Direct Action: Radical Pacifism from the Union Eight to the Chicago Seven, by James Tracy

Direct Action tells the story of how a small group of "radical pacifists"—nonviolent activists such as David Dellinger, Staughton Lynd, A.J. Muste, and Bayard Rustin—played a major role in the rebirth of American radicalism and social protest in the 1950s and 1960s. Coming together in the camps and prisons where conscientious objectors were placed during World War II, radical pacifists developed an experimental protest style that emphasized media-savvy, symbolic confrontation with institutions deemed oppressive. Due to their tactical commitment to nonviolent direct action, they became the principal interpreters of Gandhism on the American Left, and indelibly stamped postwar America with their methods and ethos. Genealogies of the Civil Rights, antiwar, and antinuclear movements in this period are incomplete without understanding the history of radical pacifism.

Taking us through the Vietnam war protests, this detailed treatment of radical pacifism reveals the strengths and limitations of American individualism in the modern era.

Amazon.com Review
In his first book, James Tracy explores the evolution and history of radical pacifism, the nonviolent protest method that peaked in the United States during the 1960s. Tracy tells the little-known story of the Union Eight, a group of students at the Union Theological Seminary who refused to enter the draft for World War II in 1940. Their position represented a turning point for the Left, a move from communism and socialism toward civil disobedience based in religious faith and individual action; Tracy follows the influence of this transition through the 1940s, '50s, and '60s. His is a subject of history seldom mentioned or even understood, yet one that is vital to the history of the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 1960s.

Review
... too brief to present a full analysis of radical pacifism's history and influence. Still, it is perceptive about a small slice of our recent past, and it reminds us that even America's dissenting traditions tend to be grounded in the nation's pervasive individualistic culture. -- The New York Times Book Review, Nick Salvatore

About the Author
James Tracy is headmaster at Cushing Academy in Ashbunham, MA. He is editor of Why Change? What Works? The NAIS Guide to Change Management and A Guidebook to the NAIS Principles of Good Practice, as well as coeditor of Christmas Unwrapped: Consumerism, Christ, and Culture.

If you think you know history, read it
By Dean Blobaum
Before I read this book I associated the philosophy and protest techniques of pacifism with the 1950s civil rights movement and anti-war protests of the 1960s. Among the very useful things this book does is to move that clock back about ten or fifteen years. When was the first organized sit-in to desegregate a restaurant? 1943, in Chicago. When did whites and blacks ride together to integrate interstate busing? 1947, with the Journey of Reconciliation. Mass draft card burning? 1947, New York City. Radical activists giving up on imminent political revolution and moving to rural communes? That would be 1952.

The book traces the activities of a small but influential group of men and women, many of whom began their radical journey as a conscientious objector to military service in WW2. This is the "greatest generation" that doesn't get talked about: those who wanted to save America from its own militarism, who objected to the draft, who were horrified by the use of atomic weapons, who perceived injustice and put their bodies on the line to stop it.

It's a short book, so in-depth histories of individuals, or acts of protest, or organizations are not the point of the book. Rather the author traces the influence of these radical pacifists from the 1940s into the upheavals of the 50s and 60s. He makes the very interesting argument that the lonely righteousness of these WW2 objectors would, twenty years later, make it difficult for the protest organizations they influenced to forge a mass movement.

Essential '60s Text
By A Customer
This extensively researched book shows the birth of a new breed of passive resistance in this country, in front of the backdrop of the 1960s and earlier. An essential text for anyone interested in the 1960s. (Also a great research paper resource . . .)

Protest and promise
By Paulrbuzz
Insightful work on the evolution of the modern protest movement that shepherded in the later half of the twentieth century and continues to influence the politics of today. We can only hope in this politically divisive time that such women and men of strength and conviction still walk among us.

Whether a Christian Woman Should Be Educated and Other Writings from Her Intellectual Circle (The Other Voice in Early Modern Europe)By

Advocate and exemplar of women's education, female of aristocratic birth and modest demeanor, Anna Maria van Schurman (1607-1678) was one of Reformation Europe's most renowned writers defending women's intelligence. From her early teens, Schurman garnered recognition and admiration for her accomplishments in languages, philosophy, poetry, and painting. As an adult she actively engaged in written correspondence and debate with Europe's leading intellectuals. Nevertheless, Schurman refused to regard herself as an anomaly among women. A supporter of the female sex, she argues that the same rigorous education that shaped her should be made available to all Christian daughters of the aristocracy.

Gathered here in meticulous translation are Anna Maria van Schurman's defense of women's education, her letters to other learned women, and her own account of her early life, as well as responses to her work from male contemporaries, and rare writings by Schurman's mentor, Voetius. This volume will interest the general reader as well as students of women's, religious, and social history.

Student's Guide to Writing College Papers: Fourth Edition (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing), by Kate L. Turabian

High school students, two-year college students, and university students all need to know how to write a well-reasoned, coherent research paper—and for decades Kate Turabian’s Student’s Guide to Writing College Papers has helped them to develop this critical skill. In the new fourth edition of Turabian’s popular guide, the team behind Chicago’s widely respected The Craft of Research has reconceived and renewed this classic for today’s generation. Designed for less advanced writers than Turabian’s Manual of Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, Seventh Edition, Gregory G. Colomb and Joseph M. Williams here introduce students to the art of defining a topic, doing high-quality research with limited resources, and writing an engaging and solid college paper.

The Student’s Guide is organized into three sections that lead students through the process of developing and revising a paper. Part 1, "Writing Your Paper," guides students through the research process with discussions of choosing and developing a topic, validating sources, planning arguments, writing drafts, avoiding plagiarism, and presenting evidence in tables and figures. Part 2, "Citing Sources," begins with a succinct introduction to why citation is important and includes sections on the three major styles students might encounter in their work—Chicago, MLA, and APA—all with full coverage of electronic source citation. Part 3, "Style," covers all matters of style important to writers of college papers, from punctuation to spelling to presenting titles, names, and numbers.

From Booklist
Here is the latest edition of a guide that “repurposes the ideas, principles, and practical wisdom” found in The Craft of Research (3rd ed., 2008) and A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (7th ed., 2007). The editors have simplified and updated many of the ideas and principles for beginning college students. Starting with an introduction (“Why Research?”), the book is divided into three parts. Part 1 (“Writing Your Paper”) explains the research process, finding a question, planning an argument, taking notes, preventing plagiarism, and writing and then revising a draft. Part 2 (“Citing Sources”) covers the need to cite sources and describes the three most popular citation styles in detail, and Part 3 (“Style”) includes the usual rules for spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. Three appendixes include a glossary of grammatical terms, specific tips on formatting a paper, and resources for research and writing. An excellent index provides page numbers instead of the more cumbersome outline numerals. Blue boxes highlight important or helpful tips (“Verbs for Introducing a Quotation or Paraphrase”; “Write for Target Readers, Not Your Teacher”). Excellent up-to-date analogies and specific examples also make this very user-friendly. The newest MLA style is used (no URLs for material cited from the Web). However, advice about using recordable CDs (not flash drives) when using a public computer already seems outdated. Librarians will love reading that the purpose of learning to research is “finding information we can trust” and students should “watch out for Wikipedia.” Instructors may appreciate online suggestions at http://www.turabian.org/turabian_instructor_guide.pdf. This guide should be in every high-school, college, and public library. --Susan Gooden

Love it!
By Juwan Johnson
I originally bought this book by accident because I thought my professor said that it was the required text. No later than 30 seconds after she said it I logged on and purchased it during her class only to find out that it was not required but recommended. I had it by my side when writing my first essay of the semester and will continue to use it throughout the rest of my college career.

The Selected Poetry and Prose of Vittorio Sereni: A Bilingual Edition, by Vittorio Sereni

One of the most important Italian poets of the last century, Vittorio Sereni (1913–83) wrote with a historical awareness unlike that of any of his contemporaries. A poet of both personal and political responsibility, his work sensitively explores life   under fascism, military defeat and imprisonment, and the resurgence of extreme right-wing politics, as well as the roles played by love and friendship in the survival of humanity. The first substantial translation of Sereni’s oeuvre published anywhere in the world, The Selected Poetry and Prose of Vittorio Sereni is a unique guide to this twentieth-century poet. A bilingual edition, reissued in paperback for the poet’s centenary, it collects Sereni’s poems, criticism, and short fiction with a full chronology, commentary, bibliography, and learned introduction by British poet and scholar Peter Robinson.

Review
"For the first time in English, we have an authorised translation which gives due consideration to his corpus, selecting from among his four collections the most representative poems and from his prose those pieces which extend the poetry's themes and concerns. Together, they present a complex portrait, reflective of the poet's search for a way of being in the world, a mode of existence and of writing which would be an appropriate response to the weight of a personal experience intertwined with that of his country and Europe in the twentieth century. "—Maria-Daniella Dick, PN Review (Maria-Daniella Dick, PN Review)

"Many excellent Italian poets of the 20th century are less well known to English-speaking readers than they should be, and Sereni has long been one of the most egregious cases of undeserved neglect. This beautifully produced bilingual edition of his poems and prose should do much to correct this long standing critical oversight. Robinson and Perryman are experienced translators of Italian poetry, and they worked closely with Sereni and his heirs over many years to produce renderings of his work that do justice to its emotional subtlety and finely discriminated linguistic coloration....A sensitive introduction by Robinson (himself a poet), a chronology of Sereni's life, thorough annotation of texts, and a comprehensive bibliography complete the volume, which will be a boon to those interested in Italian and comparative literature and modern poetry. Highly recommended." (Choice 2007-08-01)

"Translations of [Sereni] have tended to be sporadic and difficult to come by. The University of Chicago Press has now produced lavish hardback anthologies...with generous portions, in English and Italian, of all of the many collections of verse, plus (in English only) selections from their prose writings.... Sereni deserve[s] to be much better known outside Italy...the translations are always serviceable and at times of high quality." (Peter Hainsworth Times Literary Supplement 2008-01-04)

"[Sereni] is an extraordinary evoker of both on-the-spot experience and the enduring presence of the past in memory. His stature as a major European war poet should grow rapidly with this volume. . . . Perryman and Robinson translate closely and accurately, and this monumental bilingual edition will be invaluable to students of Sereni." (John Taylor Yale Review)

The People's Peking Man: Popular Science and Human Identity in Twentieth-Century China, by Sigrid Schmalzer

In the 1920s an international team of scientists and miners unearthed the richest evidence of human evolution the world had ever seen: Peking Man. After the communist revolution of 1949, Peking Man became a prominent figure in the movement to bring science to the people. In a new state with twin goals of crushing “superstition” and establishing a socialist society, the story of human evolution was the first lesson in Marxist philosophy offered to the masses. At the same time, even Mao’s populist commitment to mass participation in science failed to account for the power of popular culture—represented most strikingly in legends about the Bigfoot-like Wild Man—to reshape ideas about human nature.
The People’s Peking Man is a skilled social history of twentieth-century Chinese paleoanthropology and a compelling cultural—and at times comparative—history of assumptions and debates about what it means to be human. By focusing on issues that push against the boundaries of science and politics, The People’s Peking Man offers an innovative approach to modern Chinese history and the history of science.

Review
“In this ambitious study of the introduction of Darwinian thought to China, Schmalzer aims to change the way historians of science and Sinologists both look at their disciplines. She demonstrates that knowledge of science dissemination practices is necessary for understanding larger questions of modernity and cultural transformation in China. At the same time, by placing Chinese science in its unique political and cultural context, she challenges the historian’s perception of how the popularization process operates. In the course of telling the story of paleoanthroplogy against the backdrop of the turbulent path of twentieth-century Chinese history, Schmalzer successfully deals with a series of important issues, such as the state’s use of popularization to undermine superstition and embrace socialism, the nationalist symbolism surrounding the ‘Peking Man,’ and the tensions between top-down science dissemination and bottom-up mass science.”

(Bernard Lightman, York University)

“A passionately argued story of human identity, popular science, and politics in twentieth-century China, delightfully out of step with our cynical times and certain to captivate even the most skeptical reader. Schmalzer’s work combines intellectual curiosity mentored by the imagination with serious scholarship firmly grounded in the empirical.”

(Michael Schoenhals, Lund University)

“This wonderfully original book takes a seemingly arcane topic—paleoanthropology and the changing political and cultural meanings of Peking Man—and uses it to explore the changing political cultures of republican, Maoist, and post-Maoist China in a new and subtle way. The author ranges confidently across issues as diverse as evolutionary theory and the search for yetis, illuminating, as she goes, major issues concerning the relationship between science and politics, the relationship between academic elites and citizens who lack scientific knowledge, and the ways in which science is represented and visualized in popular culture. In a consistently thought-provoking fashion, she uses the Chinese case to grapple with fundamental questions concerning the democratic control of science in modern societies.”

(Steve Smith, University of Essex)

“This is one of the few books on science in twentieth-century China, a burgeoning area of research, and the first book on popular science in China. The People’s Peking Man unquestionably breaks new ground.” (Fa-ti Fan, State University of New York, Birmingham)

"A highly original book....Schmalzer's book finds a great deal to say about issues as diverse as the historical significance of Chinese fossil humans, the search for yetis (called yeren, or 'wild people' in China), changing concepts of human identity, and the conflict between top-down science dissemination and bottom-up mass participation in Chinese science. She also explores other diverse issues that include the connections among science, politics, religion and culture, and the relationship between professional scientists and the general public. Schmalzer presents all these topics in a lively, accessible and thought-provoking way." (Xu Xing Nature 2009-01-29)

"Peking Man, then, is a wonderfully charged focus for this absorbing study of ideas about popular science, evolution and human identity in 20th century China....an extraordinarily rich, perceptive and highly readable book, that takes in ideas about yeren (the Chinese yeti), the evolutionary link between labour and humanity, the government’s response to Falun Gong and much more."

(Mike Pitts British Archaeology 2009-03-01)

Africa as a Living Laboratory: Empire, Development, and the Problem of Scientific Knowledge, 1870-1950, by Helen Tilley

Tropical Africa was one of the last regions of the world to experience formal European colonialism, a process that coincided with the advent of a range of new scientific specialties and research methods. Africa as a Living Laboratory is a far-reaching study of the thorny relationship between imperialism and the role of scientific expertise—environmental, medical, racial, and anthropological—in the colonization of British Africa.

A key source for Helen Tilley’s analysis is the African Research Survey, a project undertaken in the 1930s to explore how modern science was being applied to African problems. This project both embraced and recommended an interdisciplinary approach to research on Africa that, Tilley argues, underscored the heterogeneity of African environments and the interrelations among the problems being studied. While the aim of British colonialists was unquestionably to transform and modernize Africa, their efforts, Tilley contends, were often unexpectedly subverted by scientific concerns with the local and vernacular. Meticulously researched and gracefully argued, Africa as a Living Laboratory transforms our understanding of imperial history, colonial development, and the role science played in both.

Review
"This is an ingenious book that will establish Helen Tilley as a considerable authority in the field. Tilley's unusually rich and sensitive exploration of primary materials and firm grounding in the existing literature will help students and scholars reorient their understanding of the crucial roles scientific agencies played both in imperial administration and economic development." (Simon Schaffer, University of Cambridge)"

From Publishers Weekly
Using conversational interviews with 88 white, middle-class, mostly middle-aged suburbanites from the San Jose area in 1980-1981, California sociology professor Swidler attempts to determine how people use cultural meanings in their everyday lives. While this is an extremely narrow group from which to draw any general conclusions, Swidler characterizes them as "not so much `typical' as `prototypical' Americans," who represent not what meanings their culture gives them, but how they apply those meanings. Perhaps anticipating critics who might question the contemporary value of remarks made 20 years ago, Swidler questionably asserts that all people from all times and places use cultural messages in the same ways, regardless of how those messages might vary in content. Among her insights are that "happy" people in "settled" times avoid examining cultural meanings or challenging them even if they don't actually believe them. Conversely, in "unsettled" times (adolescence, divorce, political unrest), people question the culture more actively, Swidler contends, to search for answers or solutions to issues, problems or unhappiness. Though this volume may appeal to a trade audience, it reads like a textbook, with citations within the text that interrupt the flow of the narrative. Unlike authors such as Deborah Tannen, who have made sociological concepts accessible and appealing to mainstream audiences, Swidler offers a dry, scholarly view of what might otherwise have been a fascinating topic.

Health and Welfare during Industrialization (National Bureau of Economic Research Project Report)From University of Chicago Press

In this unique anthology, Steckel and Floud coordinate ten essays that bring a new perspective to inquiry about standard of living in modern times. These papers are arranged for international comparison, and they individually examine evidence of health and welfare during and after industrialization in eight countries: the United States, Britain, Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Japan, and Australia.
The essays incorporate several indicators of quality of life, especially real per capita income and health, but also real wages, education, and inequality. And while the authors use traditional measures of health such as life expectancy and mortality rates, this volume stands alone in its extensive use of new "anthropometric" data--information about height, weight and body mass index that indicates changes in nations' well-being. Consequently, Health and Welfare during Industrialization signals a new direction in economic history, a broader and more thorough understanding of what constitutes standard of living.

Exemplary Tales of Love and Tales of Disillusion (The Other Voice in Early Modern Europe), by María de Zayas y Sotomayor

At the height of María de Zayas’s popularity in the mid-eighteenth century, the number of editions in print of her work was exceeded only by the novels of Cervantes.  But by the end of the nineteenth century, Zayas had been excluded from the Spanish literary canon because of her gender and the sociopolitical changes that swept Spain and Europe. Exemplary Tales of Love and Tales of Disillusion gathers a representative sample of seven stories, which features Zayas’s signature topics—gender equality and domestic violence—written in an impassioned tone overlaid with conservative Counter-Reformation ideology. This edition updates the scholarship since the most recent English translations, with a new introduction to Zayas’s entire body of stories, and restores Zayas’s author’s note and prologue, omitted from previous English-language editions. Tracing her slow but steady progress from notions of ideal love to love’s treachery, Exemplary Tales of Love and Tales of Disillusion will restore Zayas to her rightful place in modern letters.

Reading History Sideways: The Fallacy and Enduring Impact of the Developmental Paradigm on Family Life (Population and Development Series)

European and American scholars from the eighteenth through the mid-twentieth centuries thought that all societies passed through the same developmental stages, from primitive to advanced. Implicit in this developmental paradigm—one that has affected generations of thought on societal development—was the assumption that one could "read history sideways." That is, one could see what the earlier stages of a modern Western society looked like by examining contemporaneous so-called primitive societies in other parts of the world.

In Reading History Sideways, leading family scholar Arland Thornton demonstrates how this approach, though long since discredited, has permeated Western ideas and values about the family. Further, its domination of social science for centuries caused the misinterpretation of Western trends in family structure, marriage, fertility, and parent-child relations. Revisiting the "developmental fallacy," Thornton here traces its central role in changes in the Western world, from marriage to gender roles to adolescent sexuality. Through public policies, aid programs, and colonialism, it continues to reshape families in non-Western societies as well.

Review
"Reading History Sideways is an intellectual feast. Arland Thornton systematically and meticulously reviews the conceptual frameworks that have been used to study family histories and the forces in history that have shaped family life and family values. Remarkable in its breadth and depth, Thornton's contribution lies in his assessment of sophisticated theoretical models and insights about family history, blended with a detailed review of cross-national empirical evidence." (Calvin Goldscheider, Brown University)

"An exceptional work. Thornton's intellectual breadth is remarkable, as is the creativity of his argument and the evidence he marshals for it. His ideas are strikingly original and extremely important, and his argument is careful and thoughtful. This book should be read by policymakers, members of the diplomatic community, those connected with the World Bank or the International Monetary Fund, heads of NGOs working around the world, family planning organizations, and anyone concerned with America's role as a world leader." (Linda Waite, University of Chicago)

"Reading History Sideways is an intellectual gem from one of America's leading family sociologists. Arland Thornton convincingly demonstrates that theorizing about the processes of family change over several centuries was based upon faulty evidence drawn not from past history, but from contemporary 'primitive' societies. The resulting notion that there is a developmental sequence from extended to nuclear family living has been extraordinarily influential. Hopefully this new book will finally undermine the intellectual dominance of the developmental paradigm in studying family change." (Martin K. Whyte, Harvard University)

"The importance of this book is that it shows the enduring power of widespread and shared misconceptions of progress-both how progress is conceptualized and how it occurs. We learn that despite fatal flaws in the developmental model, it was exported far beyond Europe. Thornton wisely documents only one aspect of the developmental model, the assumed history of western family structure, a focus which permits him to provide abundant and convincing evidence. His book suggests that others might follow his example and examine whether there are also misconceptions about democracy and women's rights as routes to success." (Susan C. Watkins, University of Pennsylvania)

"This is a much needed book about powerful conceptual frameworks that have been profoundly influential for centuries. . . . An impressive cultural tour de force. Reading History Sideways should be compulsory reading for any scholar working on families, especially demographers and family historians." (Silvia Sovic Population Studies)
