a fine book

It has a flaw or two, but all-in-all it's one of the best studies of "primitive" kinship in existence. Actually, I read it many years ago, shortly after it first appeared; but I wanted a fresh copy. I've been highly critical in print of many of the so-called "new kinship studies," but this is an exception: it's linguistically sophisticated, attends to native kinship ideas much more thoroughly than other "new kinship" pieces, and has none of their mind-numbing PC declarations about the evils of Western colonialism and the West in general.
