Political Theology: Four Chapters on the Concept of Sovereignty, by Carl Schmitt

Written in the intense political and intellectual tumult of the early years of the Weimar Republic, Political Theology develops the distinctive theory of sovereignty that made Carl Schmitt one of the most significant and controversial political theorists of the twentieth century.

Focusing on the relationships among political leadership, the norms of the legal order, and the state of political emergency, Schmitt argues in Political Theology that legal order ultimately rests upon the decisions of the sovereign. According to Schmitt, only the sovereign can meet the needs of an "exceptional" time and transcend legal order so that order can then be reestablished. Convinced that the state is governed by the ever-present possibility of conflict, Schmitt theorizes that the state exists only to maintain its integrity in order to ensure order and stability. Suggesting that all concepts of modern political thought are secularized theological concepts, Schmitt concludes Political Theology with a critique of liberalism and its attempt to depoliticize political thought by avoiding fundamental political decisions.

Review
"Political Theology is about the nature, and thus about the prerogatives, of sovereign political authority in the West.... It is perhaps the piece that best serves as an introduction to Schmitt's thought." - from the Foreword by Tracy B. Strong"

About the Author
Carl Schmitt (1888–1985) was a legal theorist, political philosopher, and the author of Legality and Legitimacy, On the Three Types of Juristic Thought, Political Romanticism, Nomos of the Earth, Roman Catholicism and Political Form, Crisis of Parliamentary Democracy, and The Concept of the Political, the last available from the University of Chicago Press.

Insightful, Well-translated
By Amol Shelat
After many years, Carl Schmitt's works have finally reached the shores of the English-speaking world. Having been isolated by much of the scholarly community due to his complicity and support for Nazi Germany, it is only in recent decades that his works have garnered interest.

Ideas

Political Theology, like many of his most famous works, was written during a prolific period of his life in Weimar Germany. Indeed, this book bears the marks and concerns of the fragile political system in which he lived. Disenchanted with parliamentary democracy and the legal reasoning of his time, Schmitt develops in this book a devastatingly sharp critique of liberal democracy and legal normativism--a critque which has become very pertinent to our current political climate (2006).

In place of this, Schmitt probes into the historical and ideological framework of the state and politics so as to discover its essential characteristics, which he argues is defined and circumscribed by the exception. In short, the exception is a moment of true decision by a soveriegn, by which the legal norm is created. For, as the famous opening lines of the book proclaim, "Sovereign is he who decides on the exception."

Translation and Introduction

Now, George Schwab has done an excellent translation of this work so as to make it clear and readable. As such, I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Carl Schmitt, early 20th century political theory, Weimar Germany, or recent political works by Giorgio Agamben and Chantal Mouffe. Moreover, I also recommend reading the foreword and introduction, which provide a clear and succint overview of Schmitt's political theory.

Lastly, Schmitt's works are not very accessible to a quick reading. I recommend going over this book very carefully and thoroughly--best not before bedtime. I would also recommend his other works. I have found Schmitt to be terribly and sometimes frightfully insightful and believe that his ideas are essential to understanding modern political institutions, practices, and ideology.

but it makes some good claims about the nature of sovereignty
By Ashley Nicole Misee
Your gut reaction will be not to buy this because it was written by a Nazi. Ignore your initial reaction...I don't agree with this book in its entirety, but it makes some good claims about the nature of sovereignty.

Taking Exception
By Signs and Wonders
This book was becoming too influential to remain out of print for long, and its first sentence alone --"sovereign is he who decides on the exception"-- has likely been cited by more scholars than have ever actually read the second sentence. Still, though influenced by second-hand readings of Schmitt, most scholars manage to get quite a bit right about Schmitt's thesis, if only because it is simple, aphoristic and open-ended. Whatever its merits-- and there are many-- there is much to take exception with in Schmitt's book and in the concepts it has influenced. The notion of "the exception" requires particularly rigorous clarification because it has too often been elevated to the political-theological realm, been imbued with a fierce alterity or normless negativity, and sometime de-secularized as an equivalent of a miracle. Part of this is conflation of two senses of "exceptional": (1) "Norm vs. exception", which is a juridical distinction; and (2) the notion of "ordinary vs. extraordinary," which is more of a cultural or aesthetic distinction. The first of these-- the more banal definition-- is the one that is relevant to legal issues [OED: "The action of excepting (a person or thing, a particular case) from the scope of a proposition, rule, etc.; the state or fact of being so excepted. Something abnormal or unusual; contrasted with the rule"]. In political-theological terms, however, "The exception in jurisprudence is analogous the miracle in theology." Carl Schmitt, Political Theology: Four Chapters On The Concept Of Sovereignty (Cambridge: MIT Press, 1985), 36. This is fine as an analogy, but Schmitt-- elsewhere rigorous about separating politics, aesthetics, economics, etc.-- here drags "the miracle" back into the juridical realm. In this way Schmitt's theory that "Sovereign is he who decides [in and upon] the state of exception" can be rephrased in Weberian terms as the "charismatic" exceptional: a "certain quality" "not accessible to the ordinary person." The personal qualities unique also claim that this person, in extraordinary times will be revealed to be the true sovereign. This lends itself to the unreflective conflation of the two senses of the word "exception" and inflects sovereignty with the cult of charisma.

Critical Terms for the Study of GenderFrom University Of Chicago Press

“Gender systems pervade and regulate human lives—in law courts and operating rooms, ballparks and poker clubs, hair-dressing salons and kitchens, classrooms and playgroups. . . . Exactly how gender works varies from culture to culture, and from historical period to historical period, but gender is very rarely not at work. Nor does gender operate in isolation. It is linked to other social structures and sources of identity.”

So write women’s studies pioneer Catharine R. Stimpson and anthropologist Gilbert Herdt in their introduction to Critical Terms for the Study of Gender, laying out the wide-ranging nature of this interdisciplinary and rapidly changing field. The sixth in the series of “Critical Terms” books, this volume provides an indispensable introduction to the study of gender through an exploration of key terms that are a part of everyday discourse in this vital subject.

Following Stimpson and Herdt’s careful account of the evolution of gender studies and its relation to women’s and sexuality studies, the twenty-one essays here cast an appropriately broad net, spanning the study of gender and sexuality across the humanities and social sciences. Written by a distinguished group of scholars, each essay presents students with a history of a given term—from bodies to utopia—and explains the conceptual baggage it carries and the kinds of critical work it can be made to do. The contributors offer incisive discussions of topics ranging from desire, identity, justice, and kinship to love, race, and religion that suggest new directions for the understanding of gender studies. The result is an essential reference addressed to students studying gender in very different disciplinary contexts.

Review
“This collection is nothing short of an intellectual feast for scholars in the social sciences and humanities. . . . Taken as a whole, the essays convey an impressive reflection of progress and intellectual courage from which readers already familiar with feminist inquiry will take inspiration. . . . Essential.”
(Choice)

“This modest title belies an extraordinary collection.  Featuring not only leading but founding scholars in the interdisciplinary field of women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, Critical Terms for the Study of Gender provides sophisticated genealogies of concepts that have transformed scholarship in the humanities and social sciences over the past four decades.  Illuminating conceptual limitations of traditional approaches to these topics, this volume demonstrates the importance of feminist and queer scholarship to an adequate understanding of the complexities of contemporary life.” (Mary Hawkesworth, Rutgers University)

Aesthetics of Renewal: Martin Buber's Early Representation of Hasidism as Kulturkritik, by Martina Urban

Martin Buber’s embrace of Hasidism at the start of the twentieth century was instrumental to the revival of this popular form of Jewish mysticism. Hoping to instigate a Jewish cultural and spiritual renaissance, he published a series of anthologies of Hasidic teachings written in German to introduce the tradition to a wide audience. In Aesthetics of Renewal, Martina Urban closely analyzes Buber’s writings and sources to explore his interpretation of Hasidic spirituality as a form of cultural criticism. For Buber, Hasidic legends and teachings were not a static, canonical body of knowledge, but were dynamic and open to continuous reinterpretation. Urban argues that this representation of Hasidism was essential to the Zionist effort to restore a sense of unity across the Jewish diaspora as purely religious traditions weakened—and that Buber’s anthologies in turn played a vital part in the broad movement to use cultural memory as a means to reconstruct a collective identity for Jews. As Urban unravels the rich layers of Buber’s vision of Hasidism in this insightful book, he emerges as one of the preeminent thinkers on the place of religion in modern culture.

Review
“Urban’s superb study combines remarkable erudition with refined interpretative skills in an innovative contribution to our understanding of the often elusive role of Hasidism in Martin Buber’s thought. Because her focus on Buber always points towards an evocative periphery, her book opens a field of larger relevance that will engage readers far beyond the circle of Buber scholars.”

(Asher D. Biemann, University of Virginia)

“Martina Urban’s Aesthetics of Renewal is an excellent work and certainly one of the most important books on Buber to appear in recent years. By bringing together Buber’s writings on Hasidism and Zionism, Urban allows Buber’s critical voice to speak once again in contemporary cultural conversations.”

(Leora Batnitzky, Princeton University)

“Martina Urban’s lucid and erudite study situates Martin Buber’s collections of Hasidic tales and teachings within the larger project of modern Jewish anthology-making and its effort to retrieve and revitalize Jewish spirituality. This book fills a lacuna in our knowledge of Jewish thought and literature in modernity, and makes an important, indispensable contribution to our understanding of modern Jewish theology as cultural criticism.”

(David M. Stern, University of Pennsylvania)

"Buber may yet teach us something about a Jewish vitality that can be renewed without searching for the authenticity of something naively essentialized, and it will be thanks to Urban if this possibility can be reconsidered as modeled by Buber." (Michael Zank Journal of Religion)

"Urban's Aesthetics of Renewal has done an invaluable  service to scholars not only of Buber but of the intellectual exchanges that defined fin-de-siecle culture, Zionism in its most creative phase, and modernism with all its deeply entrenched contradictions and inner dialectic. . . . Her book is lucid and accessible, well organized and impressively learned." (Asher Biemann Shofar)

"Urban convincingly frames the esthetics of Jewish renewal as anti-metaphysical and anti-historical discourse ala Nietzsche, with Hasidism acting as the vital bridge between Apollonian form-appearance-illusion and Dionysian ecstatic experience. . . . Buber's early hasidica is brought into deep conversation with the German culture and intellectual currents that were contemporary to him." (Zachary Braiterman Religious Studies Review)

The Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica: A Herpetofauna between Two Continents, between Two Seas, by Jay M. Savage

World-renowned for its biological diversity and model conservation system, Costa Rica is home to a wide variety of amphibians and reptiles, from the golden toad to the scorpion lizard to the black-headed bushmaster. Jay M. Savage has studied these fascinating creatures for more than forty years, and in The Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica he provides the most comprehensive, up-to-date treatment of their biology and evolution ever produced.

Costa Rica has played, and continues to play, a pivotal role in the study of tropical biology as well as the development of ecotourism and ecoprospecting, in part because more than half of the amphibians and reptiles in Costa Rica are also found elsewhere in Central America. The Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica will be an essential book for a wide audience of nature lovers, naturalists, ecotourists, field biologists, conservationists, government planners, and those interested in Central America more generally.

From the Inside Flap
World renowned for its biological diversity and model conservation system, Costa Rica is home to a wide variety of amphibians and reptiles, from the golden toad to the scorpion lizard and the black-headed bushmaster. Jay M. Savage has studied these fascinating creatures for more than forty years, and in The Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica he provides the most comprehensive, up-to-date treatment of their biology and evolution ever produced.

Savage begins with detailed discussions of the natural and cultural history of Costa Rica, setting the stage for a detailed treatment of each of the 396 species of amphibians and reptiles that may be found there. Each species account synthesizes and analyzes everything that is known about the animal's anatomy, behavior, geographic distribution, systematics, and evolutionary history and provides keys for identifying amphibians and reptiles in the field. In addition to distribution maps and systematic and morphological illustrations, the book includes color photographs of almost every known species, many taken by the distinguished nature photographers Michael and Patricia Fogden.

Because Costa Rica has played, and continues to play, a pivotal role in the study of tropical biology as well as in the development of ecotourism and ecoprospecting, and because more than half of the amphibians and reptiles in Costa Rica are also found elsewhere in Central America, The Amphibians and Reptiles of Costa Rica will be an essential book for a wide audience of nature lovers, naturalists, ecotourists, field biologists, conservationists, and government planners.

About the Author

Between 2 continents and between 2 seas indeed
By Timothy Paine
I have been waiting for this book for over a year and it was well worth it. With over 40 years of 'herping' Costa Rica Jay Savage needs no introduction. Neither do the photographers Michael and Patricia Fogden. Their stunning images of the tropics and its reptiles and amphibians are everywhere. Costa Rica currently has 178 amphibian species and 218 reptile species. Additionally, there are two introduced frogs and four introduced lizards. Savage covers them all. In fact the subtitle covers it moreso. Nearly everything related to herps between two continents and between two seas is covered.
Savage states he wrote this book for several audiences: the general reader with an interest in biology and the herpetofauna, the amateur or part-time naturalist with some background in biology, the tropical biology and herpetolgy student, and the professional biologist. I would say that Savage has succeeded wildly in hitting his broad mark. The book is in four parts. The first gives the layperson a general background of biology, classification, and systematics. This also serves as a good refresher for those familiar with the terms or who is new to learning them. Savage tells us how to observe, where to look, how to catch, and how to preserve as specimens or keep as study subjects the diverse herpetofauna in Costa Rica. Included is a brief political history of Costa Rica. This is just the first chapter. He then describes, in depth, Costa Rica's climate, geography, and numerous habitats and vegetation patterns. Then we learn how to use the meat of this book; the keys.
Parts two and three are the keys to all the known amphibians and reptiles, respectively, of Costa Rica. These keys, broken into appropriate chapters are incredible. We get family descriptions, species accounts, descriptions of eggs, larvae, and adults, location maps, body part nomenclature, countless figures including tadpoles, tadpole mouthparts, body patterns, and headscale counts. This may all sound arcane to the uninitiated but it is invaluable to experts in identifying individual species. Beginners could forego some of this information and focus on more broad details to identify if the snake they saw was poisonous or the frog outside their cabin was a treefrog. Conversely, if you wanted to know the difference between Sibon annulatus and Sibon longifrenis it is in here. The words and drawings are backed up by over 500 color plates detailing nearly every species mentioned. Incredible considering the rarity of some species. There are stunning plates of habitats but mostly they are smallish (6 to a page) but excellent and very descriptive images of the animals. Where else would you find such detailed images of elusive caecelians and salamanders alongside the extinct golden toad Bufo periglenes, numerous and nondescript rain frogs, all the lacertid lizards, snakes, turtles, and crocodilians? Any single part of this text would prove useful. It is hard to believe that so much has been accomplished.
Part four gives us ecological and geographical distribution patterns, evolution and development of herpetofauna, and information of plate movements and land bridge formation. Savage then ends with his explanation of why there are so many species between two continents and between two seas. Included are an addendum, a 17 page glossary, a 50 page literature cited section(!), and two indices. This tome is over 900 pages. There is a ton of information here and the reader can pick and choose what they need or want to know. I haven't read this book cover to cover, yet. And, I am not an expert herpetologist. There certainly could be errors in species accounts but that would most likely be left for a few select individuals to argue over. What I can say is that this text would have easily been too big of a project for it to succeed or prove useful. Somehow, Savage manages it in such a way as to be a benchmark for herpetological texts and guides. I honestly can not say when I've been this excited about a book, although Duellman's Hylid Frogs reprint is a good second. There is much more to this book. Want to know? Buy it.
What this book is not is a field guide in the classic sense. This is a large hefty book. Not likely to be packed in the luggage of a vacationing tourist. If you will be spending some time conducting work in this beautiful country then find something else to leave behind and bring the book. If you are like me then read it before you leave and after you return. You'll know where to look for specific animals and also find it useful in identifying prized photos weeks after returning. If you are looking for a classic herping field guide then try Twan Leenders new book. It is pocket sized and has lots of useful info. Better still own them both.

Almost an encyclopedia

A large, heavy book, even in paperback. Good illustrations (mostly photos), a large quantity of information, not only on the reptiles and amphibians, but on Costa Rica itself, even to including a short political history. Great value for the price!

An Orchard Invisible: A Natural History of Seeds, by Jonathan Silvertown

The story of seeds, in a nutshell, is a tale of evolution. From the tiny sesame that we sprinkle on our bagels to the forty-five-pound double coconut borne by the coco de mer tree, seeds are a perpetual reminder of the complexity and diversity of life on earth. With An Orchard Invisible, Jonathan Silvertown presents the oft-ignored seed with the natural history it deserves, one nearly as varied and surprising as the earth’s flora itself.

Beginning with the evolution of the first seed plant from fernlike ancestors more than 360 million years ago, Silvertown carries his tale through epochs and around the globe. In a clear and engaging style, he delves into the science of seeds: How and why do some lie dormant for years on end? How did seeds evolve? The wide variety of uses that humans have developed for seeds of all sorts also receives a fascinating look, studded with examples, including foods, oils, perfumes, and pharmaceuticals. An able guide with an eye for the unusual, Silvertown is happy to take readers on unexpected—but always interesting—tangents, from Lyme disease to human color vision to the Salem witch trials. But he never lets us forget that the driving force behind the story of seeds—its theme, even—is evolution, with its irrepressible habit of stumbling upon new solutions to the challenges of life.

"I have great faith in a seed," Thoreau wrote. "Convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders." Written with a scientist’s knowledge and a gardener’s delight, An Orchard Invisible offers those wonders in a package that will be irresistible to science buffs and green thumbs alike.

From School Library Journal
Just as a seed contains the ability to create a whole plant, the evolution of seeds can serve as a microcosm for plant evolution. British ecology professor Silvertown (Demons in Eden: The Paradox of Plant Diversity) begins with a discussion of how seeds evolved to adapt plants to a fully terrestrial life when they emerged from the sea. In the process, he covers many relevant topics, including sexual and asexual reproduction, plant genetics, plant self-defense and seed dispersal, plant poisons, and seeds as food. The author also explains the coevolution of plants and animals, as in using and perceiving color. He covers some plant products humans use, such as sunflower oil, grain for beer, and coffee. Like Michael Pollan in The Botany of Desire, Silvertown cites historical attitudes and quotations about particular plants. But he focuses primarily on the science of plant evolution rather than human history or anecdote. Endnotes suggest further reading. Silvertown writes both elegantly and clearly, and the book is as pleasurable to read as it is informative. For academic and public library botany and natural history collections.—Marit S. Taylor, Auraria Lib., Denver

From Booklist
The author of Demons in Eden: The Paradox of Plant Diversity (2005) provides an informatively jocund jaunt through the life cycle of seeds. While rarely passing up a mirthful opportunity, Silvertown never digresses from dilating on the dynamics of natural selection in the evolution of seeds. Indeed, his account reads like a treasure hunt for evolutionary explanations of seed characteristics, such as their protective coverings. This aspect allows the introduction of botanists who have wondered about seeds and flowers, including fictional aficionados like Sherlock Holmes and characters from Shakespeare, of whom Silvertown typically takes leave with a witty adieu before spelling out the modern evolutionary interpretation of, for example, plant reproduction. Why that should be predominantly sexual rather than asexual isn’t readily apparent until Silvertown recounts the eternal contest between predator and prey that rules the evolutionary game. In like manner Silvertown considers traits favoring a seed’s survival from dispersal to germination. He concludes with a portrait of humanity’s favorite seed, the coffee bean. A pleasure to read, not least for biology mavens.

Review
“Seeds—familiar, mysterious, wonderful, endlessly fascinating, but rarely considered carefully. In this beautifully written popular exposition, Jonathan Silvertown brings seeds to life, illuminating their diversity, their amazing properties, their role in nature, evolution and fate over time, germination and fate in the life of an individual. To be read by all those interested in nature: they will gain deeper understanding from the lively words that trace these and many other aspects of these familiar structures.” (Peter H. Raven, director, Missouri Botanical Garden)

“An oak yields millions of acorns through its life, yet one survivor alone secures its line: natural selection acts most stringently on a seed. Here the author of Demons in Eden, with apt and at times hilarious quotation, explores how humanity has ingeniously exploited the extraordinary and complex devices by which plants, through their seeds, have surmounted competition. Beneath, we observe the relentless yet haphazard tide which is evolution.” (Peter Ashton, Harvard University)

For all its erudition, however, this is not an encyclopedia of botanical lore, nor a definitive text, but rather a little gem of science writing that deserves a spot on any natural history lover's bedside bookstand. . . . It is simply a delight to read.”

A gem, a delight and a storehouse of delicious information
By Dennis Littrell
I'm always on the lookout for books about food plants in their natural state detailing where those foods originated, and how those plants became domesticated and changed over time. "An Orchard Invisible" (the title is from the Welsh proverb "a seed hidden in the heart of an apple is an orchard invisible") is just such a book and one of the best I have ever read.

Just to give you an idea of how densely packed this beautifully written book is with fascinating information about seeds--and by extension food and human culture--consider these gems from just two pages:

"MSG occurs naturally in fermented soybean paste, which is the source of miso and soy sauce used to flavor Chinese and Japanese dishes." (p. 170)

"Flavor sensations are a complicated confection created in the brain from the combined inputs of all five senses." (And not just five tastes on the tongue and the myriad aromas that the nose detects.) (p. 170)

There is a berry from the West African tree Synsepalum dulcificum that contains "a protein that interferes with taste receptors in the tongue and causes sour foods to taste sweet." Unfortunately efforts to take commercial advantage of this berry failed because only fresh berries will do the trick. (p. 171)

"...[W]hite chocolate...has the sugar and cocoa butter but not the pharmacological compounds found in normal chocolate..." On the other hand, cocoa powder contains "all the pharmacological constituents and sugar found in a bar of chocolate, but without the cocoa butter." Using this information you can test yourself to find out if you love chocolate for the "mouth feel" of the velvety cocoa butter (absent in a cup of cocoa) or because of the buzz you get from theobromine (absent in white chocolate). (p. 171)

Here's more: sunflower seeds and many other plant seeds grown in northern latitudes contain less saturated oils than the same plants grown farther south. Why? "The answer seems to be that at lower temperatures, seeds whose oil stores are held in saturated form have difficulty germinating...probably because...at low temperatures saturated oils are not liquid enough for germinating seeds to use them. Unsaturated oils...are apparently easier to metabolize at lower temperatures, as you might expect from their lower melting points." (p. 144)

How about this: "in the mid-1970s it was found that orthodox Hindus who had been quite healthy on a vegan diet in their native India began to suffer from a high incidence of metaloblastic anemia after living for some time in England consuming the same diet. The cause was traced to vitamin B-12 deficiency, which in India was prevented by insect contamination of grains." (pp. 168-169) Let me add an exclamation mark to that gastronomic irony!

And this: Plants use a light-sensing molecule called phytochrome that can differentiate between light that has passed through leaves and light that has not, so that they can "sense where their neighbors are and to adjust their own growth so as to avoid them. Many seeds also use phytochrome in the same way and will germinate in darkness, but not if exposed to light that has passed through a leaf." (p. 123)

Masting, which is the name for the trick nut-bearing trees use to control the animals that eat their seeds, is a diabolic scheme whereby the tree produces a bumper crop one year filling everybody's tummy, and then for the next x number of years produces not much at all, starving the little critters to death. In this way during the bumper crop years the extra nuts get buried and forgotten or the burier dies, and in the lean years the nuts germinate sans foragers. (See Chapter 8 "Ten Thousand Acorns.")

"More than three thousand species [of plants]...have a fatty wart called an elaiosome attached to them that attracts ants in search of food. Patrolling ants that find such seeds do not detach the elaiosome there and then, but carry the whole seed back to their nest, where it is buried. Once the seed has been stripped of its elaiosome in the ant nest, the ants dump it in a viable state on a trash pile where it can germinate." (p. 112)

Some tidbits:

Coffee is originally from Ethiopia; sunflowers were first cultivated in North America; ricin is found in castor beans (hopefully not in castor oil!) and "is more toxic than cobra venom and has no known antidote (p. 126); some seeds are shaped so that with the help of a little wind are able to screw themselves into the ground all the better to germinate (see Chapter 11: "Circumstance Unknown"); the double coconut of the coco de mer of the Seychelles can weigh 50 pounds; the oldest seed ever to germinate is a two-thousand year old date seed (p. 113).

Silvertown, who is professor of ecology at the Open University in England, sprinkles the text with snippets from history and lines of poetry from Burns, Dickinson and others pertaining to seeds and things relating to seeds. The text is further augmented with some delicate and precise black, white and grey illustrations by Amy Whitesides, making the book a little gem, a delight and a storehouse of delicious information.

Seeds come to life
By Amazon Customer
An "Orchard Invisible" gives a very readable and accessible account of many aspects of seeds. How did seeds evolve? How and why do some seeds lie dormant for many years? Why are some seeds almost invisibly tiny, while the largest weighs 20 kg? Why are so many seeds poisonous? He guides the reader through the many uses of seeds - foods, oils, perfumes, pharmaceuticals.

There are also diverting accounts of seedy involvement in Lyme Disease, the Salem Witch trials, and the fatal neurological disease afflicting the native people of Guam, to list just a few of these tangential topics in the book. These stories are quite gripping.

In general the author strikes a good balance between readability and scientific rigour - "clear and engaging" and "a beautifully written popular exposition" according to the cover blurb. Botanical terminology is kept to a minimum so as not to turn off general readers. However, botanists may be frustrated by the occasional vague use of words such as "family." Does he mean the formal botanical "Family", or some other grouping?

The account of Mendel's work on inheritance requires close attention to follow the reasoning behind Mendel's experiments. But all the facts are there for those who want to puzzle it out for themselves.

Obviously much has to be omitted in a 216-page book, but it is a pity he leaves out the strawberry, whose myriad tiny seeds are entirely on the outside of the fruit. Nor does he describe the role of smoke in triggering germination. For many West Australian plants, habitat burning is the single most important cue for triggering germination of the dormant soil seed bank.

There are lengthy quotations of poetry and extracts from other writers, verging on being overdone. The few black and white illustrations look nice, but they are wholly decorative rather than complementing the text. An uncharitable reviewer might conclude that this material was included to bulk out the book so the buyer feels he or she is getting value for money.

The bibliography is extensive and thorough, and includes web references.

There are a number of typos and inconsistencies, but that is hardly unusual these days when editorial standards are in general decline.

The book is certainly worth buying. It will appeal to general readers, and also to readers with some scientific knowledge.

A gem full of seeds
By Philip Spriet
The market is swamped with books full of facts. Only a few of them manage to do more than copy paste some google search results and tell a fascinating story, express an original view or a come with a challenging vision. And it is the rare gem where this is combined with excellent editing, a real sense for humor (and not the saltless wordpuns other authors call humor), a right dose of erudition, and although from time to time quiet technical never in a way that the layman fleds away. Silvertown created such a gem. You don't have to be a naturalist or biologist or scientist to enjoy this book. And, go for the hardback, the way the book is layouted is worth the extra couple of dollars.

We elect officials in hopes that they will make our communities safer, yet their widely-endorsed law enforcement strategies have little effect on crime rates. Active crime prevention must take into account the diversity of crimes and criminals. High-quality evaluation research designs are needed to convince scholars, policy makers, and practitioners about the effectiveness of crime prevention techniques. Building a Safer Society, the most comprehensive exposition of research and experience concerning crime prevention ever published, offers a new conceptualization of the subject incorporating developmental, community, situational and law enforcement approaches. This timely collection will especially interest scholars in law, criminal justice, public policy and public administration.

The Complete Poems: The 1554 Edition of the

Gaspara Stampa (1523?-1554) is one of the finest female poets ever to write in Italian. Although she was lauded for her singing during her lifetime, her success and critical reputation as a poet emerged only after her verse was republished in the early eighteenth century. Her poetry runs the gamut of human emotion, ranging from ecstasy over a consummated love affair to despair at its end. While these tormented works and their multiple male addressees have led to speculation that Stampa may have been one of Venice’s famous courtesans, they can also be read as a rebuttal of typical assumptions about women’s roles. Championed by Rainer Maria Rilke, among others, she has more recently been celebrated by feminist scholars for her distinctive and original voice and her challenge to convention.

The first complete translation of Stampa into English, this volume collects all of her passionate and lyrical verse. It is also the first modern critical edition of her poems, and in restoring the original sequence of the 1554 text, it allows readers the opportunity to encounter Stampa as she intended. Jane Tylus renders Stampa’s verse in precise and graceful English translations, allowing a new generation of students and scholars of poetry, Renaissance literature, and music history to rediscover this incipiently modern Italian poet.
