Richard Stark was one of the many pseudonyms of Donald E. Westlake (1933-2008), a prolific author of noir crime fiction. In 1993 the Mystery Writers of America bestowed the society’s highest honor on Westlake, naming him a Grand Master.

Pinch the Payroll

"The Green Eagle Score", another adventure staring the antihero Parker. Parker has several rules that he does not normally violate: Do not work with amateurs, be cautious with people who have recently been in prison, avoid involvement with women during a heist, and avoid having a love triangle within the team. Parker violates all four in this story.

Marty Fusco, An acquaintance who was recently paroled, visits Parker and tries to sell him on an aggressive job - rob the payroll at an Air force Base. Marty's ex-wife is living with an Air Force payroll clerk named Stan Devers. The concepts is that with Stan's inside contacts they can rob the Air Force Finance Office, when it has a lot of money, the day before payday.

Parker is a great planner with normally good "common sense". But rob the payroll at an Air Force Base? How does one do that. A Base has built in security - people to check your identification, watch how you walk, ask for your orders, question whether you have authorization to be in the area (especially around Finance or anything valuable). Bases tend to have security fences, gates where police check everyone upon entry and exit. Air Force Bases tend to take matters seriously. So how can you steal the payroll?

This novel is suspenseful and intriguing as a plan slowly comes into focus. Parker is known to be a bit dystopian, always having the misfortune of an unexpected problem during the execution of his plan. What will it be this time? Will the Air Force change procedures? Will someone talk about the plan to outsiders? Will one of the amateurs become nervous and botch the plan? Will fighting break out among the members of the team? With a Parker story, the intervening problem could be anything.

I recommend this book. It is a fun read.

10th Novel in the Parker Series and One of the Best

The Green Eagle Score is the 10th novel in the 21 Parker novels series, it's a bit thicker than most so word count wise you're also getting a nice deal. Although this one is a little predictable finding out exactly what Parker does when the event you are expecting happens is still fun. In this adventure Parker is flown up from his vacation to a small town New York town, near an airforce base by the boyfriend of the ex of a former criminal colleague Marty Fusco. The plan is to rob the payload of cash that should be around $400 000 which makes up the wages of the base personnel. Parker's unsure at first as some who suddenly find themselves free from the life behind bars are so keen to impress themselves that they still have it that they end up back there. Also Devers, the airforce base employee who's idea it is is a young guy, whose never done this sort of thing before so who knows how he will act during and after the caper when it all counts. Plus the fact that Devers is sleeping with Fusco's ex and all three seem happy with this deal when normal people wouldn't, and the whole team relationship needed for the caper is a little weird. Throw in the fact the fact that the ex is seeing a psychiatrist and the whole deal gets even more complicated.

A very enjoyable Parker adventure though. if you're reading these in order next in the series is the Black Ice Score.

Mr Wald's works are a real joy to read!

I found this to be a very readable and accurate account of modern relativity physics for the layman within the unavoidable constraint of almost no background in higher mathematics

Good book, but not for everybody

Robert M. Wald is more known by his (very technical) book "General Relativity", where he explains Einstein's theory using a somewhat (sometimes too much) hard mathematical description. The main problem with this book, "Space, Time and Gravity" seems to be, for me, also its hardness; it is a clear and well written book, but maybe with language and focus some steps too high for the general public. Let give me an example: the book has ten chapters; the three first ones give a beautiful logical description of how space and time are viewed in Physics, but the next chapter becomes a bit too complicated, having a simple description of the Singularity Theorem, which for me seems a technical matter not very appealing. The final five chapters give an interesting account of the theory of black holes, but again this account seems to lack some taste, reminding me of a breakfast made of a superb toast served without jam or butter or anything to drink... However, I would recommend this book for undergraduate students of physics. For readers with a not-so-good mathematical background I would also suggest "Flat and Curved Space-Times" by G.F.R. Ellis and R.M. Williams (unhappily out of stock). The general public probably would enjoy more the reading of Einstein's "Relativity : The Special and the General Theory" (Paperback - May 1995) (a very recommendable book!) or the lengthy "Black Holes and Time Warps : Einstein's Outrageous Legacy", by Kip S. Thorne, et al. (Paperback - January 1995).

According to Stanovich, we're only just beginning to grapple with the deep consequences of Darwin's theory of natural selection. One such consequence, Richard Dawkins's theory of the "selfish gene," implies that living creatures are mere vehicles constructed to facilitate the survival and replication of genes. While Stanovich (How to Think Straight About Psychology), a cognitive scientist at the University of Toronto, agrees with the basic idea of the selfish gene, he finds fault with the conclusion that we are simply at its mercy. Drawing on recent research in cognitive science, he argues for an alternate conception of our relationship with our genes: we may be robots originally constructed as vehicles for genes, but our higher-level analytic reasoning abilities (themselves a product of evolution) enable us to rebel against our genetically programmed "autonomous set of systems," as well as the analogous cultural memes that infect our rational minds. A scientific and Creative Analysis of Human Potentials

Keith Stanovich is an accomplished behavioral scientist (psychologist) who applies all his scientific knowledge to answer a single question. We humans are the genetic product of hundreds of thousands of years of evolution, during most of which we lived as menial hunter-gatherers with a 35 year life expectancy. Given this genetic heritage, Stanovich asks, is there any way we can free ourselves from being the captives of our genetic pre-history?

The setting for this analysis is Richard Dawkins' argument in The Selfish Gene that we humans are "giant lumbering robots" who serve only as transient containers for our genes, who are the truly eternal replicators.

Stanovich makes the following arguments. First, there are two decision processes in the human brain. The first is the Autonomous Set of Systems (TASS) which we share with nonhuman animals, is a complete product of our evolutionary history, and only very imperfectly serves our contemporary interests. For instance, the TASS may tell us to overeat, have unsafe sex, or enjoy other forms of immediate gratification. However, there is a second decision center, which Stanovich calls 'analytical' that can override the TASS. This sounds like Freud's Id and Ego, which is one of Freud's unsullied contributions to human understanding. There is much evidence in favor of the TASS/analytical distinction.

Stanovich is to be praised for NEVER descending into the philosopher's morass, in which the question would be posed as one of 'free will.' I do not know if there is free will, but I do know the scientific evidence on which Stanovich's case is built.

The author's second thesis is that the same sociobiology that gave us selfish genes also seriously downgrades the importance of CULTURE in understanding human evolution and dynamics. Boy, is this ever true! His case is built up meticulously from a good knowledge of the contemporary research literature in the area, and is quite persuasive.

Stanovich's point is that the analytic brain can alter culture so as to overcome the biases of the TASS system, allowing humans to realize truly human and emancipatory goals. For instance, even though we all make elementary error in statistical decision-making (the brilliant work of Kahneman, Tversky, et al. shows this), experts can avoid the errors and can instruct others to do so as well.

But now comes Stanovich's third point: we cannot necessarily control culture so that it becomes an instrument of emancipation. According to memetic theory, we are as controlled by our memes (little nodules of culture) as we are by are genes. Stanovich does not manage to solve this problem, and suggests that we all be critically aware of the possibility that we adopt cultural practices that serve only to harm and constrain us. His list of rules for evaluation memes is quite useful and plausible.

I think the answer to Stanovich's problem is that the whole notion of memetics is rubbish. His defense of the notion in the book is uncharacteristically weak, to the point of being pathetic. For instance, he asserts that memetics itself is a meme complex, so if many people accept memetics and memetics is wrong, the memetics must be right! In fact, memetics posits behavior with no evolutionary justification. This is: we accept memes because they force themselves upon us. But, a creature who behaved in this way would be evolutionarily eclipsed by another who did not succumb.

The correct treatment of culture is that it is an epigenetic form of information transfer, and humans evolved to use it to enhance their fitness. The fact that sometimes we adopt harmful memes no more contradicts this than the fact that there are deleterious genetic mutation refutes Darwinism. This analysis is well developed in the research area of gene-culture coevolution, which I urge Stanovich to become (more) familiar with. It will open up vistas for him in pursuing his emancipatory project.

Jargon, essentially

Psychologists shouldn't go messing with hard biological science, and they certainly shouldn't drag Darwin's name into it, otherwise they should be styled evolutionary psychologists - or simply philosophers. When we get on to so-called philosophy we encounter the purest mumbo jumbo ('the classically modernist quest to find one's truest personal identity', p226). Our identity finds us, what can 'true' possibly mean in this context, and as for 'classically modernist'..! What's modern is dissatisfaction with the self we're stuck with, and what we need, especially in the current grossly unfair economic climate, is more stoicism - but that would put a whole raft of people out of business

Partially a development from the work of Richard Dawkins

This book is largely about what psychologist Keith Stanovich sees as the disconnect in the postmodern world between "maximizing genetic fitness and maximizing the satisfaction of human desires." (p. xiii) On the one hand we have the "replicators," the genes that blindly seek only their replication. On the other hand we have the vehicle (the phenotype), i.e., "us," which carries the genes, which Stanovich believes should seek its own happiness. He sees our brain as composed of two overlapping, but sometimes divergent, systems. One, the more primitive, he calls "The Autonomous Set of Systems" (TASS) and the other he calls an "analytic system." He calls this having "two minds in one brain."

The autonomous system is held on a "short leash" by the genes while the analytic system is on a longer leash; that is, TASS reacts to events in the environment almost automatically in close concert with the dictates of the replicators while the analytic system is more removed from innate drives and can analyze situations rationally and can act in terms of what is good for the vehicle rather than what promotes the replication of the genes. Note that these systems usually are in agreement and react to the environment in the same way. Threats to the well-being of the vehicle from predators and other dangers, signal the same avoidance behavior. However, sometimes there is a conflict. The example that Stanovich uses is TASS's need to flirt with the boss's wife, which might increase the replication of the genes, while the analytic system realizes that such behavior probably goes against the best interests of the vehicle (possible loss of job, etc.). Following the counsel of the rational analytic system instead of the urgings of TASS is what Stanovich calls "maximizing goal satisfaction at the level of the whole organism." (p. 64)

The title of the book comes from Richard Dawkins (and indeed this book is written in partial reaction to and in concert with Dawkins's ideas) who called organisms "survival machines" and "gigantic lumbering robots" in his famous opus, The Selfish Gene (1976). Stanovich wants to free us from the dictates of those selfish genes and so has constructed a "robot's rebellion." He believes we can use our rationality (our analytic system) to override the sometimes self-destructive inclinations of the more primitive set of brain systems. Stanovich is preeminently a rationalist and believes that right thought leading to right behavior will lead to a more fulfilling and happier life for the "robots." We need to be on the long leash from the genes, not the short leash, is his idea.

A strong point that Stanovich makes very well is that in the information societies of the modern world many of the talents that served us well in the Environment of Evolutionary Adaptiveness in the Pleistocene are "worthless" when (e.g.) trying to use "an international ATM machine with which you are unfamiliar" or when "arguing with your HMO about a disallowed medical procedure." (p. 124) He argues strongly that corporations and governments, through their advertizing and propaganda, have become very good at exploiting blind spots in our more primitive brain systems and getting us to do what is good for them and not necessarily good for us. I think this is correct, and that those of us who can see how the players in the modern economy are trying to use us for their benefit will avoid most of the more obvious traps and thereby increase our standard of living and presumably our chances for happiness.

Stanovich devotes a chapter to criticizing evolutionary psychologists for failing "to develop the most important implication of potential mismatches between the cognitive requirements of the EEA and those of the modern world," as he carefully phrases it on page 131. Nonetheless the psychology presented here is mainly a synthesis of cognitive psychology, brain science and evolutionary psychology and as such represents the latest in our attempt to understand ourselves.

He also devotes a chapter to the effects that another kind of replicator, the meme, has on our lives. I don't have the space to go into his ideas about memes and their implications, but I want to say that from my point of view the word "meme" is an approximate neologism for the word "idea." However, I think that it is a useful coinage and, like Stanovich's mind dualism, facilitates a new way of looking at and talking about how our brains work.

While I think this is an extremely interesting book that goes a long way toward showing us the sort of thinking that characterizes postmodern psychology, I must point out that Stanovich's mind dualism is a construct that, while based on his interpretation of recent findings, is nonetheless just that: a construct that will be refined as time goes by and eventually overturned for a new construct. As always in science we are increasing our understanding and expanding our knowledge as we move toward a final understanding that will most likely always lie tantalizingly in the distance.

Who's Afraid of Heidegger?

To read George Steiner is to bask in the presence of a great intellectual mind at work. The popular French frauds so à la mode today seem determined to instill nothing more than doubt, but I have always believed that clarity of thought (which does not preclude doubt) is what makes a critical text like Steiner's monograph on Heidegger valuable. Derrida merely muddies the water (as Nietzsche would say), but Steiner puts you in touch with one of the most obscure, difficult, and significant philosophers of the 20th century.

This is a short book, but it is slow reading. Not because of jargon-riddled wordplay, but because Steiner takes the time to untangle Heidegger's neologisms and strange, poetic language. Indeed, the first half of the book is titled "Basic Terms," an understanding of which will enable the reader to follow what Heidegger is trying to say about existence, authentic being, etc.. Steiner puts Heidegger's works into historical context and explains his methodology. To wit, Heidegger truly believes that we are spoken through language, so his philosophizing takes the form of etymologizing, going back to the origins of words, and recovering what can help us to think Being. According to Steiner, we never do get to defining Being, but the journey is rich and the effort is worthwhile.

Heidegger wants to overcome Western Metaphysics, which has been determined by Plato (who privileges the noumenal realm of ideas over the phenomenal world we live in) and Aristotle (who objectifies the natural, phenomenal world by subjecting it to study). Both strategies have left us without the ability to listen to or open ourselves up to Being, to standing in awe before its mystery.

Steiner also elucidates Heidegger's notion of authenticity (accepting that we are beings-toward-death), and his belief that anxiety, guilt, and care are inherent to authentic being. Why is this? Because we are both beings-in-the-world and beings-in-time. Death, for Heidegger, "is not an event; it is a phenomenon to be understood existentially," a process, part of our becoming. There is something extremely liberating in this notion, and both Heidegger and Steiner are aware of it. Angst, or existential anxiety, is not something to be eliminated with facile religious beliefs, counseling, or psycho-pharmaceuticals; it is to be understood as the mark, the indication of a being striving to live authentically, embracing fate (that which has been sent to a being-in-the-world).

Because we are beings-in-the-world we must also be beings that care: care about what others think of us; care about our world; and care for others. Steiner develops this idea as it is revealed in Heideggers' works, and he also addresses the issue of his involvement with Nazism. How does one reconcile caring, commitment, and concentration camps?

Recognizing that we are still too close to the Holocaust to be dispassionate, Steiner nonetheless attempts to understand this facet of Heidegger's life. Steiner is neither persecutorial nor apologetic. And he is much more disturbed by what was not said than by what was. Why, he asks repeatedly, was Heidegger silent about Europe's "season in Hell" after the war? Steiner has a difficult time getting past this, but does not belabor the issue. Heidegger's works are indeed part of the spirit of the times, the zeitgeist, and have certain affinities with Nazi ideology. But Steiner is unable to conclude that Heidegger was an anti-Semite; there does not seem to be enough convincing evidence for that. But still, why the silence?

All in all, Steiner's book is the best introduction to this influential thinker. My field is Comparative Literature, not Philosophy, and I feel as though I learned a tremendous amount by reading this book. If you only read one introduction to Heidegger, this monograph should be it.

Martin Heidegger is the most systematic of existentialists. His most important book,Being and Time(1927), is a study of the special peculiarities of human existence. For most European philosophers man is essentially a rational animal, a spectator of the world that is set over against him and in pursuit of knowledge about it. For Heidegger,man is pre-eminently an active being, immersed in the world, which is given a form only by his active preoccupations. It is man’s special fate to keep creating himself by decisions based on the possibilities open to him. He may try to escape from this by ‘inauthenticity’, the strategy of living only in accordance with routine or habit, the attempt to imitate a mere thing, or merge with the ‘theyness’ of others. For authentic living, what is necessary is the resolute confrontation with death, the annihilation that inspires metaphysical anxiety. Heidegger extracts a large dramatic potential from his truly initially abstract subject matter. He then turned from human existence to the mystery of being in general, a nebulous topic which he pursued in poetic meditations and by long excursions into etymology. He often welds ‘language into a kind of violent ordinariness’(Steiner). For him man was a “being-in-the-world”.

Steiner thinks that Heidegger failed to arrive at a suitable definition of Being in his attempt to cancel 2000 years of Christianity and excavate the sense of wonder open to the pre-Socratic Greeks. In the interregnum between the two world wars there had been an outpouring of philosophy, theology and poetics. Heidegger’s Being and Time is an attempt to overthrow traditions of metaphysical philosophy and the developments of science and technology, which were a by-product. There is a sense of renewal of language, of compressed word combinations, due to Heidegger’s attempts to return to forgotten sources, like an archaeologist excavating the truth. He uses imagery of forests and ‘paths in the clearing’, man as the ‘witness’ or ‘shepherd of being’. Heidegger expressed hatred of technological and industrial civilization. Steiner is evidently impressed by Heidegger, but felt you could replace 'Sein' by God in all the key passages, and then their meaning becomes clear. Steiner is troubled by Heidegger’s silence post-1945 about his Nazism, National Socialism, and has nothing to say about the holocaust. He concedes he’s a great philosopher, but a small man. Heidegger’s thought abstains from ethics in its purchase on Being and its flight from logic. The great tautologies of his philosophy went hand in hand with inhumanity.

There are many very intelligent and careful studies on Heidegger's work that approach his lifetime question on Being from different angles and perspectives. Steiner seems to have understood Heidegger by sort of getting under his skin, lucid, inmersed in his thought he articulates the notion of Being clearly, even artistically, this is the turning point to understanding Heidegger, suddenly his difficult expressions come to life on a higher perspective, if you have been troubled by the lack of understanding on the Notion of Being in Heidegger, in this book somewhere within those pages you may get the insight, ah, eureka.

Vera M. Kutzinski is the Martha Rivers Ingram Professor of English, professor of comparative literature, and director of the Alexander von Humboldt in English project at Vanderbilt University. Ottmar Ette is chair of Romance literature at the University of Potsdam, Germany, and the author of many books on von Humboldt. Together, they are the editors of Alexander von Humboldt’s Political Essay on the Island of Cuba: A Critical Edition, also published by the University of Chicago Press.

An amazing labor of love - for those interested in Humboldt and early American history

What is so wonderful about this book is all the work that clearly went into it. This book is a real assemblage of all the various pieces/sources that connect it in one place. The text by Humboldt is obviously not new - what is new here is the translation and that the entire text and illustrations are published at one time in one place. Though the original Humboldt text is probably not something for someone without background information on Humboldt, the introduction alone makes this book valuable. It places Humboldt and especially this work in its proper place in history.

At the end of the book the notes on the text and the notes on the books owned and probably used by Humboldt are invaluable to any researcher. This book again clearly shows Chicago University Press's commitment to publishing high quality history.

This book was a labor of love and is truly an amazing feat!

About the Author
Ian Tyrrell is professor in the School of History at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He is the author of five previous books, including Sobering Up: From Temperance to Prohibition in Antebellum America.

Historians in Public

I purchased this book for use in the courses I am completing in conjunction with my Public History degree major. I found it to be very informative. It contains data that is as relevant to the issues confronting present day public historians as it was to those holding the same positions between 1890 and 1970.
