D'Albuquerque's Children: Performing Tradition in Malaysia's Portuguese Settlement (Chicago Studies in Ethnomusicology), by Margaret Sarki

When the Portuguese seafarer Afonso de Albuquerque conquered the bustling port of Malacca in 1511, he effectively gained control of the entire South China Sea spice trade. Although their dominance lasted only 130 years, the Portuguese legacy lies at the heart of a burgeoning tourist attraction on the outskirts of the city, in which performers who believe they are the descendants of swashbuckling Portuguese conquerors encapsulate their "history" in a cultural stage show.

Using historical and ethnographic data, Margaret Sarkissian reveals that this music and dance draws on an eclectic array of influences that span the Portuguese diaspora (one song conjures up images of Lucille Ball impersonating Carmen Miranda on "I Love Lucy"). Ironically, she shows, what began as a literate tradition in the 1950s has now become an oral one so deeply rooted in Settlement life that the younger generation, like the tourists, now see it as an unbroken heritage stretching back almost 500 years. A fascinating case of "orientalism in reverse," D'Albuquerque's Children illuminates the creative ways in which one community has adapted to life in a postcolonial world.

From Library Journal
This study explores the use of performance in festivals and cultural shows to represent the Portuguese heritage of the Eurasian minority in Malaysia. Sarkissian (music, Smith Coll.) argues that Malaysia's heterogeneous Eurasian population latched onto its Portuguese identity when the expression of British identity, previously seen as a sign of elite status, became a sensitive issue at the end of the colonial age. Repertoires of Portuguese-style music and dance, now presented to outsiders as though they have been handed down over the generations since perhaps 1511, have, in reality, only been cobbled together since 1952. Moreover, they reflect intentional strategies on the part of Eurasians to create an acceptable image for their community in modern Malaysia. This book is informative, interestingly written, and up-to-date in its theoretical outlook. A solid contribution to ongoing debates in anthropology about identity and representation in the postcolonial world; recommended for academic libraries and collections in the performing arts, cultural studies, tourism, and Southeast Asian studies.DJay H. The Portuguese music in Malaysia
By Luis Ramos
This book provides some interesting information on the culture, especially musical traditions, of the Portuguese settlement in Malaysia. This is a good book, but this definitely college language so it can be somewhat hard to read for some people. Besides cultural aspects, an historical background is also provided.

Not without Madness: Perspectives on Opera, by Fabrizio Della Seta

Opera often seems to arouse either irrational enthusiasm or visceral dislike. Such madness, as Goethe wrote, is indispensable in all theater, and yet in practice, sentiment and passion must be balanced by sense and reason. Exploring this tension between madness and reason, Not without Madness presents new analytical approaches to thinking about eighteenth- and nineteenth-century opera through the lenses of its historical and cultural contexts. In these twelve essays, Fabrizio Della Seta explores the concept of opera as a dramatic event and an essential moment in the history of theater. Examining the meaning of opera and the devices that produce and transmit this meaning, he looks at the complex verbal, musical, and scenic mechanisms in parts of La sonnambula, Ernani, Aida, Le nozze di Figaro, Macbeth, and Il trovatore. He argues that approaches to the study of opera must address performance, interpretation, composition, reception, and cultural ramifications. Purely musical analysis does not make sense unless we take into account music’s dramatic function. Containing many essays available for the first time in English, Not without Madness bridges recent divisions in opera studies and will attract musicologists, musicians, and opera lovers alike.

Review
“Not without Madness abounds with highly original concepts and insights. Fabrizio Della Seta tackles the subject of meaning in music and opera in an engaging way, responding to a wealth of stimuli not only from the fields of musicology, but also from literature and philosophy. This book stands out as a remarkably dense, exciting, and rewarding read.” (Francesco Izzo, University of Southampton)

“An admirable contribution to opera criticism. Fabrizio Della Seta explores, with great insight, some of the most beloved and influential operas by Mozart, Meyerbeer, Verdi, and others. His remarks on the ways in which these works have been discussed by generations of critics and scholars are immensely thoughtful and stimulating.” (Ralph P. Locke, Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester)

“Dense and erudite, these essays will be valuable to those interested in 19th-century opera criticism.” (Choice)

“There is much here to satisfy any reader with an interest in getting a close look at some key operatic moments.”

The Last Days of Hitler, by Hugh Trevor-Roper

Late in 1945, Trevor-Roper was appointed by British Intelligence in Germany to investigate conflicting evidence surrounding Hitler's final days and to produce a definitive report on his death. The author, who had access to American counterintelligence files and to German prisoners, focuses on the last ten days of Hitler's life, April 20-29, 1945, in the underground bunker in Berlin—a bizarre and gripping episode punctuated by power play and competition among Hitler's potential successors.

"From exhaustive research [Trevor-Roper] has put together a carefully documented, irrefutable, and unforgettable reconstruction of the last days in April, 1945."—New Republic

"A book sound in its scholarship, brilliant in its presentation, a delight for historians and laymen alike."—A. J. P. Taylor, New Statesman

Hugh Trevor–Roper, a British intelligence officer, was given the task of solving the mystery. His brilliant piece of detective work proved finally that Hitler had killed himself in Berlin. It also produced one of the most fascinating history books ever written. Originally published in 1947 and now revised, The Last Days of Hitler tells the extraordinary story of those final days of the Thousand Year Reich—a dramatic, carefully planned finale to a terrible chapter of history.

Interesting Albeit Dated Overview Of Hitler's Last Days
By Barron Laycock
The chief impediment to this literate and interesting overview of the last few weeks of life in the bunker with the surrounded, embattled, and doomed denizens of the Third Reich is the fact that it was written so soon after the end of the war itself, and therefore had no access to the vast array of material that has since come to light regarding Hitler's last days. Thus, unlike either John Toland's "The Last Hundred Days" or Cornelius Ryan's "The Last Battle", it does not take advantage of the incredible store of archives that became available in the decades that have followed its publication in the late 1940s.
Moreover, it cannot use the kinds of secret data now coming to light within the former Soviet Union which contemporary authors like Ian Kershaw use so effectively in retelling the story in books like "Hitler: Nemesis". Still, this is a wonderful book, one that is both immensely readable and marvelously entertaining. At times it is almost comical, with the nazi High Command being so estranged and cut off from the outside world that their conversations seem bizarre and surreal. Even at the end Hitler hoped for rescue from armies long since defeated and destroyed by the marauding Russians, who were angrily raping, pillaging, and murdering their way across the cityscapes above.
In the end we see just how perverted, committed, and maniacal the embattled Nazis are, with few of them even opting for survival in a post-Nazi world. Not only Hitler but also several of his closest associates chose suicide over capture or escape. Only Bormann and some of his underlings seem to have a realistic notion of what surrounds them, and only they seem willing to risk capture and death to escape to safety in the chaos that was raging all around the bunker in the streets and buildings of besieged Berlin.
This is a terrific book, one that in spite of its shortcomings should be read by all serious students of the Second World War. Given the fact that it was written so soon after the end of the war itself, the author was able to interview many of the surviving principles before they disappeared into the dustbin of obscurity, and to take advantage of the times in effectively using contemporary memories and archives before they were forgotten or misplaced. In reading it one becomes much more aware of the ways in which time is of the essence in historical study, both in terms of how the author was both given an advantage based on his rapid response to the event in question, but also in terms of how he was hampered by not having access to materials and archives that have since come to light. I strongly recommend this book. Enjoy.

A Classic - in both the good and bad sense.
By A Customer
This book is a classic in two senses. On the good side, it is well-written, compelling, interesting, and emotionally gripping. It tells - with much detail and drama - one of the most dramatic events of WWII, the life of Hitler and his followers in the doomed bunker in Berlin. This is why it is still read today.
On the bad side, it had been written very shortly after the war, so it is naturally dated and inaccurate in certain issues - although not on any very important issues, and not due to the author's fault or lack of research. Rather, it is due to the fact that new material had come to light since then, especially since the opening of the Soviet archives after the collapse of the soviet union.
It is, in a sentence, a good starting point for anybody interested in the subject of Hitler's last days. Trevor-Roper's description of the main events have by and large stood the test of time and further research. Once you read this highly readable and important book, you can move on to books that include more recent rsearch, e.g. Toland's THE LAST 100 DAYS or Joachim Fest's HITLER - NEMESIS.

The first bunker history, but long ago surpassed
By J. Michael
By the nature of their profession, the controversies in which historians usually become embroiled are musty, dusty and arcane. Hugh Trevor-Roper, on the other hand, found himself placed in the middle of a very contemporary and potentially dangerous superpower dispute when, in response to Soviet accusations and disinformation, he was ordered by the British government to verify the death of Adolf Hitler and establish the facts surrounding his final days. In spite of Soviet stonewalling and obstruction, Mr. Trevor-Roper (later Lord Dacre) established beyond a shadow of a doubt that Hitler died by his own hand on April 30, 1945 in his Berlin bunker. "The Last Days of Hitler" is a very well-written history, which nevertheless suffers from several serious shortcomings.

In the first place, and this is no judgement on the author, in 1945 he did not have access to several important witnesses who would not return from Soviet captivity for more than 10 years, such as Guensche, Linge, Bauer, Mohnke and Rattenhuber. Thus, there are more than a few errors, or at least discrepancies with later published works, such as the method of Hitler's suicide, the men present at Hitler's immolation, and Hitler's supposed reliance on astrology. Trevor-Roper believed that Bormann was still alive, was unsure whether Generals Krebs and Burgdorf had survived the bunker and made entirely too much of Speer's assassination daydreams. These omissions and interpretations are understandable though. What is inexcusable is the ad hominem vituperation the author unleashes upon pretty much every single German in this book.

I realize that it is de rigeur for English-speaking historians of the Third Reich to pepper their manuscripts with insults towards Nazism's leading personages, but Mr. Trevor-Roper's rabid invective goes so far overboard that the tone of this book more resembles a propaganda pamphlet than a work of history. Sparing only the sacrosanct fraud Speer, the author not only heaps abuse on the dead Nazi bigwigs but on apolitical army officers and the low-level sources who made his book possible. And apart from the expected insulting words, like "detestable" and "monkeys", he spends most of the book making snide remarks about the defects of the German mind and then- incredibly- decries racialism in a flatulently philosophizing epilogue. Such angry passion is expected in the wake of a great war, but it should have been tempered in what was supposed to be a work of history.

Most grating though, is how the author, with true Oxford snobbishness, constantly condemns every German (except Speer of course) in this book as a stupid fool. It's that kind of lazy, biased thinking that has set an example for 3 generations of court historians whose idea of profundity is to ask how a nation as modern and civilized as Germany could have followed an ideology as stupid/evil/barbaric as Nazism. The answer of course, is that the court historians' presupposition is faulty. As Trevor-Roper's bete noir- A.J.P. Taylor- explained in his "Origins of the Second World War", Nazism's ultimate aims (world-power status and expanded territory) reflected what most Germans regarded as German self-interest, not to mention reflecting the political principles of the world's other major players: the U.S., Britain and the Soviet Union. There was nothing confusing or particularly anomalous about Nazism's main goals, or its leadership, when viewed in context. If its leaders were stupid (which is highly debatable, considering the nation's achievements), then they were no more stupid than governments usually are (George W. Bush and Tony Blair?). If Nazi Germany's racism and territorial expansion was evil, then one would like to know how it differed (except perhaps in scale and brutality) from the spirit which created the British Empire and motivated American Manifest Destiny (where_did_all those Indians go?). And if German nationalism was somehow perverted, then I think it has a parallel in America, with its plethora of patriots whose self worth hinges on the fact that "We're #1" and have the ability to obliterate any nation on earth (and sometimes do). The point is that, in the big picture, Germany's actions and geopolitical aims weren't so different from the nations that fought it. Its only mistake was to pursue its empire 100 years too late, and in the middle of Europe. Lord Dacre would consider that kind of thinking heretical, which is why the historically curious should probably consult more calm and balanced historians for insight.

Gandhi and the Stoics: Modern Experiments on Ancient Values, by Richard Sorabji

“Was Gandhi a philosopher? Yes.” So begins this remarkable investigation of the guiding principles that motivated the transformative public acts of one of the top historical figures of the twentieth century. Richard Sorabji, continuing his exploration of the many connections between South Asian thought and ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, brings together in this volume the unlikely pairing of Mahatma Gandhi and the Stoics, uncovering a host of parallels that suggests a deep affinity spanning the two millennia between them. While scholars have long known Gandhi’s direct Western influences to be Platonic and Christian, Sorabji shows how a look at Gandhi’s convergence with the Stoics works mutually, throwing light on both of them. Both emphasized emotional detachment, which provided a necessary freedom, a suspicion of universal rules of conduct that led to a focus not on human rights but human duties—the personally determined paths each individual must make for his or her self. By being indifferent, paradoxically, both the Stoics and Gandhi could love manifoldly. In drawing these links to the fore, Sorabji demonstrates the comparative consistency of Gandhi’s philosophical ideas, isolating the specific ideological strengths that were required to support some of the most consequential political acts and experiments in how to live.

Review
“Gandhi and the Stoics shows us how valuable a comparative approach can still be in providing us with new ways of reading some of the world’s most influential texts, as well as in reflecting on one of the twentieth century’s most influential human lives.”
(Charles A. Goodman Ethics)

“Richard Sorabji offers us a way to think about Gandhi’s nonviolence in a philosophically complex way that also places the Mahatma in a much broader historical canvas, one that includes not only Stoicism and ancient philosophy in general, but also early Christianity and its ‘recovery’ by the Mahatma’s correspondent, Tolstoy. The dialogue that Gandhi and the Stoics creates between these great and otherwise disconnected movements provides an immense pleasure to the reader. Suddenly we are able to exit the narrow compass of Indian nationalism, within which Gandhi tends to be squeezed by academics, and consider his career from a number of fresh perspectives.” (Faisal Devji, St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford 2012-03-09)

“The book is an important and distinctive contribution to the history of ideas and to Gandhian studies.” (Vinit Haksar, University of Edinburgh 2012-04-26)

“By looking at Gandhi from an unusual comparative perspective, Sorabji skillfully highlights several unexplored aspects and perplexities of Gandhi's moral thought. His book makes a truly original contribution to the growing philosophical literature on Gandhi.” (Bhikhu Parekh, University of Westminster 2012-04-26)

“By juxtaposing Gandhi’s thought with that of the Stoics, Richard Sorabji not only provides important insights into these thinkers but also sheds new light on the philosophical questions of emotional detachment, non-violence, universal love, and unique personal duties. Indeed, this book presents a compelling case for why these often neglected themes deserve the attention of contemporary moral philosophy. Sorabji discusses these questions in a manner that is philosophically provocative, personally compelling, historically interesting, and yet accessible to a broad audience. Gandhi and the Stoics is a book from which all who read it will learn a great deal. Its spirit of interdisciplinarity and comparative analysis is commendable, as is the grace with which it is written.” (Mohamed Mehdi, Oakton Community College)

About the Author
Richard Sorabji is Honorary Fellow of Wolfson College at Oxford University and fellow and emeritus professor at King’s College, London. Cezanne and the End of Impressionism: A Study of the Theory, Technique, and Critical Evaluation of Modern Art, by Richard Shiff

Drawing on a broad foundation in the history of nineteenth-century French art, Richard Shiff offers an innovative interpretation of Cézanne's painting. He shows how Cézanne's style met the emerging criteria of a "technique of originality" and how it satisfied critics sympathetic to symbolism as well as to impressionism. Expanding his study of the interaction of Cézanne and his critics, Shiff considers the problem of modern art in general. He locates the core of modernism in a dialectic of making (technique) and finding (originality). Ultimately, Shiff provides not only clarifying accounts of impressionism and symbolism but of a modern classicism as well.

you've never known cezanne...and you never will.
By nkb
The title of my review may cause you to think that I didn't like this book...on the contrary, Shiff provides such a sophisticated argument about evolution of Cézanne's painting through his development of the concepts "maker and finder". Maker is the artist that "discovers" a style and develops that style in his/her work. Finder is the artist looking for a style. (Obviously an incredibly reductive summary of the two terms). Shiff compellingly argues that Cézanne exists as both maker and finder. This book isn't a quick read...but anyone attempting to tackle such a complex artist as Cézanne, couldn't possibly write a simple, one-dimensional book. I will be using this book in my impressionism class this winter. Hats off to Professor Shiff...I've never seen anything better written on Cézanne.

Critical Terms for Religious StudiesFrom The University of Chicago Press

A century that began with modernism sweeping across Europe is ending with a remarkable resurgence of religious beliefs and practices throughout the world. Wherever one looks today, from headlines about political turmoil in the Middle East to pop music and videos, one cannot escape the pivotal role of religious beliefs and practices in shaping selves, societies, and cultures.

Following in the very successful tradition of Critical Terms for Literary Studies and Critical Terms for Art History, this book attempts to provide a revitalized, self-aware vocabulary with which this bewildering religious diversity can be accurately described and responsibly discussed. Leading scholars working in a variety of traditions demonstrate through their incisive discussions that even our most basic terms for understanding religion are not neutral but carry specific historical and conceptual freight.

These essays adopt the approach that has won this book's predecessors such widespread acclaim: each provides a concise history of a critical term, explores the issues raised by the term, and puts the term to use in an analysis of a religious work, practice, or event. Moving across Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Native American and Mayan religions, contributors explore terms ranging from experience, territory, and image, to God, sacrifice, and transgression.

The result is an essential reference that will reshape the field of religious studies and transform the way in which religion is understood by scholars from all disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, psychology, cultural studies, gender studies, and literary studies.

From Library Journal
Taylor (humanities, Williams Coll.) has edited an intriguing resource for scholars of religious studies. While its title gives the false impression that this book is similar to a dictionary, it is actually a collection of 23 essays devoted to critical terms such as body, gender, God, and time. The contributor list reads like a who's who in religious, philosophical, and literary studies, and each term is explored in its widest theological and philosophical dimensions. Special emphasis is placed on each term's development and association with particular religious works, rituals, events, and worships. The attempt to be inclusive of all religions succeeds, although there is a predominance of Christian-based work. Of special interest are the essays on gender, body, time, and territory, areas of study presently in vogue. Though this book is intended for serious scholars, lay readers genuinely interested in religious studies will find it a rich source. Recommended for all libraries, especially theological ones.?Glenn Masuchika, Chaminade Univ. Lib., Honolulu

An insightful introduction to critical religious studies.
By A Customer
Critical Terms for Religious Studies is a wonderful introduction to religious studies. It uses interesting examples drawn from a wide range of religions to make its points clear. Topics are drawn from both obviously religious terminology, such as belief and God, to seemingly non-religious terms, such as culture and experience. The result is a deeply insightful book that gives the beginning student a lay of the religious studies landscape.

A theological discussion
By Barbara L. Heckman
This book provides a theologian with a nice summary and dialogue of 22 concepts related to religious inquiry. The various authors draw on Tillich, Hegel, Heidegger, Kant any many other scholars to provide a format or review of the term being discussed. This is not a book meant for a lay person or beginning college student. A graduate theological student may find it appealing as an aid for her/his own research. As a college religion instructor, I had hoped this book would be a helpful tool for my students. It is too advanced.

The Communal Experience: Anarchist and Mystical Communities in Twentieth Century America (Phoenix Book), by Laurence R. Veysey

The original impulse for groups to separate from society and establish communities of their own was religious. Though the religious side of this drive toward separation remains strong, the last two centuries have seen the appearance of secular communities with a socialist or anarchist orientation. In The Communal Experience, nominated for a National Book Award in 1973, Laurence Veysey explores the close resemblances between the secular and religious forms of cultural radicalism through intensive observation of four little-known communities.

Veysey compares the history of secular communities such as the early Ferrer Colony and Modern School, of Shelton, New Jersey, with contemporary anarchist communities in New York, Vermont, and New Mexico. Religious communes—"Communities of Discipline"—such as the Vedanta monasteries of the early twentieth century are compared with contemporary mystical communities in New Mexico. Distinctions between the anarchist and the mystical groups are most obvious from their approach to communal life. As Veysey shows, anarchist communities are loose, unstructured, voluntaristic; the mystics establish more rigid life-styles, focus on spiritual leaders, and hold community a secondary goal to self-realization. In a new preface written for this Phoenix Edition, he describes his return to a New Mexican mystical community and the changes that have occurred in the six years since his last visit.

Interesting

Looking for books that mention the commune scene of Placitas, New Mexico?

If so, check out this book.

It's got a good chapter on them, and good chapters on other communes elsewhere--in New York, Vermont, northern New Mexico, and elsewhere, with insightful essays that tie everything together.

The book is well enough written that it was nominated for a National Book Award in 1973, though it lost to John William's Roman epic "Augustus."

I recommend it.

A VERY HELPFUL ACADEMIC STUDY OF ANARCHIST/RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES

Laurence Veysey is a Professor Emeritus from UC Santa Cruz. In this 1973 book (republished in 1978 with a new preface by the author), he studies a variety of "Anarchist and Mystical" communities in modern America. In the new Preface, Veysey observes, "The brief but spectacular resurgence of alternative communities in this country from about 1967 to 1973 furnished a superb opportunity to study them at firsthand. This book offers the fruits of such direct investigation, set against accounts of strikingly similar undertakings which existed several decades earlier."

The book includes chapters on "The Ferrer Colony and Modern School of Stelton," "Contemporary Anarchistic Communes," "Vedanta Monasteries," and "New Mexico, 1971: Inside a 'New Age' Social Order."

Veysey notes that the Ferrer School "For a long time ... ran the only progressive school in America which deliberately sought a working-class clientele."

He covers the Vedanta movement in some detail, and notes that "The Vedanta movement never attracted a mass American following. Federal religious census figures show only 340 members in 1906 ... Total membership rose to 628 in 1936, to around 1,000 in 1960, and perhaps 1,200 today." He also observes that "the early followers of Vedanta (were) disproportionately feminine, besides being well-to-do and cosmopolitan." and that "All the Vedanta swamis have depended upon gifts from the members of their congregations to survive."

Disappointingly, Veysey writes, "The record of counter-cultural movements seems to suggest that, even in the United States, the most heavily authoritarian and intensely charismatic of these social movements possess the greater internal elan."

Legal Language, by Peter M. Tiersma

Statutes, judicial opinions, contracts, deeds, and wills profoundly affect our daily lives, but their language tends to be often nearly impossible to understand. In this lively history of legal language, Peter Tiersma slices through the thicket of legalese, explaining where it comes from, why lawyers continue to cling to it, and why it's doesn't have to be an inevitable feature of our legal system.

"Legal Language will resonate with lawyers . . . and any non-lawyer who has waded through legal documents, or has tuned in to the latest trial on Court TV."—Carmie D. Boccuzzi, Jr., Boston Book Review

"[A] masterful, highly readable, and enjoyable book. . . . Legal Language is truly a fun book to read."—David Schultz, Law and Politics Book Review

From Library Journal
Tiersma (Loyola Law Sch.) has written an interesting descriptive history of how Anglo-American "legalese" developed and continues to thrive as we move into the 21st century. He begins by tracing the roots of legalistic terminology back to Celtic times and then details its expansion during the Anglo-Saxon era as certain words were refined to minimize confusion and emphasize clarity. At the same time, this boom in terminology set the legal profession apart from all others, thereby underscoring its social importance. Tiersma contends that this dual nature of legal language profoundly affects the legal profession to this day. To drive home this theme, he thoroughly examines several facets of legal communication, such as anachronistic language, the wording of state and federal statutes, and even lawyer Johnnie Cochran's oral defense of O.J. Simpson. A scholarly effort that will perhaps be valued more by linguists than by lawyers; recommended for larger public and academic libraries.ASteven Anderson, Gordon Feinblatt Rothman Hoffberger & Hollander, Towson, MD

A thoughtful, linguistic perspective on legal language.
By Wayne Schiess
I'm a teacher of legal writing, and I want all my students to read this book--and every lawyer, too. It offers insights into legal language that I have not seen anywhere else: how lawyers use language to set themselves apart; how statutes employ archaisms to present an air of authority; how jury instructions confuse jurors.
It also presents the many reasons that legal language came to be the way it is, while avoiding simplistic explanations. And though it discusses many ways that legal language fails us, it gives just as many ways to improve it.
Most important, the book takes legal language seriously, calling it a "sublanguage" of English and "a set of linguistic features that are superimposed on everyday speech." At the same time, it recognizes that lawyers who care about communicating will have to make difficult decisions about what parts of legal language to keep and what parts to abandon.

wonderful demystification of the club
By A Customer
Mr. Tiersma's book is a wonderful shibboleth into the miasmatic and confusing world of the legal lexicon. A superlative source for clear prose. Wait, I thought that it was lawyers who used confusing language.

Bengal in Global Concept History: Culturalism in the Age of Capital (Chicago Studies in Practices of Meaning), by Andrew Sartori

Today people all over the globe invoke the concept of culture to make sense of their world, their social interactions, and themselves. But how did the culture concept become so ubiquitous? In this ambitious study, Andrew Sartori closely examines the history of political and intellectual life in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Bengal to show how the concept can take on a life of its own in different contexts.
Sartori weaves the narrative of Bengal’s embrace of culturalism into a worldwide history of the concept, from its origins in eighteenth-century Germany, through its adoption in England in the early 1800s, to its appearance in distinct local guises across the non-Western world. The impetus for the concept’s dissemination was capitalism, Sartori argues, as its spread across the globe initiated the need to celebrate the local and the communal. Therefore, Sartori concludes, the use of the culture concept in non-Western sites was driven not by slavish imitation of colonizing powers, but by the same problems that repeatedly followed the advance of modern capitalism. This remarkable interdisciplinary study will be of significant interest to historians and anthropologists, as well as scholars of South Asia and colonialism.

Review
“This is an extraordinarily ambitious work that provides an authoritative account of the history of colonial and postcolonial Bengali intellectual life and the nationalist movement. By apprehending this complicated history of ideas and politics through the prism of how the culture concept—a global idea—becomes a Bengali concept, Sartori makes a signal, unique contribution to anthropology, critical Marxist approaches, and especially to the crowded literature on postcoloniality and cultural theoretical understandings of globalization. That Sartori is fully successful in coherently weaving the complex threads of his concerns together is the book's most important accomplishment.” (George Marcus, University of California, Irvine)

“This is an innovative work of exceptional intellectual quality—a sophisticated study of a significant but analytically intractable subject in Bengali intellectual history. Sartori’s approach is methodologically complex, and he combines this with a rich reading of a great deal of Bengali material.”

(Sudipta Kaviraj, Columbia University)

"A skilfully crafted, theoretically sophisticated and densely textured book. It does the difficult work of bringing materiality into the heart of a history of ideas." (Prathama Banerjee Economic and Political Weekly)

"[Sartori's] work provides rigorously argued grist for discussions of comparative colonialisms rooted in rich and non-deterministic readings of change in particular moments and places." (Jason Cons Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History)

"Sartori presents a highly disciplined, careful, and imaginative intellectual history, and his Marxian history of ideas . . . will incite lively debate and provide a much-needed stimulus to the writing of South Asian intellectual history." (Kris Manjapra Journal of Interdisciplinary History)
