An excellent primer

Alfred North Whitehead, in his magnum opus 'Process and Reality', set forth a philosophical framework that has inspired the subsequent generation of theologians to look towards a new system of metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, and theological reality. One of the problems with 'Process and Reality', however, is that it is not a very accessible text to most people, even to most theologians. Donald Sherburne has done great service to legions of pastors, students, and interested lay persons by simplifying and reorganising the text of 'Process and Reality' into a more logical and easier-to-read text.
Sherburne's introduction speaks of the lack of information available on Whitehead - since his death in 1947, his influence has been confined to philosophy and theology, and then only at graduate-student and higher levels. This has not changed, for the most part, in the decades since the first publication of Sherburne's text, but it is beginning to make itself felt in various levels through grassroots 'evangelism' of process thought principles.
The text itself is organised to allow primary emphasis on Whitehead's own writing from 'Process and Reality', followed closely in the chapters by paragraphs of explanation and commentary by Sherburne (these are presented in an italicised typeface, making the distinction between Whitehead's words and the commentary very clear).
The rearrangement of topics follows more closely what a typical student of philosophy might expect to find in any other philosophy text. Like logic or geometry (Whitehead was a protégé of Bertrand Russell of Principia Mathematica fame), it begins with basic principles and concepts. For Whitehead, this is the actual entity and the process itself. From this, the text explores how things are what they are, and how we can come to know them.
How things are constituted involved their formative elements; for Whitehead, these consist of God, creativity, and the pure potentiality inherent in the universe. With these in mind, the process of concrescence is presented.
Sherburne then presents ideas of the macrocosmic and nexus, and the requirements and limitations on perception. This leads to a discussion of Whitehead versus other philosophers, many of whom will be far more familiar to the readers. Descartes, Hume, Locke, Kant, and the methods of science (through a lens of Newton and Plato first, then further developed) are explored.
The seventh chapter, on God and the World, is perhaps the most interesting and useful to theologians. God's primordial and consequent natures are explored. Whitehead uses the process ideas set forth earlier to look at the concept of immortality, in particular, the love of God for the world, and the process by which all of reality can be redeemed and held complete in the mind of God.
Sherburne states that the Appendix - In Defense of Speculative Philosophy - can be read first or last in the text; Sherburne actually recommends both, so that Whitehead's Defense can serve both as a setting and a conclusion to this text. Philosophy, particularly metaphysics and the more speculative sorts of philosophy, has been under critical attack over the past few generations. Whitehead's arguments for the value of philosophy, particularly when it relates to other intellectual disciplines (as opposed to merely trying to explain things away) are worth considering by the philosopher, scientist, historian, theologian, political scientist, and followers of many other disciplines.
There is a useful glossary of terms that I return to time and again. These are good definitions, succinctly stated, deriving from the text of 'Process and Reality'.
Sherburne, a professor of philosophy at Vanderbilt, is also one of the editors who produced the corrected version of Whitehead's primary text, 'Process and Reality'. This book can serve as an excellent preliminary study prior to going on to 'Process and Reality' itself, but I would advise those seriously interested in Whitehead and process thought to continue on toward that text.

Must have for Process and Reality

I tried to wade though Whitehead's Process and Reality unarmed several times and was routed by hoards of "actual entities", "eternal objects" and other beasts. Finally, fortified by Sherburne, I made it. And you can too, but don't think the going is easy even with Sherburne at your side.
He does a good job of reorganizing the text so that the concepts build in a more linear fashion, he also provides some insightful introductions to his chapters. Still, I give the book only a 4, because it's still hard to get the big picture from the onslaught of details.

Exceptional

Exceptionally clear editing (piecing together and reorganizing) of the original Whitehead text. Sherburne has pieced together many excerpts from different parts of the Whtiehead text in a very seamless way (indicating in the appendix where all the pieces come from in the original text) to create a new and clearer work of Whitehead's metaphysics. Together with a glossary (indispensible) and Sherburne's own running commentary in the main body of the text (in italics) this "Key" is essential to understanding Whitehead's philosophy as expressed in "Process and Reality". There are also very clear diagrams added by Sherburne not appearing in the original text which are also essential. If you want an introduction to this philosophy you really don't need the original text of Whitehead at all; this Key is sufficient at least for a start. Leclerc's work on Whitehead's metaphysics would be another aid to understanding as well. After reading and studying this "Key" I came away thinking "so that's what Whitehead was saying and what he meant, so why couldn't he say it" and yet he does say it, since Sherburne has only re-edited Whitehead's own words and rearrangeed the pieces to make greater sense of the whole. Fine synthetic job and essential in understanding Whitehead's anti-materialistic metaphysics of "Becoming and Flux".

From a Musician's Perspective

In my search to learn as much as I can about the people who create the Andean music that stirs my soul, I am highly impressed with Thomas Turino's research. For a musician like myself, who seeks to perform Andean music with a deep understanding of the culture, this book is a precious jewel. Turino's respect of the people and his detailed descriptions of the process of composition and performance are immensely helpful. I feel like I am sitting in the earthen-floored house together with him and the musicians of Tarkas de Putina as they softly play their instruments in the dim light of a flame, composing fiesta music by wordless consensus all through the night fueled by coca and alcohol.
Furthermore he reports with an equally intimate and scholarly first-person account on changes that migration (between rural Aymara-speaking Conimo on the Northern shore of Lake Titicaca and urban Lima) cause to the music and the culture.

Turino's scholarship is impeccable, but Turning Away From Silence is one of the rare ethnomusicological works that is both as insightful and as exquisitely written as John Blacking's How Musical Is Man? Turino's insights into the culture vs virtuosity issue confronting campesinos who have moved into the pueblos jovenes that have cropped up in the cities are heartbreaking. Wonderfully argued and beautifully written.

Not so fast, says Georgetown University professor Suzanna Danuta Walters, whose readable, witty study tracks the murky relationship between visibility and political progress. In her search for examples, Walters casts a wide net that brings up everything from the hatemongering of Dr. Laura, to gay marriage initiatives, to gay-targeted Budweiser and IKEA ads. She focuses in particular on two pivotal events of the 1990s: the coming out of Ellen DeGeneres and the murder of Matthew Shepard, arguing that "these two events illustrate the confusing and often incomprehensible tenor of the times. We rejoice at breaking down one barrier only to be faced, again, with the ugliness and brutality of another." You win some, you lose some, in other words. This comprehensive survey of gay and lesbian visibility in popular culture offers a whirlwind of facts, figures and documentation of gay representations. Acknowledging television's past e.g., Mike Wallace's 1967 CBS report reconfirming many homophobic stereotypes Walters concentrates on post-AIDS entertainment in which gay characters and themes appear everywhere from HBO's Oz to The Drew Carey Show to that bastion of backlash, Ally McBeal. A double edge runs through Walters's countless examples: does this visibility indicate acceptance, or does "gay chic" just characterize a profitable niche market? Moreover, are these trends destructive? An associate professor of sociology and director of women's studies at Georgetown, Walters (Material) quotes activist and writer Sarah Schulman as criticizing "the creation of a false public homosexuality that is palatable and containable and... not authentic." Refreshing Viewpoint & Highly Recommended!

This is one of the most thorough and thought-provoking books I have ever read. I couldn't put it down and have in fact read it more than once. It offers a current and readable analysis of the contradiction between gay visibility in America and the growing trend of such Anti-gay initiatives as the Defense of Marriage Act. It was very enjoyable to read and very insightful.

Author Suzanna Danuta Walters chronciles the history of gay visibility in America excellently in this book! Looking at it from a variety of perspectives: Cinema, Television, Advertising (Marketing)and her own personal accounts of being a lesbian parent. While the debate rages on over assimilation, equal rights and the unigueness of gay culture, I feel that the author has done an excellent job bringing to light valid arguements while chronciling the history of how far we have come as a culture and how much furhter we have to go. It never ends and we are fooling arourselves to think that it does.
It sometime shocks and angers me how the gay community refuses to support such good work as this. Ignorance in anytything is not bliss!
Anyone interested in any type of gay studies should read this book. The author puts together tons of research into a rich and well developed text.

Readable, interesting, engaging

"All the Rage" presents a readable and engaging overview of
gay and lesbian cultural visibility in recent years, with
emphasis on the growing representation in television. The
book takes a middle-of-the-road view that cultural visibility,
while good, does not necessarily imply progress in achieving
political rights (and, in fact, growing cultural visibility
for gays and lesbians has coincided with increasing efforts
to impede progress toward gay rights). The book offers a
number of insights through detailed treatments of particular
TV shows, advertisements, etc., with loving attention. I
thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and I learned a lot on
the ride.

This future world history is presented as the reminiscences of a 115-year old historian, supposedly transcribed from a "holofilm" bequeathed to his granddaughter in the year 2200. Wagar is not a science fiction writer, although he uses the genre's methods. In a highly readable style he projects plausible societal futures based upon current trends. He outlines the fall of world capitalism in book one and forecasts shortages of natural resources and a nuclear catastrophe. In book two he describes the establishment of a socialist world government, and in book three tells how a decentralized utopian world community comes about. Since Arthur C. Clarke's July 20, 2019 ( LJ 1/87) and other books have focused more on technological changes in the immediate future, Wagar's sociological speculations constitute an important addition to the field of future studies. Recommended for most libraries.

Not meant to be a prediction

Wagar's book is a look back from the dawn of the 23rd century at the history of the world over the previous 200 years. While Wagar makes some actual predictions about scientific progress that are intriguing and somewhat realistic -- human life extended to about 150 years, for instance, and genetic improvements that essentially create a new species of genius children -- he is primarily using this framework to explore different large-scale economic systems.

The first part of the book shows modern international capitalism run amok, to an exaggerated conclusion where a small set of gargantuan monopolies have eclipsed governments and control the lives of workers. This is succeeded by a global socialist state that revives the environment and creates new opportunities for education and artistic exploration, but which eventually collapses under the weight of its own bureaucracy and unintended suppression of individualism. The third shows the world in reset, with new small nations emerging, free to choose their own ideological paths.

Some of the ideas are fantastical, some simplistic, but this is a fun read that casts some light on differing economic ideologies.

Enjoyable on many levels, it gets you thinking for months

ASHOTF is one of the best books I have ever read, and the most influential (Structure of Scientific Revolutions and A History of the Balkans are the others), it doesn't leave you.
Enjoyably at the end of every section, there are personal notes from "ancestors" of the authors. Also included are some major political characters from obscurity to leadership, as well as the define and fall of nations. ASHOTF manages to perfectly meld a family history, a history of nations, and a discussion on philosophy while seeming to be neither. It makes you see everybody, from your parents to Jefferson, Marx, and Mao, in a new light.

uncreative rehash of 100 years of ill conceived utopias

First let me say that I did not dislike this book because it presented a leftist utopia: I *loved* the novel _Ecotopia_, because it was genuinely different; something new under the sun.
A Short History of the Future, on the other hand, was a tired rehash of every leftist utopian scheme I've ever seen, and even lifted Chomskian phrases and Marxist rhetoric and just pasted it in. It's fine to have a well thought out leftist vision of the future, it's pathetic and lazy to have a recycled cut-and-paste vision of the future, no matter what the political viewpt.
In the author's future history, capitalism betrays itself by concentrating wealth ever more densely in the hands of just a few. The Evil Capitalist Overlords, in an updated version of Marx, use up their middle manager in a white-collar hell of forced relocations, long trips, etc. Happilly, the Soviet Union persists into the middle of the 21st century (yes, the self-described "futurist" author, writing in 1988, missed the fall of the USSR less than two yrs in the future) and provides an alternative. From the thesis and antithesis of capitalism (you can tell this was written by an academic) comes a vaunted Third Way (wow, this is *really* new stuff; I haven't seen such ideas since...well, any progressive newspaper from the 1920s...). The third way has class conciousness merged with ecological conciousness (wow! amazing! Who could imagine such a thing in 1988...besides, say, the German Green party?). Child raising is gradually passed off to professionals, and marriage becomes delegitimized and illegal.
Oh, to make this only slightly disguised academic manifesto really sad, you have to know that the founder of the Third Way political group was a graduate student in the early 21st century.
The book has a lot of great reviews on the back cover, but careful reading shows that most of them come from friends and associates of the author: log-rolling at its finest.
This book is almost unreadable.
Save your money.

Student;'s Guide for Writing College Papers

I was disappointed with this book for several reasons:
1) It was written pre-video, pre-internet; therefore, many aspects of incorporating sources into class papers lack any directives by Turabian.

2) While sharing the "what not to do's", this book lacked many "to do's". For example, in the footnoting section, she indicated when not to use Ibid., but the book lacks specific direction on what to do.

3) Information is not easily accessible for specific points...lots of searching to find where the information is located in the book.

While eventually you get to the information you need, I found myself using my "best guess" in writing my papers and hoping for the best. I had hoped that this book would build my confidence BEFORE I submit my student work. Unfortunately, my university using the Turabian method!

In it's time this was probably THE reference for writing term papers, but with the passing of time, it has become dated. With information on such things as footnotes, it is simply not up-to-date with the styles currently in use at most colleges. Probably manuals such as the Beacon Handbook or the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers would be better reference choices.

Outdated, but great for teaching outlining

Yes, this book is outdated for citing internet resources, etc. However if you need to understand how to put together and outline, this book has an excellent section with an example of an actual outline. This is something that I have found to be missing from current handbooks and it has proved very valuable to me.

Over the centuries, the idea of the self has both fascinated and confounded philosophers. From the ancient Greeks, who problematized issues of identity and self-awareness, to Locke and Hume, who popularized minimalist views of the self, to the efforts of postmodernists in our time to decenter the human subject altogether, the idea that there is something called a self has always been in steady decline. But for Richard Sorabji, this negation of the self is dispiriting. In Self, he sets out to recover the rich variety of positive accounts of the self from Antiquity right up to the present, while offering his own inspiring view of what precisely the self might be.

Drawing on Eastern religion, classical Antiquity, and Western philosophy, Sorabji proceeds to tackle a number of thematic debates that have preoccupied philosophers over the ages, including the concept of the self, its sameness and mutability, the idea of the resurrection of the body and spirit, and the fear of death. According to Sorabji, the self is not an undetectable soul or ego, but an embodied individual whose existence is plain to see. It is also neither a linguistic creation nor a psychological fiction, but something that owns both a consciousness and a body.

            Ultimately, Sorabji argues, the demise of a positive idea of the self stems from much older and more pervasive problems of identity than we realize. Through an astute reading of this tradition, he helps us come to terms with our uneasiness about the subject in an account that will be at the forefront of philosophical debates for years to come.

Richard Sorabji is emeritus professor of ancient philosophy at King’s College London and a fellow of Wolfson College, University of Oxford. Besides coediting The Ethics of War: Shared Problems in Different Traditions, and editing seventy volumes so far of The Ancient Commentators on Aristotle, he is the author of Matter, Space and Motion; Animal Minds and Human Morals; Emotion and Peace of Mind; Aristotle on Memory; Necessity, Cause and Blame; and Time, Creation and the Continuum, the last three of which are also published by the University of Chicago Press.

It's about you

In this book Richard Sorabji has written a review of philosophical ideas of the self. He includes ideas from the Ancient World and commentaries on them from the present day. Some Ancient Christian and Buddhist and Hindu ideas are included.

The original texts can be unwieldy, but Sorabji deftly navigates the literature, and presents the concepts in a clear way.

For a treatment of how modern brain science can help explain the nature of the self, see "Self Comes to Mind: Constructing the Conscious Brain" by Antonio Damasio.

The book succeeds because its topic is of tremendous interest to everyone. You are the topic, and Sorabj deeply investigates you and elaborates the parts that make you you.

The content of the book itself, like all of Sorabji's works, deserve 5+ stars. The rating is brought down by the poor format of the Kindle edition.

The primary problem is the handling of footnotes. Each footnote is a hyperlink, which jumps to a page at the end of the book. But there is no link there to take you back to your spot in the text. On the Kindle, that's not a big deal, you just hit the "back" button. But on the Fire, there is no easy way to get back to where you were; when reading on my Fire, I had to (try and) remember to drop a bookmark before jumping to a note.

That would be manageable; but what eventually made me return the kindle book was when I discovered that some footnotes had not been formatted as hyperlinks in the text, so there was really no way to get to the footnote text at all! That's a serious problem for an academic book; I'll get the print edition instead.

This isn't really so hard, but publishers have to sort this out, particularly for academic texts. If your text has footnotes, FORMAT THEM PROPERLY. By which I mean, that when you read the text on the Kindle, it pops up a mini-window with footnote text (which, on the Fire, is interpreted as a jump to the correct note, which always has a return link on it). A press like Chicago should be able to manage this!

In the last ten years, a new school of sociology has grown up that sees science as not only relativistic but as a purely human construct; that ties scientists' findings about "nature" to their standing in the cultural and political milieu of which they are a part. Steven Shapin adds to this revisionist literature with a fascinating, paradoxical book that at once questions our notions of the scientific revolution of the last century and deepens our understanding of it. Shapin examines four themes in the history of modern science: mechanism (the idea of nature as a machine); objectivism; methodology and impartiality; and altruism (the idea that science can better the lot of mankind). He does so in three deft, incisive sections: "What Was Known?"; "How Was It Known?"; and "What Was the Knowledge For?" This excellent study, written for the layman, explains how the scientists' world shaped their knowledge of the natural world.

"There was no such thing as the Scientific Revolution, and this is a book about it," says Shapin, a professor of sociology at U.C., San Diego in his introduction, "There was, rather, a diverse array of cultural practices aimed at understanding explaining, and controlling the natural world." Shapin's treatise on the currents that engendered modern science is a combination of history and philosophy of science for the interested and educated layperson, and it is indeed considerably more readable than many of the other philosophy of science books currently available. Several puzzling aspects of the writings of 16th- and 17th-century scientists are put into new perspective in his section titled: "Science as Religion's Handmaid." There are three basic sections of the book: "What Was Known?" covers major differences between the "new knowledge" of the scientific revolution and received wisdom of the ancients. "How Was It Known?" covers sources of authority (e.g., books or experience) and some of the experimental groundwork of major players such as Boyle and Galileo. And "What Was The Knowledge For?" explores the interactions of the new science with the political, religious and cultural dimensions of the European society in which it was embedded. This slim book would have benefited from a deeper consideration of the rivalry between English and Continental science (and scientists) and the relationship of the new science to the design and production of war machines. But Shapin does help the reader understand the direct intellectual link between that time and our own. Illustrations, all taken from original sources, add a nice touch.

Most history texts teach that the "birth" of modern science occurred between Copernicus in the mid-16th century and Newton in the late 17th century. Shapin (social science, Univ. of California, San Diego) synthesizes a broad collection of scholarship in concluding that what happened during that period was profound but hardly so jarring and abrupt as to be called a "scientific revolution." Rather, the development of a new, naturalistic philosophy was part of a continuous process with antecedents in the Middle Ages, one that still affects how we think about the world today. The author focuses in particular on some of the key figures of the era?Bacon, Descartes, Galileo, and Newton, for example?in showing how their attitudes toward science manifested these values. The Scientific Revolution changed how we see the world

I am amazed by the review written by the reader from Sydney. This book does not pretend to give a chronological narrative of who did what when in the making of modern science. There are many books that do that job. Instead, Shapin is interested in what difference the Scientific Revolution made to how people at the time, and how we, think about the natural world. The major changes may have been the new idea that nature could be investigated and understood, not merely regarded with awe and fear; that careful, repeatable experiments could yield information about how nature works; and that this new approach to nature changed how human beings regarded our relation to the natural world and our place in it. If nature is something that we can explore and understand, then we have a new power; we are no longer on a par with the natural world, because we can see into it. The ways in which knowledge is acquired, or made, and why it matters that we pursue and develop this knowledge are part of Shapin's central theme. These are not small questions, and to my mind they are addressed elegantly in this short but very substantial book.

A thoughtful examination of science history.

Shapin opens his 'Scientific Revolution' with the paradoxical statement, "there was no such thing as the Scientific Revolution, and this is a book about it." Shapin proceeds to use the next 150 or so pages to explain himself. The book is firmly structured in three sections, addressing the what, how, and why of scientific knowledge in the seventeenth century; the contents of each section are similarly well-structured, but seem to discuss more than the simple titles suggest. Examining the very foundations of scientific thought and the manner in which the modern distinction between legitimate science and voodoo came about, Shapin uses the Scientific Revolution as a venue for introducing his and other scholars' views on both the essential nature of modern science and the way in which ideas evolve. Explanatory notes where appropriate make the reading accessible to those unfamiliar with science history or philosophy.

Great book with a lot of unique insight

I have studied science and the history of science for a long time. I taught experimental methodology at Emory University also. This book is a must-read for it's unique insights into the culture and mindset of the times when science arose and how it related to the politics of the era (revolutions, protestant reformation, and freedom etc.). I enjoyed how the author shows the relationship of religious ideas of the time to science -- they were reading the "other holy book" or "the book of nature" which was available for all to read.

An especially interesting aspect of this book for me was that at the end of it he shows that practical ideas or purposes were not the motive for the research that was done, and that much of the best practical applications of the research which was done around the 16-1700's did not come into play until much later -- hundreds of years later in many instances. The abstract pursuit of truth about the world, the reading of "the other holy book" was the thing. (I emphasize this aspect of science in my own book also)The Textbook of the Universe: The Genetic Ascent to God.

It also brings to light other important differences with other cultures -- such as why science never took off in asia before western ideas invaded over there. Oriental philosophy and thinking tends to be resolutely practical to the point that it could be considered a form of blindness for them. Their history of philosophy is filled with practical conundrums, not abstract theories of universal truths. They never had any individualistic freedom movements either. That difference is an extremely important insight into the western impetus to science. We did it naturally, and it was originally a fundamentally religious pursuit for us. The other main insight in this book is that our urges for freedom and individualism were bound up inextricably with our desire to read the "book of nature". This is the core of western thinking in general which gave rise to science. It defines us. I can think of no greater insight to the nature of western European thinking than this. Science, freedom, individualism, and our natural ideas of religion -- they go together.

I have read no other book that illustrates and elucidates this supremely important point and foundation of science better than this one little book. It is small, but it is a powerhouse. Other than that, it is a great read, hard to put down. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the scientific revolution.

The complexities of India

This book is an example in its genre, it shows the complexities of the decisions concerning ‎modernity in India. The traditional (temple) dancers who were masters of their own fate ‎became stigmatized through English ethics digested by Gandhi and other nationalists‏.‏‎ A ‎bold, erudite and frank book.

Great book on classical dance in India

Great book, can recommend it to anybody interested in classical Indian dance. It is important we know more about its history and this book is very useful for that. Keep up the good work, Mr. Soneji!
