The Mourner's Song: War and Remembrance from the Iliad to Vietnam, by James Tatum

No matter when or where they are fought, all wars have one thing in common: a relentless progression to monuments and memorials for the dead. Likewise all art made from war begins and ends in mourning and remembrance. In The Mourner's Song, James Tatum offers incisive discussions of physical and literary memorials constructed in the wake of war, from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to the writings of Stephen Crane, Edmund Wilson, Tim O'Brien, and Robert Lowell.

Tatum's touchstone throughout is the Iliad, not just one of the earliest war poems, but also one of the most powerful examples of the way poetry can be a tribute to and consolation for what is lost in war. Reading the Iliad alongside later works inspired by war, Tatum reveals how the forms and processes of art convert mourning to memorial. He examines the role of remembrance and the distance from war it requires; the significance of landscape in memorialization; the artifacts of war that fire the imagination; the intimate relationship between war and love and its effects on the ferocity with which soldiers wage battle; and finally, the idea of memorialization itself. Because all survivors suffer the losses of war, Tatum's is a story of both victims and victors, commanders and soldiers, women and men. Photographs of war memorials in Vietnam, France, and the United States beautifully augment his testimonials.

Eloquent and deeply moving, The Mourner's Song will speak to anyone interested in the literature of war and the relevance of the classics to our most pressing contemporary needs.

Uneven look, for literature students, at "war and remembrance"
By moose/squirrel
Tatum is a classicist by profession, and the best parts of this book are his reflections on the Iliad, reflections inspired by remembrance of a childhood friend who was killed in Vietnam.

Unfortunately, while Tatum knows a great deal about the Iliad, he knows and (it seems to me) accurately intuits much less about war and the ordinary soldier's experience of it. Besides Homer, his knowledge of these subjects appears to come primarily from recent literature and literary criticism. Surely it isn't true that the Iliad "says everything there is to say about war."

Tatum understands that war is a terrible business. Unfortunately, that elementary awareness leads him to observations like, "Good killing, like good sex, is much enhanced by eye contact" - as if the average soldier is a serial killer at heart. (Tatum was led to this conclusion partly by a scene in "Saving Private Ryan.") He also believes that "the feminist imagination has made short work of" battlefield heroism, assuring us that "A hero ain't nothin' but a sandwich." He wonders if some people have gone to war to see whether death in combat is ever "as funny" as some of the deaths described by Homer. I guess I don't quite share Tatum's sensibility.

Very good on the Iliad (and on Robert Lowell's poem, "For the Union Dead").

Echolocation in Bats and DolphinsFrom University Of Chicago Press

Although bats and dolphins live in very different environments, are vastly different in size, and hunt different kinds of prey, both groups have evolved similar sonar systems, known as echolocation, to locate food and navigate the skies and seas. While much research has been conducted over the past thirty years on echolocation in bats and dolphins, this volume is the first to compare what is known about echolocation in each group, to point out what information is missing, and to identify future areas of research.

Echolocation in Bats and Dolphins consists of six sections: mechanisms of echolocation signal production; the anatomy and physiology of signal reception and interpretation; performance and cognition; ecological and evolutionary aspects of echolocation mammals; theoretical and methodological topics; and possible echolocation capabilities in other mammals, including shrews, seals, and baleen whales. Animal behaviorists, ecologists, physiologists, and both scientists and engineers who work in the field of bioacoustics will benefit from this book.

Review
“An extremely useful and timely work. Echolocation in Bats and Dolphins is a thorough volume that will make a significant contribution to both bat and dolphin research. Historically, the two fields of research have followed different paths and development, and this volume highlights those differences, which will no doubt benefit researchers in both fields. In addition, it is a wonderful forum for updating scientists in both fields as to the state of the art in the other. The editors are to be commended for their thorough and logical treatment of the deceptively broad topic of echolocation in these two diverse taxa.”

(Dr. Douglas Nowacek Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)

“The book's enormous scope covers how noises are made and analysed, how young animals learn to process such information and much more. Its style is technical but there is enough introductory material to bring you up to speed on biophysics. Those already familiar with either dolphins or bats will find this book provides both a fine update on recent research and a fabulous peek into a parallel world. For the more general biologist it provides fascinating insights into the similarities and divergences in the evolution of these mammalian masters of air and sea.”

(Rebecca Shapley New Scientist)

“The list of authors contains many of the leading researchers, as well as young scientists who will be the leading researchers of tomorrow. This volume would serve as a good introduction to current research on biological sonar for nonspecialists or students, as well as a “must have” collection of papers for biological sonar researchers.”

(Mark W. Sprague Quarterly Review of Biology)

“The book provides both a thorough scientific assessment of echolocation and an entrancing introduction to a developing fascinating field of research. Animal behaviorists, ecologists, physiologists, and both scientists and engineers who work in the field of bioacoustics will obviously greatly benefit from this book, but it should also be recommended to all researchers in natural sciences and especially oceanology who have an open interest in all the aspects of their interdisciplinary field of research. The book should definitely find its place on the shelves of the best documented libraries.” (Journal of Marine Systems)

“The volume as a whole would be essential reading for any active researcher in echolocation.” (Andrea M. Simmons Ethology)

“The book serves as a valuable volume for the bioacoustic scientists in the early 21st century. It contains many papers which have already made an important impact by inspiring future studies of bioacoustics. It is nice to see all these interesting pieces of new work in a single book, together with a good share of high-quality reviews.” (Magnus Wahlberg Aquatic Mammals)

The Real Real Thing: The Model in the Mirror of Art, by Wendy Steiner

Our era is defined by the model. From Victoria’s Secret and America’s Next Top Model to the snapshots we post on Facebook and Twitter, our culture is fixated on the pose, the state of existing simultaneously as artifice and the real thing.

In this bold view of contemporary culture, Wendy Steiner shows us the very meaning of the arts in the process of transformation. Her story begins at the turn of the last century, as the arts abandoned the representation of the world for a heady embrace of the abstract, the surreal, and the self-referential. Today though, this “separate sphere of the aesthetic” is indistinguishable from normal life. Media and images overwhelm us: we gingerly negotiate a real-virtual divide that we suspect no longer exists, craving contact with what J. M. Coetzee has called “the real real thing.” As the World Wide Web renders the lower-case world in ever-higher definition, the reality-based genres of memoir and documentary are displacing fiction, and novels and films are depicting the contemporary condition through model-protagonists who are half-human, half-image. Steiner shows the arts searching out a new ethical potential through this figure: by stressing the independent existence of the model, they welcome in the audience in all its unpredictability, redefining aesthetic experience as a real-world interaction with the promise of empathy, reciprocity, and egalitarian connection.

A masterly performance by a penetrating, inquisitive mind, The Real Real Thing is that rarest of books, one whose provocations and inspirations will inspire readers to take a new—and nuanced—look at the world around them.

Review
“Wendy Steiner is an original thinker, and I always look forward to her next book with pleasure, and with the anticipation that my education will be enhanced. In this study, she explores the apparent distance between artist and model as a space of the most profound and ramifying intimacy. In lucid prose she explores psychological, philosophical, political, and aesthetic relations at play in modeling. She draws on a wide range of thinkers from Kant to Judith Butler; writers, such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, and a particularly rich reading of J. M. Coetzee; and artists, such as Bob Dylan and the architect Peter Eisenman. Against this broad background, Steiner—who once herself modeled for a New York Times piece on stylish women academics—writes with eloquence and precision about the unexpectedly rich body of questions raised by the act of modeling.”

(Michael Holquist, Columbia University)

“Surveying the field of contemporary culture with grace and wit, Wendy Steiner comes to the surprising conclusion that ‘a revolution is underway in the general understanding of beauty.’ The Perfected Form of the engineered celebrity and supermodel—and such things as Platonic architecture and sculpture—is giving way to a more interactive beauty. The real real engages the audience in vital interaction—does not petrify as a Medusa head—a Reality squared”

(Charles Jencks, author of Critical Modernism)

Anahulu: The Anthropology of History in the Kingdom of Hawaii, Volume 1: Historical Ethnography, by Marshall Sahlins, Patrick Vinton Kirch

From the late 1700s, Hawaiian society began to change rapidly as it responded to the growing world system of capital whose trade routes and markets crisscrossed the islands. Reflecting many years of collaboration between Marshall Sahlins, a prominent social anthropologist, and Patrick V. Kirch, a leading archaeologist of Oceania, Anahulu seeks out the traces of this transformation in a typical local center of the kingdom founded by Kamehameha: the Anahulu river valley of northwestern Oahu.

Volume I shows the surprising effects of the encounter with the imperial forces of commerce and Christianity—the distinctive ways the Hawaiian people culturally organized the experience, from the structure of the kingdom to the daily life of ordinary people. Volume II examines the material record of changes in local social organization, economy and production, population, and domestic settlement arrangements.

From Library Journal
Presented here are the long-awaited results of a collaboration between two of the most accomplished scholars--one an ethnologist, the other an archaeologist--specializing in Pacific cultural history. Using the valley of the Anahulu River on Oahu's northwest coast as a case study, they chronicle the changes that swept through 19th-century Hawaii. The authors trace "an historic course set by a determinate cultural scheme," attempting to show how "capitalism realized itself through the mediation of a set of Hawaiian structures." In doing so, they have charted the intersection of world history and the specifics of Hawaiian life. This bold undertaking, requiring massive amounts of research, has been carried off with enormous success.

From the Back Cover
From the late 1700s, Hawaiian society began to change rapidly to the impinging world system of capital whose trade routes and markets crisscrossed the Pacific Ocean. Yet the transformation was far from one-sided, and indigenous Hawaiian cultural structure proved as critical to the emerging interaction as those of the European and American newcomers.

Masterful historical anthropology that brings detail and life to Hawaiian society from the late conquest period through the Mahele and into the late 19th century with a focus on the relationship between the conquering ali'i and maka'ainana and how that relationship effected the control of land, water and wealth (waiwai).

Great book, got here on time in good condition. Very satisfied, though it'd be pretty bad ass if a drone had come to deliver it.

Imagining Religion: From Babylon to Jonestown (Chicago Studies in the History of Judaism), by Jonathan Z. Smith

With this influential book of essays, Jonathan Z. Smith has pointed the academic study of religion in a new theoretical direction, one neither theological nor willfully ideological.

Making use of examples as apparently diverse and exotic as the Maori cults in nineteenth-century New Zealand and the events of Jonestown, Smith shows that religion must be construed as conventional, anthropological, historical, and as an exercise of imagination. In his analyses, religion emerges as the product of historically and geographically situated human ingenuity, cognition, and curiosity—simply put, as the result of human labor, one of the decisive but wholly ordinary ways human beings create the worlds in which they live and make sense of them.

"These seven essays . . . display the critical intelligence, creativity, and sheer common sense that make Smith one of the most methodologically sophisticated and suggestive historians of religion writing today. . . . Smith scrutinizes the fundamental problems of taxonomy and comparison in religious studies, suggestively redescribes such basic categories as canon and ritual, and shows how frequently studied myths may more likely reflect situational incongruities than vaunted mimetic congruities. His final essay, on Jonestown, demonstrates the interpretive power of the historian of religion to render intelligible that in our own day which seems most bizarre."—Richard S. Sarason, Religious Studies Review

Analytical genius
By Christopher I. Lehrich
Jonathan Z. Smith is the enfant terrible of the History of Religions discipline, although he's no longer young. From his first essays (collected in Map Is Not Territory) to his more recent musings in To Take Place and Drudgery Divine, he has outraged, stimulated, challenged, and restructured the study of religion in the modern academy.
Each essay here is a little gem, and should be read and savored by any serious student.
Right at the start, in "Fences and Neighbors", Smith shows his true colors: he talks about the taxonomy of walnuts, and uses this as a startlingly perfect demonstration of the strengths and weaknesses of various ways of defining and categorizing religion, religions, and religious groups. "In Comparison a Magic Dwells" points out that most comparison falls into Frazer's homeopathic/contagious magic division, and demonstrates the various pitfalls of the comparative endeavor. I could go on, right through the devastating and terrifying analysis of the Jonestown White Nights mass suicide, in which Smith argues that to study religion seriously, we have a duty to recognize that it is not always "nice," not always about love and peace, and that sometimes awful things are done because of religious feeling, but that nevertheless we are required to try to make sense of it -- a lesson that has renewed force in the wake of 9/11.

Smith does have one real flaw, though, which is that he assumes that everyone is as intelligent and careful as he is. He thinks that every reader will read all the endnotes, for example, and think about their implications for his arguments. And he assumes that every reader will hang onto a certain common-sense perspective on human nature, and interpret his arguments in that light.

Unfortunately, this isn't always the case. "In Comparison a Magic Dwells," for example, argues the need for a radical rethinking of how comparison should be done; many readers, however, think that he is anti-comparison in general. "The Bare Facts of Ritual," which tries to uproot an old sympathetic-magic reading of certain kinds of hunting rituals, and by implication a broader range of apparently intrumental rituals, has been interpreted as a failed attempt at a complete theory of ritual.

In short, this whole book needs to be read again and again, notes and all, with extraordinary care. If you're not willing to put in a great deal of effort, just don't bother--you're going to come out thinking that Smith has nothing constructive to say.

In _Imagining Religion_, Smith is by turns devastating and hilarious, and always brilliant. Not all of it can withstand every possible criticism, but what can? A seminal work, _Imagining Religion_ marks a place at which the History of Religions must either turn or turn back; the very possibility of the study of religion depends upon our turning.

Scholarship Rules
By Jon Murray
Simply an outstanding collectipn of essays. I knew nothing about the field, and am not an academic and read this by chance. In a sense the joy of this book is not neccessarily due to the subject matter but the opportunity to observe a rigorous and intelligent scholar at work.

By Finn Kveldulfr
Smith is a pompous ass who has nothing productive to say. I have noticed other reviewers bowing down to worship at the imagined altar of his brilliance, but I think they have engaged in quite a bit of imagination to try and find something worthwhile in Smith's words. His attempt to define classification systems falls flat from the outset-- he barely acknowledges (and then quickly dismisses as meaningless) that the real purpose of library and dictionary systems (which is in fact extremely useful and their only raison d'etre) is to make it easy to look up and find information, NOT to define categories so that they may be compared. Similarly, his denigration of forms of writing and comparison that he doesn't agree with does not reveal anything useful, either. And this book slides down from there.

About all I got from this crappy little book is several hours of utterly wasted time. I cannot believe that so many fools seek to follow this man's teachings, or that a major university thinks it raises their credibility to have him as a professor.

Time, Creation and the Continuum: Theories in Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, by Richard Sorabji

Richard Sorabji here takes time as his central theme, exploring fundamental questions about its nature: Is it real or an aspect of consciousness? Did it begin along with the universe? Can anything escape from it? Does it come in atomic chunks? In addressing these and myriad other issues, Sorabji engages in an illuminating discussion of early thought about time, ranging from Plato and Aristotle to Islamic, Christian, and Jewish medieval thinkers. Sorabji argues that the thought of these often negelected philosophers about the subject is, in many cases, more complete than that of their more recent counterparts.

“Splendid. . . . The canvas is vast, the picture animated, the painter nonpareil. . . . Sorabji’s work will encourage more adventurers to follow him to this fascinating new-found land.”—Jonathan Barnes, Times Literary Supplement

“One of the most important works in the history of metaphysics to appear in English for a considerable time. No one concerned with the problems with which it deals either as a historian of ideas or as a philosopher can afford to neglect it.”—Donald MacKinnon, Scottish Journal of Theology

“Unusually readable for such scholarly content, the book provides in rich and cogent terms a lively and well-balanced discussion of matters of concern to a wide academic audience.”—Choice

Gods and Vampires: Return to Chipaya, by Nathan Wachtel

When Nathan Wachtel, the distinguished historical anthropologist, returned to the village of Chipaya, the site of his extensive fieldwork in the Bolivian Andes, he learned a group of Uru Indians was being incarcerated and tortured for no apparent reason. Even more strangely, no one—not even his closest informant and friend—would speak about it.

Wachtel discovered that a series of recent deaths and misfortunes in Chipaya had been attributed to the evil powers of the Urus, a group usually regarded with suspicion by the other ethnic groups. Those incarcerated were believed to be the chief sorcerers and vampires whose paganistic practices had brought death to Chipaya by upsetting the social order. Wachtel's investigation, told in Gods and Vampires: Back to Chipaya, reveals much about relations between the Urus and the region's dominant ethnic groups and confronts some of the most trenchant issues in contemporary anthropology. His analysis shows that the Urus had become victims of the same set of ideals the Spanish had used, centuries before, to establish their hegemony in the region.

Presented as a personal detective story, Gods and Vampires is Wachtel's latest work in a series studying the ongoing impact of the Spanish conquest on the Andean consciousness and social system. Its insight into Bolivian society and the legacy of hegemony confronts some of the most trenchant issues in contemporary anthropologyand will be of great interest to scholars of anthropology, Latin American studies, and Native American studies.

Mary Chesnut's Civil War Epic, by Julia A. Stern

A genteel southern intellectual, saloniste, and wife to a prominent colonel in Jefferson Davis’s inner circle, Mary Chesnut today is remembered best for her penetrating Civil War diary. Composed between 1861 and 1865 and revised thoroughly from the late 1870s until Chesnut’s death in 1886, the diary was published first in 1905, again in 1949, and later, to great acclaim, in 1981. This complicated literary history and the questions that attend it—which edition represents the real Chesnut? To what genre does this text belong?—may explain why the document largely has, until now, been overlooked in literary studies.

Julia A. Stern’s critical analysis returns Chesnut to her rightful place among American writers. In Mary Chesnut’s Civil War Epic, Stern argues that the revised diary offers the most trenchant literary account of race and slavery until the work of Faulkner and that, along with his Yoknapatawpha novels, it constitutes one of the two great Civil War epics of the American canon. By restoring Chesnut’s 1880s revision to its complex, multidecade cultural context, Stern argues both for Chesnut’s reinsertion into the pantheon of nineteenth-century American letters and for her centrality to the literary history of women’s writing as it evolved from sentimental to tragic to realist forms.

Review
“In a work of genuine scholarship and searching criticism, Julia Stern reveals the complex power and beauty of Mary Chesnut's narrative and convincingly places it among the very best literature to emerge from the Civil War and its aftermath.”

(Eric Sunquist, University of California, Los Angeles)

“Mary Chesnut’s Civil War Epic is a magnificent accomplishment. Chesnut’s portrait of the Civil War—its politics, its psychic complexities, its quotidian forms—is brought to life and into focus through a breathtaking combination of literary and historical analysis.  Beautifully written, forcefully argued, and speculatively dazzling, Stern has given scholars of American literature and culture a fascinating account of one extraordinary woman’s life, writings, and memory, which for all of their singularity, ultimately disclose the traumas of a nation at war with itself.”

(Cindy Weinstein, California Institute of Technology)

“The book on Mary Chesnut we’ve been waiting for! In this comprehensive and daring work, Julia Stern addresses matters literary, textual, cultural, and historical, making it clear that Chesnut belongs at the center of nineteenth-century American literary and cultural studies. Beautifully written, the book is energized by Stern’s passion for her subject. It will quickly emerge as the standard work on Chesnut and as essential reading for anyone interested in the American South.”

(Robert S. Levine, University of Maryland)

“In Mary Chesnut’s Civil War, Julia Stern mounts an impassioned defense of Mary Chesnut’s centrality to the American literary tradition. By deftly detailing the complexities of textual history even as she illuminates a rich cultural context, Stern weaves together the multiple strands of Chesnut’s unfinished epic with great care and creativity. Insightful and evocative, Mary Chesnut’s Civil War Epic provides a wide-ranging discussion of the literary, generic, and cultural questions central to nineteenth-century literary studies.”

(Teresa A. Goddu, Vanderbilt University)

“This book is a triumph. Out of the confusion of multiple diaries, revisions and text fragments Julia Stern has given us nothing less than a new Mary Chesnut and a new Civil War epic. Her brilliant reconstruction of Chesnut’s literary ambitions makes a lasting contribution of significance to historians and literary scholars alike. If any chapter in American life reached epic proportions it was the Confederate one. In Stern’s book the rise and fall of that republic is evoked in all its riveting human drama.”

(Stephanie McCurry, University of Pennsylvania)

“An imaginative blend of feminist biography, literary criticism, and cultural brio.” (Tulsa Studies in Women's Literature)

Not what I expected
By Mimsey Tove
I thought this was the actual diary of Chesnut. Instead it is an academic analysis of the diaries that reads like a dissertation. I am not an academician and cannot evaluate this book given what it is. But the presentation by Amazon of what this book is was deceiving. I am disappointed. I wanted to read the diary itself not someone else's opinions about them.

excellent
By Gary C. Banks
Was surprised that her married name was Mary Chesnut. A search under Amazon concerning her home "Mulberry Plantation", it reads James and Mary Boykin Chestnut House. Then in the context it reads Chesnut. All these years I thought it was Chestnut. Putting that aside, the book was a clear depiction of
life in the 19th mid-century. A Southern lady who detested Slavery, but adherred to it's rigid institution. Julia A. Stern has written a gem. Not many people today realize the intricate day to day happenings of this era in American History. This is why I love reading first hand views by those that were alive at that time.

Summarizes some of the most important research in American psychology
By Bob Pr.
This book summarizes the work Scott, Fuller, and their team of scientists conducted over 20 years on 5 breeds of dogs. Before their work, American psychology had been very dominated by learning theory and tilted very much toward nurture in the nature-nurture (instinct vs. learning) debate. The work of the European ethologists such as Lorenz & Tinbergen on "critical periods" in early development had little impact until the studies (summarized here) of the Scott & Fuller group began appearing. Their careful scientific work demonstrated the importance and existence of time limited phases in the early life of dogs within which certain experiences need to occur or the dogs may be forever deficient. Their work (with that of Eckhard Hess's on ducks and geese) demonstrated that these critical or sensitive periods in early development could be scientifically studied in ways compatible with a scientific psychology.

The book is important to those interested in the history of behavioral sciences since the discoveries are applicable to many species (including humans) and not just the dog.

This book will always be especially valuable to dog breeders and trainers; its last chapters summmarize in very clear terms the particular phases in early development and experiences the dog needs to be adequately socialized. The reader can refer back to earlier chapters to get more information on how the experiments were conducted and the distribution of results. It answers questions on proper age that puppies can be separated from their mothers, what experiences are important to provide at what age, etc.

Why isn't this book more renoun?
By Leema
I chanced upon this book in my university library, and couldn't put it down! I learnt more about dogs in the first chapter than I had learnt in the whole year proceeding (and I consider myself to be fairly savvy in this area).

The experimental procedure in this book, though sometimes slightly troubling for me, as a dog lover, is truly valuable. I don't believe there is any other text that addresses 'nature vs nurture' in dogs better. It really provides food for thought.

If you're a dog trainer or a dog breeder, I really highly recommend this book.

Genetics and the Social Behavior of Dogs
By Dog Mom
This book was very detailed from a research stand point. It is somewhat dated as there have been many advancements in genetics since the 60's. I did take away knowledge about genetics and what does and does not dictate behavior of an animal. A good book in general. I would just like to see an updated version.
