About the Author
Gregory S. Stone is executive vice president and chief ocean scientist of Conservation International. He is the author of three books, including Antarctica: Ice Island. David Obura is founding director of the nonprofit research organization CORDIO. He is based in East Africa and works on coral reef research and conservation in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

A story of hope for the oceans

I learned about "Underwater Eden" at a lecture at the New England Aquarium given by the authors. The book has proven to be as compelling and interesting as the lecture that lead me to it. Given all the environmental problems facing the ocean today, it is a rare and wonderful treat to read about the Phoenix Islands, an "Underwater Eden" that is healthy, pristine and full of life. It was also heartening to read about the persistence of those committed to protecting the Phoenix Islands, despite the challenges they faced. Ultimately, this is a success story of ocean conservation, and hopefully a model for future efforts to protect the oceans. In addition, the writing is very engaging, and the book is full of stunning photos that capture the beauty of the wildlife and the people who inhabit the Phoenix Islands. I highly recommend this book!

This is a great read and a nice commentary on environmental actions that work! I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in the underwater world and conservation.

I would have liked more details

The only problem with this book is....it's too brief. I would have liked more details...and more pictures. Yeah, others might have been turned off by this book looking more like a textbook or a scientific report, but I would appreciate greater depth. Obviously, the editors had to make decisions on what to include and who would be buying and reading this book. Not an easy decision for them as the general public probably doesn't want much science. Still, who among the general public will bother to find and read this book? I bought this book from a library...really. And it's not that old. They didn't keep it long, did they? So, if the primary reader is someone very interested in the topic, more depth would have been appreciated.
I'm still giving the book 5 stars as it's great as far as it goes. Maybe the authors will do more in the future...and revise this book with more information as they collect it over the next decade.
