Understanding the Amsterdam School

This book is a brilliantly researched work of great significance to the literature of 20th century housing in Europe. Part of four great housing movements of the 1920's including Vienna, Frankfurt and Berlin along with Amsterdam, together they tell an important story of housing by and for people. One of the best parts of this book is the guide at the end which shows all of the most important projects on a map with detailed information about each including the number of units, the architects and the housing society responsible for each. This will be come a classic in its field.

Nancy Stieber uses her book to describe the architectural changes that were made to housing and design throughout Amsterdam in the early 1900's. She touches on the importance of making these changes and how they affected both high and low class citizens. With the economy becoming more advanced, the standard housing needed improvements to keep up with the urbanization. For example, ventilation, sewage, and water supply needed improvements. Architects during this period were also working to even out the difference of the lifestyles among high and low class citizens. By improving the way the working class lived and cleaning up there housing situations, the economy would flourish. All together, Stieber is successful with getting these main points across. I recommend reading this book; it opens up your eyes to the beauty of structure and design in the buildings around you.
