documented. The reference portion of the book in the back is especially useful, in that she reproduces several key original documents pertinent to the investigation which are difficult to obtain elsewhere. My only objection to the book is the extreme use of repetition, which I think needlessly lengthened the book in several areas, and obfuscating sociological terminology like "paradigm obduracy" which not only fails to illuminate the non-sociologists among us, but makes for somewhat tortured prose.

In praise of the book, however, it is a brilliant analysis of how decisions are made in safety-critical programs in large institutions. Chapter ten, "Lessons Learned," is particularly noteworthy in its analysis and recommendations. It's a shame that managerial turnover has ensured that few of the "Challenger" era managers were still at the agency during the "Columbia" accident era. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

This book makes for very weighty and difficult reading. Having said that, I highly recommend it to technical professionals, particularly engineers and managers involved with high-risk technologies. Likewise, it is absolutely imperative reading for safety professionals, consultants, and analysts.

You Were Never in Chicago (Chicago Visions and Revisions), by Neil Steinberg

In 1952 the New Yorker published a three-part essay by A. J. Liebling in which he dubbed Chicago the "Second City." From garbage collection to the skyline, nothing escaped Liebling's withering gaze. Among the outraged responses from Chicago residents was one that Liebling described as the apotheosis of such criticism: a postcard that read, simply, "You were never in Chicago."

Neil Steinberg has lived in and around Chicago for more than three decades—ever since he left his hometown of Berea, Ohio, to attend Northwestern—yet he remains fascinated by the dynamics captured in Liebling's anecdote. In You Were Never in Chicago Steinberg weaves the story of his own coming-of-age as a young outsider who made his way into the inner circles and upper levels of Chicago journalism with a nuanced portrait of the city that would surprise even lifelong residents.

Steinberg takes readers through Chicago's vanishing industrial past and explores the city from the quaint skybridge between the towers of the Wrigley Building, to the depths of the vast Deep Tunnel system below the streets. He deftly explains the city's complex web of political favoritism and carefully profiles the characters he meets along the way, from greats of jazz and journalism to small-business owners just getting by. Throughout, Steinberg never loses the curiosity and close observation of an outsider, while thoughtfully considering how this perspective has shaped the city, and what it really means to belong. Intimate and layered, You Were Never in Chicago will be a welcome addition to the bookshelves of all Chicagoans, be they born in the city or forever transplanted.

From Booklist
Steinberg is a columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times. Born in Ohio, he has spent more than 30 years living in and around Chicago. He has written a rambling, deeply felt tribute to his adopted city. His narrative, if it can be called that, lacks structure, which can be both disconcerting and entertaining. He makes rapid shifts in space, time, and topic. He moves, for example, from discussing contemporary politics to the founding of the city and from the architectural majesty of the skyline to the culinary delights of local restaurants. Despite his long residence in the city and its suburbs, Steinberg feels and writes as an outsider, which allows him to see and describe aspects of Chicago from a fresh and enthusiastic perspective. At times, his breezy, breathless tone suggests an enthralled tourist. This is a well-done paean to a diverse, vibrant metropolis. --Jay Freeman

Review
"[A] rollicking newspaperman's memoir . . . and a strong case for Second City exceptionalism." (New York Times)

"A triumph." (Patrick Ryan Toronto Star)

“In this wonderful book, Steinberg weaves a poetic mosaic of his life and the life of Chicago—past, present, real, imagined. Like many of its citizens, he came here from elsewhere, drawn by its brawny allure. He lives in Chicago and Chicago lives in him.”—Roger Ebert (Roger Ebert)

“I grew up in Chicago. And reading You Were Never in Chicago reminds me why I still think of Chicago as home even though I haven’t lived in the city for more than twenty years. Steinberg brilliantly explores the historical and contemporary city and how each of us makes (or loses) our way in it. Whether you're a native or you just arrived at O'Hare, read this book: it will make you feel at home in Chicago. Even better, it will you make Chicago yours.” (Dan Savage)

“A lot of people have tried to take the measure of Chicago, capture it between the covers of a book. Many more have failed than have been successful, and that’s easy to understand. Chicago is ever elusive. But this writer and this book get it. If you know Neil Steinberg from his Sun-Times column, and God love you for still reading a newspaper, you will not be unfamiliar with the high quality and distinctive style of his writing. But here you will also find people and places and sentiments that will surprise, enlighten, and entertain you. It is, of course, his own take on the city. And it’s a keeper.” (Rick Kogan)

"Despite his long residence in the city and its suburbs, Steinberg feels and writes as an outsider, which allows him to see and describe aspects of Chicago from a fresh and enthusiastic perspective....This is a well-done paean to a diverse, vibrant metropolis."

(Booklist)

"Like Studs Terkel before him, Steinberg mixes memoir, history, and travelogue in You Were Never in Chicago as he takes readers along on an engaging tour of the characters—and character—of his adopted city, past and present." (Kristin Baird Rattini American Way Magazine)

"If you love Chicago, you’ve got to read Neil Steinberg’s new book You Were Never In Chicago. It’s not a guide book. You won’t find a listing of restaurants. It’s not the history of our great city. It’s one man’s perception of this complex, compelling and confounding community we call sweet home Chicago. . . . He has the skill and curiosity of a great writer." (Terri Hemmert XRT)

"[O]n display in You Were Never in Chicago, a memoir interwoven with local history just published by the University of Chicago Press . . . is [Neil's] curiosity, insight, amusing self-awareness and enormous talent." (Eric Zorn Chicago Tribune)

"Steinberg’s greatest gift is his ability to build Chicago in our imaginations as a city that has grown from the efforts of people willing to make it their home, sometimes against unbelievable odds. He weaves wonderful stories of people we now take for granted – Upton Sinclair, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Carl Sandburg, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, Theodore Dreiser, Jelly Roll Morton – all who were not born in Chicago, but for whom Chicago became the backdrop onto which they achieved greatness."

(Shyam K. Sriram PopMatters)

"You Were Never In Chicago by Chicago Sun-Times journalist and author, Neil Steinberg is the directional refrain that echoes throughout this very readable poetic memoir, historic excavation and contemporary exploration; Steinberg portrays a vastly nuanced city, breathtaking in its myriad facets like a rare diamond, painstakingly, slowly cut and lovingly polished." (Chicago Life)

"Steinberg’s new book is a pleasing blend of what makes him and his city distinctive. You Were Never in Chicago is a sort-of memoir of his professional life, a kind-of love letter to the city—a scrapbook, as it were, of Chicago eccentricities. Unlike most columnists who get called 'humorists,' Neil Steinberg is a funny writer."  (Andrew Ferguson The Weekly Standard)

"Steinberg . . . takes the reader on a rollicking tour of Chicago history, writing with engaging fascination about the famous characters who've made the city home—from jazz great Louis Armstrong to mobster Al Capone to celebrity columnist and talk-show host Irv Kupcinet—as well as those on the margins that play just as much of a role in the reality of Chicago, such as prostitutes, crack babies, and owners of failing businesses. He has an eye for the tiny details, the quirks that turn a regular Joe into someone to remember and bring celebrities down to a human level." (Mary Mann Bookslut)

"Steinberg revels in the unusual, the underground, the unique, sharing stories about a Chicago that most readers—even many locals—would usually overlook." (Chicago Book Review)

Made Me Wish I Was Still in Chicago
By Didier
Knowing how good a writer Steinberg is, I couldn't wait to read this book. I was not disappointed. "You Were Never in Chicago" is his best book to date. The author weaves his personal history with the story of Chicago and we get to discover people, places and events that form its marrow. This is not a book for tourists or about tourists. It is a book for people who love the city or have flirted with it and wish to get to know it more intimately. It is also the story (and stories) of a great journalist in the classic sense. One who loves to explore the nooks and cranies as well as the large public spaces of Chicago and the people who give them life and who is able to write about those experiences in an eloquent and accessible manner.

I may need to buy extra copies....
By M. Carroll
Halfway through reading the free e-book from the Chicago University Press, I bought the hard cover version so I could hold it in my hand, enjoy the cover, gaze at it on my coffee table, and hand it to family and friends to read, so I could have someone to talk to about this book and this city. I found the historical portrait of Chicago to be very well written and informative, and a great complement to my previous reads, Devil in the White City, Loving Frank, Lost Chicago and Sin in the Second City.

Neil Steinberg's book is a revelation, filled with bittersweet memoir of a city that never stops changing and growing, and is in a sense, unknowable, even to those who have lived here all their lives. As an east-coast transplant to the Chicago suburbs, the city has always fascinated me, from the visually stunning architecture and museums, to the public spaces and art, the lakefront, the people, the politics, the weather - and after decades of exploring I feel I will never know more that a hint of Chicago, a city in constant flux. Thankfully, this book captures a glimpse of what was, and what lies ahead.

Shifting seamlessly from personal memoir to historical and political context to homage to long gone businesses and institutions, You Were Never In Chicago captivated me as I rushed through my first reading, but I plan to revisit many chapters when my hard copy arrives. I have added many destinations to my must-see in the city list, and can't wait to find the next fascinating destination, person or experience in Chicago. This book gets my highest recommendation.

I cannot say enough great things about this book. Neil is great writer who not only has his finger on the pulse of Chicago, but also on it's heart and soul. I will be giving this away as a gift for the holidays.

The Pontecorvo Affair: A Cold War Defection and Nuclear Physics, by Simone Turchetti

In the fall of 1950, newspapers around the world reported that the Italian-born nuclear physicist Bruno Pontecorvo and his family had mysteriously disappeared while returning to Britain from a holiday trip. Because Pontecorvo was known to be an expert working for the UK Atomic Energy Research Establishment, this raised immediate concern for the safety of atomic secrets, especially when it became known in the following months that he had defected to the Soviet Union. Was Pontecorvo a spy? Did he know and pass sensitive information about the bomb to Soviet experts? At the time, nuclear scientists, security personnel, Western government officials, and journalists assessed the case, but their efforts were inconclusive and speculations quickly turned to silence. In the years since, some have downplayed Pontecorvo’s knowledge of atomic weaponry, while others have claimed him as part of a spy ring that infiltrated the Manhattan Project.           The Pontecorvo Affair draws from newly disclosed sources to challenge previous attempts to solve the case, offering a balanced and well-documented account of Pontecorvo, his activities, and his possible motivations for defecting. Along the way, Simone Turchetti reconsiders the place of nuclear physics and nuclear physicists in the twentieth century and reveals that as the discipline’s promise of military and industrial uses came to the fore, so did the enforcement of new secrecy provisions on the few experts in the world specializing in its application.

Review
“[Turchetti] upends the notion that Pontecorvo’s limited access to atomic ‘secrets’ made his defection a minor footnote to cold-war history. He argues compellingly that it was Pontecorvo’s expertise in key areas of nuclear physics, rather than access to secret work, that made his defection significant.” (Sharon Weinberger Nature)

“The book is dense in details about secrecy, FBI investigations, Cold War politics, patents, spying, and personal intrigues. . . . This book will be useful to those seriously interested in the history of physics. Recommended.” (A. M. Strauss, Vanderbilt University Choice)

“The specter of atomic espionage, a sudden defection to the Soviet Union: for more than half a century, the strange case of Bruno Pontecorvo has captivated policymakers, journalists, and scholars. Throw in some contested patents, millions of dollars at stake, and fast-changing developments in international relations and intellectual-property rights in the atomic age, and the case becomes even more fascinating. Most revealing of all in Simone Turchetti’s clear and sober analysis are the political calculations behind the selective collection and targeted release of sensitive information, all in the name of nuclear security. A must-read for anyone interested in nuclear physics, the Cold War, and their legacies today.” (David Kaiser, Massachusetts Institute of Technology)

“Western readers know Bruno Pontecorvo as a nuclear expert who defected to Russia in 1950. This book opens up a rich story behind the episode—of an Italian physicist with a Jewish background and communist sympathies who lived through very insecure times and worked as a scientist in Fascist Italy, socialist Paris, and oil-rich America, on classified nuclear projects in Canada and Britain, and in the Stalinist USSR. Turchetti’s tongue-in-cheek analysis of the work of security services is a revelation for all who are keenly interested in spies and conspiracy theories.” (Alexei Kojevnikov, University of British Columbia)

“This book makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of Bruno Pontecorvo’s work as a physicist, of his political activities, and of the circumstances surrounding his defection to the Soviet Union in 1950.” (John Krige, Georgia Institute of Technology)

“Was Bruno Pontecorvo a dangerous spy, as the media argued, or harmless, as the UK government claimed when he defected to the Soviet Union in 1950? Simone Turchetti digs deeper into this affair than anyone before and shows that there were many agendas at work. While the truth may never be known, Turchetti’s thesis is compelling and assiduously researched. This adds invaluable insights to the politics and history of the Cold War.” (Frank Close, University of Oxford)

Simone Turchetti is an independent research fellow at the Centre for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine at the University of Manchester.

Review
"[A] fascinating study.... on how and why ideas about primate society have changed. The volume consists of dialogues among scientists from different disciplines, national traditions, scientific cultures, generations, standpoints, and genders.... A wonderful reflection on the discipline of primatology and on science in general." - Science Books and Films; "Sparkling with ideas, bristling with controversy, this volume offers new understandings of what science is, how it is made, and the special position of primate studies in society. Innovative and authoritative.... The result is truly wonderful." - Londa Schiebinger, Pennsylvania State University

Sex and the Gender Revolution, Volume 1: Heterosexuality and the Third Gender in Enlightenment London (The Chicago Series on Sexuality, His

A revolution in gender relations occurred in London around 1700, resulting in a sexual system that endured in many aspects until the sexual revolution of the 1960s. For the first time in European history, there emerged three genders: men, women, and a third gender of adult effeminate sodomites, or homosexuals. This third gender had radical consequences for the sexual lives of most men and women since it promoted an opposing ideal of exclusive heterosexuality.

In Sex and the Gender Revolution, Randolph Trumbach reconstructs the worlds of eighteenth-century prostitution, illegitimacy, sexual violence, and adultery. In those worlds the majority of men became heterosexuals by avoiding sodomy and sodomite behavior.

As men defined themselves more and more as heterosexuals, women generally experienced the new male heterosexuality as its victims. But women--as prostitutes, seduced servants, remarrying widows, and adulterous wives-- also pursued passion. The seamy sexual underworld of extramarital behavior was central not only to the sexual lives of men and women, but to the very existence of marriage, the family, domesticity, and romantic love. London emerges as not only a geographical site but as an actor in its own right, mapping out domains where patriarchy, heterosexuality, domesticity, and female resistance take vivid form in our imaginations and senses.

As comprehensive and authoritative as it is eloquent and provocative, this book will become an indispensable study for social and cultural historians and delightful reading for anyone interested in taking a close look at sex and gender in eighteenth-century London.

From Publishers Weekly
Attempting to explain the formation of modern sexual identities, Trumbach (The Rise of the Egalitarian Family) offers a theory of how "heterosexual identity" was produced in the 18th century. He attributes it to the rise of the "Molly," a man exclusively interested in sex with other men, who first emerged in 18th-century London. Previously, he argues, it was normal and acceptable for London men to have sexual relations with both boys and women. After the Molly, Trumbach contends, most men (but not women) reorganized their sexual behavior to demonstrate their heterosexuality. Unfortunately, Trumbach never quite makes the abundance of evidence he marshals speak for this theory. Despite a too-brief section on accusations of sodomy, he never links his many long case studies (based on legal records) of the sexual histories of prostitutes, adulteresses and abandoned wives to his theorized changes in male sexual behavior. And while he insists that the "new heterosexuality" was a primary cause of prostitution, he never establishes that prostitution was any less widespread in earlier periods. Trumbach's book will be useful as a source of empirical information for scholars, but it fails to synthesize the material well enough to appeal to a broader audience, or to become a definitive study.

Superb synthesis of richly culled evidence
By Cleis Abeni
"Sex and the Gender Revolution" is superb on in its well-argued synthesis of voluminous archival sources.
The posted review from "Booklist" ***mistakenly*** assumes that Professor Trumbach fails to perform a synthesis of the evidence in this dazzlingly authoritative book.
I don't know how anyone in their right mind could come to such a conclusion after seriously and carefully reading this book. (The word "careful" will come up again in my review as I believe this is what is lacking in many people's examination of deep scholarship such as this book.)

The "Booklist" reviewer also makes a curious claim about empiricism. Ha! In an age where newer modes of scholarship about gender and sexuality often retreats into theoretical claims without firsthand evidence and primary sources; in an age of where these newer modes are often more about polemics than syntheses of specific evidence, we surely need Professor Trumbach's (I do not know him) far-reaching arguments *about* his evidence.
This book is the first in a series that treats the same topic: that is, the furious cross-institutional resistance to rising compulsory heterosexuality in 18th century (etc.) London--a resistance informed by previous bouts of sexual diversity among men, women, young boys, and so forth; a resistance contested by even more rising male dominance and violence towards women.
May I suggest that the definitive review of this book is Deborah Valenze's careful discussion in the Winter 2000 edition of the Journal of Social History.
A careful and generous reader will realize right away the extreme value of Professor Trumbach's excavation for generations to come.
