The Fabric of the Heavens: The Development of Astronomy and Dynamics, by Stephen Toulmin, June Goodfield

Conceived as three companion volumes that form an introduction to the central ideas of the modern natural sciences, these books—intelligent, informative, and accessible—are an excellent source for those who have no technical knowledge of the subject.

Praise for The Fabric of the Heavens:

"I cannot remember when I last went through a book, any book, with such all-devouring zest. What is more, even the most complex technicalities are reduced to a positively crystalline clarity: If I can understand them, anyone can. The Fabric of the Heavens is, in every sense of the word, an eye-opener."—Peter Green, The Yorkshire Post

"Not until the last chapter of the book is [the reader] allowed to think again wholly as a modern man has become accustomed, by common sense, to think. The discipline is admirably suited to the authors' task, and cunningly devised for the reader's edification—and, indeed, for his delight."—Physics Today

Praise for The Architecture of Matter:

"The Architecture of Matter is to be warmly recommended. It is that rare achievement, a lively book which at the same time takes the fullest possible advantage of scholarly knowledge."—Charles C. Gillespie, New York Times Book Review

"One is impressed by the felicity of the examples and by the lively clarity with which significant experiments and ideas are explained. . . . No other history of science is so consistently challenging."—Scientific American

Praise for The Discovery of Time:

"A subject of absorbing interest . . . is presented not as a history of science, but as a chapter in the history of ideas from the ancient Greeks to our own time."—Times Literary Supplement

Amazon.com Review
The story of our relationship with the stars and their celestial cousins is long, involving, and full of surprises. The Fabric of the Heavens, by science historians Stephen Toulmin and June Goodfield, outlines thinking about astronomy and dynamics from "pretheoretical" Babylonian times to the Newtonian revolution that seeded our modern conceptions of space. Fully integrating the two cultures of science and the humanities, the authors find evidence of new thinking in Milton's writing and medieval tapestries, as well as in classic scientific and prescientific works. Using language that is beautiful, compelling, and precise, they trace the threads of history that are woven into today's science (which, they predict, will find itself woven into something even more startlingly unrecognizable in years hence).

Why were the ancients so fascinated by the sky and stars? Interestingly, it seems that their concerns were mostly practical; theological significance took longer to attach itself to the patterns up above. Agricultural and navigational concerns, once resolved, gave way to deeper philosophical, mythological, and religious curiosity--which used the mathematical tools of its predecessors to great effect. The lives and works of Aristotle, Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton are all thoroughly explored, and it is easier to see the continuity between them and their contemporaries in the breadth of this writing. Published in 1962, The Fabric of the Heavens was one of the first postmodern studies of the development of physical science; even were it not such a pleasure to read, it would still merit careful study. --Rob Lightner

amazing
By Diana Nier
"The Fabric of the Heavens" is the first in a series of three books, written in the 1960s, that attempt to outline the development of modern scientific thought. This first book deals with astronomy and dynamics, and the union of those two disciplines that created our modern ideas of the universe, forces, motion, etc.
Toulmin and Goodfield begin in ancient Babylon, where highly accurate mathematical techniques were used to calculate the positions of heavenly bodies. They move through several periods of Greek thought, through the medieval period and the flourishing of Islamic scholarship, on through the Renaissance, up to Newton, past Einstein, and on to the middle of the twentieth century. They are careful to show how and why past astronomers and natural philosophers asked the questions they did, why things that today appear to be common sense were inconceivable in the past, and why obviously brilliant people explained the world in ways we now see as misguided.
"The Fabric of the Heavens" is an amazing book, especially because of Toulmin and Goodfield's ability to make complex ideas clear to those of us who aren't physicists or astronomers. I was, however, somewhat dissatisfied near the end. Toulmin and Goodfield, while skilled at explaining the distant past, seem a bit slapdash describing the first half of the twentieth century, and, of course, do not describe the second half at all. The book also has a highly Western focus, probably because cosmological ideas in other parts of the world did not directly affect the development of modern science.
Nevertheless, "The Fabric of the Heavens" is fascinating, well-written, and enjoyable. I highly recommend it.

Describing the Fabric of the Heavens through the development of Astronomy and Dynamics
By Cosmas Topographicos
"All of planetary dynamics was a mess until Copernicus showed up, right? Sweeping away all Ptolmey's epicycles and deferents, he single-handedly gave birth to the modern conception of a Sun-centered planetary system. Right? Well, not exactly." Ryan Wyatt
*

Unfortunately, the history of astronomy didn't proceed along such a simple path. The story of our relationship with the stars and their celestial kins is ancient, fascinating, and full of awe. Stephen Toulmin and June Goodfield, outline the history of celestial thinking from Egyptian and Babylonian times to the Newtonian Copernician revolution that erupted into our visualization of the Y2K space.

The lives and works of Aristotle, Philoponus, Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton are duely explored, linking them into a geometric progression. Until Kepler, Sun-centered calculations provided no better fit to observational data than Earth-centered models. Copernicus's revolution in fact required decades to gain momentum, and the first standard-bearers favored only his mathematics over the older systems.

The Fabric of the Heavens is, in every sense of the word, an eye-opener. It was a first volume in a four-volume series, The Ancestry of Science: an introduction to the development of astronomy and its dynamics. The writers explore the contribution of the sciences, surveying noteworthy philosophical accounts of the scientific enterprise, the nature of theories, and the growth of scientific knowledge to early cosmological thinking.

Concentrating on the background of ancient science, ranging from the beginnings of celestial forecasting in Sumeria to the influences of Newton's thought on an evolving science. The writers use a compelling scientific and precise language to trace the history of ideas that made today's science. They develop the main concepts in philosophy of science, present science as an intellectual process that changed and promoted philosophy.

Stephen Toulmin is a British philosopher, and science historian, born in 1922, was influenced by Ludwig Wittgenstein, at Cambridge University. He was Professor at University of Southern California, was known for seminal work in modeling arguments and developing the case for the Return to Reason, vs. Rationality. He is the author of some twenty books, in those domains.

Hack: Stories from a Chicago Cab (Chicago Visions and Revisions), by Dmitry Samarov

Cabdrivers and their yellow taxis are as much a part of the cityscape as the high-rise buildings and the subway. We hail them without thought after a wearying day at the office or an exuberant night on the town. And, undoubtedly, taxi drivers have stories to tell—of farcical local politics, of colorful passengers, of changing neighborhoods and clandestine shortcuts. No one knows a city’s streets—and thus its heart—better than its cabdrivers. And from behind the wheel of his taxi, Dmitry Samarov has seen more of Chicago than most Chicagoans will hope to experience in a lifetime.

An artist and painter trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Samarov began driving a cab in 1993 to make ends meet, and he’s been working as a taxi driver ever since. In Hack: Stories from a Chicago Cab, he recounts tales that will delight, surprise, and sometimes shock the most seasoned urbanite. We follow Samarov through the rhythms of a typical week, as he waits hours at the garage to pick up a shift, ferries comically drunken passengers between bars, delivers prostitutes to their johns, and inadvertently observes drug deals. There are long waits with other cabbies at O’Hare, vivid portraits of street corners and their regular denizens, amorous Cubs fans celebrating after a game at Wrigley Field, and customers who are pleasantly surprised that Samarov is white—and tell him so. Throughout, Samarov’s own drawings—of his fares, of the taxi garage, and of a variety of Chicago street scenes—accompany his stories. In the grand tradition of Nelson Algren, Saul Bellow, Mike Royko, and Studs Terkel, Dmitry Samarov has rendered an entertaining, poignant, and unforgettable vision of Chicago and its people.

Review
"Samarov captures the most shocking and, sometimes, quietly poignant tales. . . . When chatty barflies, clandestine drug buyers, inebriated sports fans, and prostitutes mentally preparing for johns pour out to their cab driver on a nightly basis, the truth is stranger than fiction." (TimeOut Chicago 2011-07-26)

“Fact: I first rode in Dmitry’s cab when he was driving in Boston in 1993. He owned the first cellular phone that I ever saw, and he has been broadcasting back from the strange frontier of hack life ever since. He’s a good driver, but more than that, he’s as skilled a navigator of the forgotten American city as you’ll find, and his writing is funny, grim, humane, and welcome.”

(John Hodgman, author of More Information than You Require 2010-02-15)

“Nobody dreams of being a cabdriver but many of us get sidetracked. Dmitry Samarov, an art school grad, is one such lost soul. This book, which combines his passion and his detour, is an evocative and accurate look at the life of a big city hack. Drop a few extra bills over the front seat. Mr. Samarov rates a sizable tip.” (Jack Clark, author of Nobody’s Angel)

“Hack is one man’s witness to a contrary, luminous, and difficult city. Samarov’s city is also Algren’s city, Terkel’s city, Royko’s city. . . . Except Dmitry Samarov gets closer, moving while the city sleeps, and having an actual dialogue with its denizens; we take his journey, through the cruelties and comedies. Think of Zola—if he was driving a cab and had Samarov's mordant gallows humor and humanity as his guide. Dmitry Samarov testifies to our messy, contradictory, and vital city.”—Tony Fitzpatrick

(Tony Fitzpatrick)

"[Samarov's] book, organized by the days of the week, is thin and enveloping, full of the kind of insights only a veteran cab driver would have. . . . The book is also so attuned to the nuances of cab life, a thought repeatedly springs to mind as you read it: Your cab driver is aware of you. More than you realize."—Chicago Tribune

(Chicago Tribune)

"Samarov drives late afternoon and into the night, the best time to cull material to create his vibrant, detailed stories that would make Nelson Algren proud. He has that very Chicago knack for succinctly capturing the city’s neighborhoods and the characters that inhabit them."—Chicago Sun-Times

(Chicago Sun-Times)

“With Dmitry Samarov’s Hack: Stories from a Chicago Cab, the University of Chicago Press has produced a work about the Windy City that could not be grittier or more up-to-the-minute. . . . These vignettes constitute a work of ground-level urban sociology, showing parts of Chicago life that few novelists or academics could access.” (Barnes and Noble Review)

“Samarov not only writes insightful dialogue and reportage of cabbish interaction among his passengers and with himself, but also, following Tom Wolfe perhaps, has illustrated his short book with dozens of his own sketches that seem a combination of Ben Shahn and Reginald Marsh (especially in Dos Passos’s U.S.A.). They work wonderfully well with his prose.”
(Contemporary Sociology)

"Utterly addictive. . . . Samarov manages to capture the essential oddity of the ephemeral relationship between driver and fare, that fleeting intersection of guide and guided."
(TriQuarterly)

A slim volume of surprising depth and humanity
By Mighty Flynn
I was a bartender for fifteen years, and some of the smartest, most creative people I know work behind steering wheels and bars. But people who haven't spent time on that side of the service sector probably will be surprised when they read Samarov's debut, Hack: Stories From a Chicago Cab, because this slim volume unfolds with a complexity and humanity not often found in memoirs twice its size.

Organized by days (Monday - Sunday), Hack is illustrated throughout with Samarov's distinctive drawings and paintings. His writing style is straightforward and spiked with keen observations. He describes the people he encounters during a typical week--fares, other cabbies, cops--with empathy, even when their actions or speech make the reader squirm.

Mostly, Samarov drives and listens. His ear for dialogue is as finely tuned as his painter's eye, and the passengers he quotes (and paints) are sometimes funny and sometimes pathetic. They are drunk or high or horny; racist, arrogant, or wise. It's his job to deliver them to point B, and that's what he does, listening to them while the meter runs, choosing his spoken words carefully, if at all.

He also shares the drudgery of the job, the long waits for fares at the airport and for mechanical repairs at the garage. Between bouts with boredom and hectic traffic and obnoxious fares, moments of inspiration and humanity and humor come along in unexpected places at unexpected times. One of the most surprising stories involves a pair of amorous Cubs fans en route from Wrigleyville to their suburban home in Downer's Grove.

Hack helped me gain a new appreciation for cabbies, generally, and Dmitry Samarov, the artist, specifically. In about 125 pages of selective accounts of the people he encounters on the job, he is revealed more honestly than most memoirists are in several hundred pages of soul-baring testimony. It's the sense of dignity he brings to these pages, I think, that sets his book apart. He avoids pronouncements and often keeps his thoughts about the people he encounters to himself, choosing instead to allow the reader to come to our own conclusions. In that way, we learn about the cabbie/author as we learn about ourselves. It's a surprising, complicated, revelatory ride.

Very clever, witty and worth reading
By nvolf
What a surprisingly good book this turned out to be. I read it one Sunday afternoon and enjoyed so much. The writing it clever and witty and the short episodes the writer describes are so easy to visualize and understand deeply. It has a very authentic feel, a reality to what life is like for all sorts of different people. A few episodes had me laughing hard and long. Some made me think long and hard. I recommend it highly. You won't be disappointed.

Don't.
By close reader
Page 4 begins, "These are the people who relieve you of your money." WHO are the people? There's nothing before or after this to indicate whom he's talking about. I read bits throughout the book and found them dull. I'm not going to proceed in a book that hasn't even been proofread through page 4. The drawings are ugly.

Quantum Field Theory in Curved Spacetime and Black Hole Thermodynamics (Chicago Lectures in Physics), by Robert M. Wald

In this book, Robert Wald provides a coherent, pedagogical introduction to the formulation of quantum field theory in curved spacetime. He begins with a treatment of the ordinary one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator, progresses through the construction of quantum field theory in flat spacetime to possible constructions of quantum field theory in curved spacetime, and, ultimately, to an algebraic formulation of the theory. In his presentation, Wald disentangles essential features of the theory from inessential ones (such as a particle interpretation) and clarifies relationships between various approaches to the formulation of the theory. He also provides a comprehensive, up-to-date account of the Unruh effect, the Hawking effect, and some of its ramifications. In particular, the subject of black hole thermodynamics, which remains an active area of research, is treated in depth.

This book will be accessible to students and researchers who have had introductory courses in general relativity and quantum field theory, and will be of interest to scientists in general relativity and related fields.

I had hoped this would be an affordable substitute for Birrell and Davies. Unfortunately, it is no substitute. The presentation is very sketchy and abstract. If you are into algebraic QFT and that sort of stuff then maybe you will like this book more than I did.

Moved , by Love: Inspired Artists and Deviant Women in Eighteenth-Century France, by Mary D. Sheriff

In eighteenth-century France, the ability to lose oneself in a character or scene marked both great artists and ideal spectators. Yet it was thought this same passionate enthusiasm, if taken to unreasonable extremes, could also lead to sexual deviance, mental illness--even death. Women and artists were seen as especially susceptible to these negative consequences of creative enthusiasm, and women artists, doubly so.

Mary D. Sheriff uses these very different visions of enthusiasm to explore the complex interrelationships among creativity, sexuality, the body and the mind in eighteenth-century France. Drawing on evidence from the visual arts, literature, philosophy, and medicine, she portrays the deviance ascribed to both inspired men and women. But while various mythologies worked to normalize deviance in male artists, women had no justification for their deviance. For instance, the mythical sculptor Pygmalion was cured of an abnormal love for his statue through the making of art. He became a model for creative artists, living happily with his statue come to life. No happy endings, though, were imagined for such inspired women writers as Sappho and Heloise, who burned with erotomania their art could not quench. Even so, Sheriff demonstrates, the perceived connections among sexuality, creativity, and disease also opened artistic opportunities for creative women took full advantage of them.

Brilliantly reassessing the links between sexuality and creativity, artistic genius and madness, passion and reason, Moved by Love will profoundly reshape our view of eighteenth- century French culture.

Excellent! But this is not a fast read, it is a deep look at the life of Denys Finch Hatton.
By Note
Not a fast read, but it was an interesting read. It is very detailed. Lots of information about Africa in the 1920's. Lots of detailed research. This is a remarkable book about a remarkable time and man. Denys Finch Hatton was a complicated person and an unusual man: a great hunter, a great friend, a loyal brother, a brave and noble soldier, a pilot, but appeared to be fearful or reluctant to make a love commitment. Highly recommended. This book deserves an A++++++

By Karen Pasternack
I have lived in Africa for many years, first as a wife then after my husband passed I became an R.N. and did missionary work there.
Isak Dinesen became my mentor and heroine. Her love affair with Denise Finch-Hatton is a beautiful bitter-sweet true story.
This book tells his side of the perceived love story. Great read.

Invisible Hands: Self-Organization and the Eighteenth Century, by Jonathan Sheehan, Dror Wahrman

Why is the world orderly, and how does this order come to be? Human beings inhabit a multitude of apparently ordered systems—natural, social, political, economic, cognitive, and others—whose origins and purposes are often obscure. In the eighteenth century, older certainties about such orders, rooted in either divine providence or the mechanical operations of nature, began to fall away. In their place arose a new appreciation for the complexity of things, a new recognition of the world’s disorder and randomness, new doubts about simple relations of cause and effect—but with them also a new ability to imagine the world’s orders, whether natural or manmade, as self-organizing. If large systems are left to their own devices, eighteenth-century Europeans increasingly came to believe, order will emerge on its own without any need for external design or direction.

In Invisible Hands, Jonathan Sheehan and Dror Wahrman trace the many appearances of the language of self-organization in the eighteenth-century West. Across an array of domains, including religion, society, philosophy, science, politics, economy, and law, they show how and why this way of thinking came into the public view, then grew in prominence and arrived at the threshold of the nineteenth century in versatile, multifarious, and often surprising forms. Offering a new synthesis of intellectual and cultural developments, Invisible Hands is a landmark contribution to the history of the Enlightenment and eighteenth-century culture.

“A fascinating exploration of the proliferating logics of self-organization across various Enlightenment discourses, ranging from metaphysics and political economy to botany, mathematics, and epistemology.” (Immanent Frame)

“Even if it was not his original intention, Marx . . . signaled the existence of a manifold phenomenon—economic theology. Recovering its eighteenth-century history demands the same critical rigor that Wahrman and Sheehan so admirably employ in their survey of self-organization.” (Modern Intellectual History)

“The key concept [of self-organization] develops a broad and enlightening link in the study between such disparate discursive fields as psychology, biology, mathematics and probability theory, political theory, and financial economics. . . . A detailed and thoughtfully structured work.” (Merkur)

“Jonathan Sheehan is a gifted intellectual historian; Dror Wahrman, an accomplished cultural historian. They have combined their talents and approaches here to achieve one of the richest recent books on the origins of how we moderns reason.”
(New Rambler)

“The deep research and the breadth of learning on display in Invisible Hands are impressive. . . . Sheehan and Wahrman have done a great service by identifying a central topos and a veritable state of mind in eighteenth-century European life. Not only specialists of the eighteenth century but all historians of science and math, economic historians, and specialists of moral philosophy will reap rewards from this intelligent book.” (American Historical Review)

“The authors have provided a fascinating view into the growing culture behind the idea of divine order in the eighteenth century.” (Journal of Interdisciplinary History)

“Invisible Hands is a landmark piece of work, a brilliant excavation of eighteenth-century patterns of thought. Sheehan and Wahrman demonstrate in a virtuoso manner that eighteenth-century thinkers came to discern the same fundamental quality of self-organization at work in many different systems. The authors often wax lyrical, beautifully so, in their exploration of their topic, and do not shy away from posing questions of profound philosophical import. This book will cause a stir.” (David A. Bell, Princeton University)

“Sheehan and Wahrman offer exciting insights into the discourses of order and self-organization, which informed such disparate domains as the emerging life sciences, concepts of human cognition, politics, and economics. The reader is skillfully guided on a complex journey of discovery, at times through arcane archives, which are opened up for new and creative uses. Enjoyably witty, this is a most engaging read for anybody interested in the intersections of intellectual and cultural history.” (Dorothea E. von Mücke, Columbia University)

“Free markets; non-linear systems; chaotic dynamics: our world seems always at the mercy of uncertainty but still mysteriously orderly. Sheehan and Wahrman ingeniously locate the origins of our anxieties about self-organization in the busy, bruising world of the early Enlightenment. Invisible Hands is itself something of a miracle of organization, drawing together the histories of theology and botany, political economy and epistemology, mechanics and medicine, into an unsettling but strangely satisfying whole.” (David Armitage, Harvard University)

The Handle: A Parker Novel (Parker Novels), by Richard Stark

Parker, the ruthless antihero of Richard Stark’s eponymous mystery novels, is one of the most unforgettable characters in hardboiled noir. Lauded by critics for his taut realism, unapologetic amorality, and razor-sharp prose style—and adored by fans who turn each intoxicating page with increasing urgency—Stark is a master of crime writing, his books as influential as any in the genre. The University of Chicago Press has embarked on a project to return the early volumes of this series to print for a new generation of readers to discover—and become addicted to.

In The Handle, Parker is enlisted by the mob to knock off an island casino guarded by speedboats and heavies, forty miles from the Texas coast.

"Parker . . . lumbers through the pages of Richard Stark’s noir novels scattering dead bodies like peanut shells. . . . In a complex world [he] makes things simple.”—William Grimes, New York Times

“Whatever Stark writes, I read. He’s a stylist, a pro, and I thoroughly enjoy his attitude.”—Elmore Leonard

“Westlake knows precisely how to grab a reader, draw him or her into the story, and then slowly tighten his grip until escape is impossible.”—Washington Post Book World

“Donald Westlake’s Parker novels are among the small number of books I read over and over. Forget all that crap you’ve been telling yourself about War and Peace and Proust—these are the books you’ll want on that desert island.”—Lawrence Block

Review
“Parker is refreshingly amoral, a thief who always gets away with the swag.”
(Stephen King Entertainment Weekly)

“Parker . . . lumbers through the pages of Richard Stark’s noir novels scattering dead bodies like peanut shells. . . . In a complex world [he] makes things simple.”
(William Grimes New York Times)

“Whatever Stark writes, I read. He’s a stylist, a pro, and I thoroughly enjoy his attitude.”
(Elmore Leonard)

“Richard Stark’s Parker novels . . . are among the most poised and polished fictions of their time and, in fact, of any time.”
(John Banville Bookforum)

“Parker is a true treasure. . . . The master thief is back, along with Richard Stark.”
(Marilyn Stasio New York Times Book Review)

“Westlake knows precisely how to grab a reader, draw him or her into the story, and then slowly tighten his grip until escape is impossible."
(Washington Post)

“Elmore Leonard wouldn’t write what he does if Stark hadn’t been there before. And Quentin Tarantino wouldn’t write what he does without Leonard. . . . Old master that he is, Stark does all of them one better.”
(Los Angeles Times)

“Donald Westlake’s Parker novels are among the small number of books I read over and over. Forget all that crap you’ve been telling yourself about War and Peace and Proust—these are the books you’ll want on that desert island.”
(Lawrence Block)

“Richard Stark writes a harsh and frightening story of criminal warfare and vengeance with economy, understatement and a deadly amoral objectivity—a remarkable addition to the list of the shockers that the French call roman noirs.”
(Anthony Boucher New York Times Book Review)

"Parker is a brilliant invention. . . . What chiefly distinguishes Westlake, under whatever name, is his passion for process and mechanics. . . . Parker appears to have eliminated everything from his program but machine logic, but this is merely protective coloration. He is a romantic vestige, a free-market anarchist whose independent status is becoming a thing of the past."
(Luc Sante New York Review of Books)

"I wouldn't care to speculate about what it is in Westlake's psyche that makes him so good at writing about Parker, much less what it is that makes me like the Parker novels so much. Suffice it to say that Stark/Westlake is the cleanest of all noir novelists, a styleless stylist who gets to the point with stupendous economy, hustling you down the path of plot so briskly that you have to read his books a second time to appreciate the elegance and sober wit with which they are written."
(Terry Teachout Commentary)

"If you're a fan of noir novels and haven't yet read Richard Stark, you may want to give these books a try. Who knows? Parker may just be the son of a bitch you've been searching for."
(John McNally Virginia Quarterly Review)

"The University of Chicago Press has recently undertaken a campaign to get Parker back in print in affordable and handsome editions, and I dove in. And now I get it."
(Josef Braun Vue Weekly)

"Whether early or late, the Parker novels are all superlative literary entertainments."
(Terry Teachout Weekly Standard)

Another Great Parker Novel
By Chris Ward
I gotta disagree with the reviewer below-- this is one of the best Parkers. "The Handle" (otherwise known as "Run Lethal") is from the era of the real "classics" in the series, and it's terse and nasty and unpredictable. Yes, it features Grofield, an actor who moonlights as a heistman with Parker-- he's kind of the un-Parker, and some don't like him. He starred in four novels written by Stark/Westlake, and I agree that they're not quite up to the brutal standards of the early Parkers in the amorality stakes (but I still like them a lot).

Here, Grofield doesn't dominate the book, just takes a role as a part of the string Parker's assembling. He's a pro, and Parker can count on him. The book works well as a prelude to "Butcher's Moon," where Parker and Grofield find themselves in a similar situation.

Never read a Parker novel? Try this or any of the books from the Sixties: they're stripped-down, no-frills action novels, and Stark/Westlake does it better than almost anybody else.

Parker Helps the Mob
By Opa Wayne
I enjoy Richard Stark's (a.k.a. Donald Westlake) Parker novels for several reasons. The Parker character is a strong "anti-hero" who the reader wants to succeed. Parker's plans for his capers are normally brilliant if executed well. Some unexpected interference always causes Parker to improvise during the operation. Parker tends to survive despite the serious complications, but never gets rich enough to retire.

In "The Handle", Parker gets an unusual new challenge. The mob wants to hire him to rob a competitor. This guy, who calls himself Baron, bought an island in the Gulf of Mexico more that forty miles off the coast of Texas. The Baron built a fancy casino and pleasure resort and, since he is out of all legal jurisdictions, he sets his own rules. The Baron rakes in the money and the mob is left out. If Parker can steal all the Baron's money and destroy the casino, it may put the Baron out of business.

The island is like a fortress with very little access. Boats can approach in two small areas, both easy to protect. There is no suitable place to land an aircraft. The Baron and several highly trained, experienced security personnel live on the island and keep it under constant surveillance. Security has the latest equipment and weapons.

How can Parker manage this tough job? Considering Parker's habit of having brilliant plans go awry, what will happen this time? "The Handle" is a suspenseful novel with multiple actions scenes, interpersonal conflicts, and intrigue. I recommend this novel to those who love action thrillers.

The Nature of Scientific Evidence: Statistical, Philosophical, and Empirical ConsiderationsFrom University Of Chicago Press

An exploration of the statistical foundations of scientific inference, The Nature of Scientific Evidence asks what constitutes scientific evidence and whether scientific evidence can be quantified statistically. Mark Taper, Subhash Lele, and an esteemed group of contributors explore the relationships among hypotheses, models, data, and inference on which scientific progress rests in an attempt to develop a new quantitative framework for evidence. Informed by interdisciplinary discussions among scientists, philosophers, and statisticians, they propose a new "evidential" approach, which may be more in keeping with the scientific method. The Nature of Scientific Evidence persuasively argues that all scientists should care more about the fine points of statistical philosophy because therein lies the connection between theory and data.

Though the book uses ecology as an exemplary science, the interdisciplinary evaluation of the use of statistics in empirical research will be of interest to any reader engaged in the quantification and evaluation of data.

Review
"The book is a rare find: a source that could be used in graduate seminars in statistics, philosophy, or biology....It is brimming with ideas....It deserves a read by everyone."
(Marc Mangel Science 2004-11-26)

"This is a challenging, stimulating, and important book Although some of the chapters are not for the statistically naive, all are thorough and provocative....The Nature of Scientific Evidence should be read by all ecologists who interpret data as evidence for or against specific hypotheses."

(Gerry Quinn Trends in Ecology and Evolution 2005-04-01)

"The Nature of Scientific Evidence may well be viewed as a landmark publication in years to come, one that was the precursor to a new set of statistical methodologies based on evidence and likelihood. . . . We unreservedly recommend it to every ecologist wanting to understand more about the relationship between logic, evidence, analysis and inference – which, after all, constitutes the essence of the scientific method." (Graeme Hastwell and S. Raghu Austral Ecology)

"The book is important not because of its specific content, but because of what it represents: a cross-disciplinary dialogue that addresses key issues in data analysis." (Nicholas J. Gotelli Ecoscience)

"It is precisely because this nicely and carefully edited book will provide more questions than answers that it deserves to be read and discussed by the wide audience of statisticians, philosophers of science, and scientists to whom it addresses the important problem of the evaluation of scientific evidence." (Pablo Inchausti Quarterly Review of Biology)

"This volume is a wonderful guide helping ecologists to understand many of the statistical nuances as well as an introduction to some deep-rooted methodological and philosophical issues in data analysis. . . . An important and necessary discussion that ecologists need to have." (Marc W. Cadotte Biodiversity Conservation)

From the Inside Flap
"An important role of statistical analysis in science is for interpreting observed data as evidence—showing 'what the data say.' Although the standard statistical methods (hypothesis testing, estimation, confidence intervals) are routinely used for this purpose, the theory behind those methods contains no defined concept of evidence, and no answer to the basic question: 'When is it correct to say that a given body of data represents evidence supporting one statistical hypothesis over another?' or to its sequel: 'Can we give an objective measure of the strength of statistical evidence?'" From The Nature of Scientific Evidence

uhmmm...
By FG
This book has an interesting structure: each chapter is written by a different author who presents his/her ideas, which are then refuted, supported, improved or challenged by others, to finally let the author to submit a reply.

Unfortunately, this same structure lets the reader to appreciate strong contradictions between authors. More than a conversation between intelligent people (as says a reviewer of the book), it seems to be a conversation between confused people. Anyway, perhaps this is a manifestation of the current state of statistical ideas and the book gives readers an opportunity to form their own opinion.

It may be interesting to have this book as a reference, or for philosophical meditation but this is not a book for beginners.

Before this book, I would recommend to read the book "The Nature of Statistical Evidence" (Bill Thompson).

Very good!!
By Gustaf G
A good read for anyone in science. You don't need any previous knowledge in philosophy of science but some basic understanding about statistical methods is helpful. Since the book uses examples from ecology, this is a good book for ecologists, both graduate students and professors.

Terrible
By Robert Kaufman
When I bought this terrible book,I
really thought that it would clarify
all the different modern approaches
to statistics, but it did nothing of the kind.
I taught statistics for thirty five years, and
I can say with confidence that every
article in this book is horrible. Just in case I
wasn't clear, STAY AWAY FROM THIS
BOOK!
