Interest in the authentic performance of early music has grown dramatically in recent years, and scholarly investigation has particularly benefited the study of keyboard music of the classical period. In this landmark publication, the most comprehensive study written on Haydn's keyboard sonatas, Laszlo Somfai offers an unorthodox approach to the interpretation of this repertory. Somfai focuses on the true "acoustic form" that Haydn intended in these works. He begins with a thorough study of Haydn's instruments - the harpsichord, the Viennese fortepiano, and the English piano - and their development. After recommending instruments appropriate for modern use, he discusses performance practice and style, explains the peculiarities of Haydn's manuscripts in the context of eighteenth-century notation, and provides specific suggestions for playing ornaments, improvising, slurring, and dynamics. An excellent book on a rarely discussed topic. Somfai is an expert on the subject, and the translation of his original Hungarian prose into English is unusually well done. If you are interested in Haydn's keyboard sonatas, both from an historical as well as performance aspect, this is a fine book to have. It is not a steady barrage of theory, but helps establish an historical context as well.

This posthumous collection of essays doesn't work well as a book but is worth reading anyway. Shklar's (Ordinary Vices, 1984, etc.) untimely death in 1992 left a hole in Harvard's political-science department and a project on American political thought unfinished. Two colleagues attempt to address the latter in this volume by presenting 13 of her essays on the subject, only four of which have previously appeared. While the serious, impressive scholarship characteristic of Shklar's work is evident here, however, the result is more frustrating than illuminating. Writing about American political thought has always been problematic: Without great philosophical works to serve as touchstones, scholars are confronted with a wide variety of source material to blend together into a coherent theory. Shklar quite rightly rejects the traditional oversimplifications of consensualism (Americans are all basically liberals) and exceptionalism (American political experience is unique) that have been used to obscure the richness and diversity of American political thought. Unfortunately, her impressive forays into that richness and diversity--exploring figures from Hamilton to Hawthorne, and topics ranging from friendship to rights--yields no general framework that illuminates the whole. The veins of American intellectual history are mined selectively, at times repetitively, and with large areas left untouched. For example, while the Jefferson-Adams correspondence is indeed one of the great treasures of early American political thought, it's introduced and consulted extensively in several essays, while anything beyond a passing mention of a person or event from the postCivil War period is hard to find. Historical description rather than philosophical generalization was always Shklar's strength, but with the time to shape these essays into a book her efforts would have constituted a much more significant contribution to American political thought. Don't let the title fool you

This book puts together a perspective of American history from a philosophical and historical framework that is groundbreaking. One of the wierd things I liked about this book is found in the 8th Chapter of the precisions that she gives in understanding American history using the ideas embodied in the 'Two Concept of Liberty' found in Isaiah Berlin's work in the classic 'Four Essays of Liberty.' After reading this book and see how she sharply employs the fine element of criticism when referring to DeTocqueville on his view of Democracy and Thomas Jefferson you will see things and even the world differently. This is a book that has been decades overdue.

Elisabetta Caminer Turra (1751-96) was one of the most prominent women in eighteenth-century Italy and a central figure in the international "Republic of Letters." About the Author
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was born in Lyons on June 29, 1900. He flew for the first time at the age of twelve, at the Ambérieu airfield, and it was then that he became determined to be a pilot. He kept that ambition even after moving to a school in Switzerland and while spending summer vacations at the family's château at Saint-Maurice-de-Rémens, in eastern France. (The house at Saint-Maurice appears again and again in Saint-Exupéry's writing.)

Later, in Paris, he failed the entrance exams for the French naval academy and, instead, enrolled at the prestigious art school l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In 1921 Saint-Exupéry began serving in the military, and was stationed in Strasbourg. There he learned to be a pilot, and his career path was forever settled.

After leaving the service, in 1923, Saint-Exupéry worked in several professions, but in 1926 he went back to flying and signed on as a pilot for Aéropostale, a private airline that flew mail from Toulouse, France, to Dakar, Senegal. In 1927 Saint-Exupéry accepted the position of airfield chief for Cape Juby, in southern Morocco, and began writing his first book, a memoir called Southern Mail, which was published in 1929. He then moved briefly to Buenos Aires to oversee the establishment of an Argentinean mail service; when he returned to Paris in 1931, he published Night Flight, which won instant success and the prestigious Prix Femina.

Always daring, Saint-Exupéry tried in 1935 to break the speed record for flying from Paris to Saigon. Unfortunately, his plane crashed in the Libyan desert, and he and his copilot had to trudge through the sand for three days to find help. In 1938 he was seriously injured in a second plane crash, this time as he tried to fly between New York City and Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. The crash resulted in a long convalescence in New York.

Saint-Exupéry's next novel, Wind, Sand and Stars, was published in 1939. A great success, the book won the Académie Française's Grand Prix du Roman (Grand Prize for Novel Writing) and the National Book Award in the United States. At the beginning of the Second World War, Saint-Exupéry flew reconnaissance missions for France, but he went to New York to ask the United States for help when the Germans occupied his country. He drew on his wartime experiences to write Flight to Arras and Letter to a Hostage, both published in 1942. His classic The Little Prince appeared in 1943. Later in 1943 Saint-Exupéry rejoined his French air squadron in northern Africa. Despite being forbidden to fly (he was still suffering physically from his earlier plane crashes), Saint-Exupéry insisted on being given a mission. On July 31, 1944, he set out from Borgo, Corsica, to overfly occupied France. He never returned.

A surprisingly noble and generous view of life

I would add to the previous three reviews a brief note on the exceptional quality of the English translation. It is rare indeed for a translation to rival its uniquely poetic original. There will be plenty of readers for whom the esthetic enjoyment of the finely mastered English language will provide, on its own, a source of inspiration and endless wonder. This book is also one of my most prized posessions. Its reaparition in print may signify the longing for civilization and reason of a world saturated with ignorance, abject superficiality and blindly upheld pseudo-values. Those still able to think - rejoice!

A book for all seasons of life and for all leaders

This is an inspiring, life changing book for all wanna-be leaders. Like Pascal's pensées, it is a collection of thoughts slowly matured through Saint-Exupery's extraordinary life. The English translation has 123 selected thoughts, the French (more redundant version) has 219. The main character of the book is a king who governs the people of a city in the Sahara desert. He rules harshly (by today's diluted democratic standards) but in sincere and deep love for his people. His sense of duty is a model to all leaders. There is no story line as in the Little Prince story. The thoughts are profound and fertile. You will find yourself constantly using a highlighter, as do people reading the Bible. Some thoughts may even permanently change the way you view things. Like waves hammering the rocky shore, they are constantly rephrased, rebuilt around different images, repeatedly knocking you out of your comfort zone - and forcing you to reconsider what you have always found acceptable (read St-Ex's views on liberty). Saint-Exupery celebrates labour, movement, force in motion, regenerative and creative struggles. Like Pascal, he harshly critiques"l'esprit de divertissement", this anaesthetic leisure which leads to death. My only regret is that the English version of the book does not include an index (Phoenix book published by the university of Chicago press - translation by Stuart Gilbert).

Should not be missed!

Excellent book. You don't have to agree with all what is said there, but it can make you think differently. One of the books where if you do not read between the lines, you are loosing a lot of the content. The story is secondary. And definitely, this is not the book you would read or even want to read in one day.

Overall, it's an extraordinary accomplishment. Together with Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra, one of the best books out there.

About the Author
Letizia Panizza is a research fellow in the Department of Italian at Royal Holloway, University of London. She is the editor of Women in Italian Renaissance Culture and Society and coeditor of A History of Women's Writing in Italy. She also wrote the introduction to Lucrezia Marinella's The Nobility and Excellence of Women and the Defects and Vices of Men, published by the University of Chicago Press.

She speaks whereof she knows

Arcangela Tarabotti, shunted by her father at a young age into the cloister because she was one of six daughters, was lame (incidentally as was her father) and considered unmarriageable, speaks from first-hand experience and a certain fury and rage, holding nothing back. She tells of the many girls sent without any recourse of their own to what amounts to a lifetime of incarceration that holds no relief or release for them.

She blames the patriarchal system, which is firmly upheld by the church, and the family reasons for maintaining their wealth and saving dower money for the sons of the family. She had two brothers but six sisters, only two of whom were not placed in nunneries. She also blames families, fathers particularly, for not providing any education for their daughters, or at best an indifferent education directed by people not fit to teach. This kept women in their place, ignorant, and powerless.

She does not quibble with those young women who enter the cloister with a true vocation and out of desire to be brides of Christ, but she does condemn fathers who dump their unwanted daughters, their superfluous daughters, their illegitimate daughters, and even guardians who consign their females wards to the cloister in order to control their inheritance should they have any.

She admits to having no great facility with Latin, but it is obvious that she is well-read in translation and has an exceptionally good mind, using her education, mainly hard-sought and self-taught, to a fine degree in making her point. She takes on writers of the literary circle, the Incogniti, and handles them with aplomb and wisdom. She does have an axe to grind, and she makes no excuse for it.

I do question just how the Italian system works when giving daughters to the cloister. In England it was expected that the wealthy families granted the convent/church a "dower" when delivering a daughter into holy orders. I have not determined this as yet, but it is a concern, I think, that needs to be addressed, just to have things straight.

So wrote the sixteenth-century Spanish humanist Juan Luis Vives in a famous work dedicated to Henry VIII's daughter, Princess Mary, but intended for a wider audience interested in the education of women.

Praised by Erasmus and Thomas More, Vives advocated education for all women, regardless of social class and ability. From childhood through adolescence to marriage and widowhood, this manual offers practical advice as well as philosophical meditation and was recognized soon after publication in 1524 as the most authoritative pronouncement on the universal education of women. Arguing that women were intellectually equal if not superior to men, Vives stressed intellectual companionship in marriage over procreation, and moved beyond the private sphere to show how women's progress was essential for the good of society and state.

In The Fear of Barbarians, the celebrated intellectual Tzvetan Todorov offers a corrective: a reasoned and often highly personal analysis of the problem, rooted in Enlightenment values yet open to the claims of cultural difference. Drawing on history, anthropology, and politics, and bringing to bear examples ranging from the murder of Theo van Gogh to the French ban on headscarves, Todorov argues that the West must overcome its fear of Islam if it is to avoid betraying the values it claims to protect. True freedom, Todorov explains, requires us to strike a delicate balance between protecting and imposing cultural values, acknowledging the primacy of the law, and yet strenuously protecting minority views that do not interfere with its aims. Adding force to Todorov's arguments is his own experience as a native of communist Bulgaria: his admiration of French civic identity—and Western freedom—is vigorous but non-nativist, an inclusive vision whose very flexibility is its core strength.

Tzvetan Todorov is a historian and political essayist and the author of many books, including Conquest of America: The Question of the Other and, most recently, The Defense of the Enlightenment. Andrew Brown has translated numerous books from French, including Todorov’s The New World Disorder.
