This history of the Carnegie libraries was written by an assistant professor of architecture, art history, and women's studies at the University of Arizona. A revision of the author's Ph.D. dissertation in architecture at the University of California at Berkeley, the work examines the funding, design, staffing, and use of monumental urban central libraries and more functional urban branch libraries and small-town libraries. This is interpreted in the context of the professionalization of both architecture and librarianship and of the role of class in the large urban areas and of gender in the small towns. Van Slyck's study is based on extensive archival research concentrating primarily on Carnegie libraries in 13 cities and towns in 11 states and includes numerous illustrations. In Free to All, however, Abigail Van Slyck shows that the classical facades and symmetrical plans of these buildings often mask the complex and contentious circumstances of their construction and use. Free to All is the first comprehensive social and architectural history of the Carnegie library phenomenon, an unprecedented program of philanthropy that helped erect over 1600 public library buildings in the United States. Van Slyck skillfully untangles the overlapping and conflicting motives of the many people involved in erecting, staffing, and using the libraries: Andrew Carnegie himself; small-town civic boosters avid for new investment; metropolitan library trustees anxious to maintain the elite character of urban libraries; architects reacting to increased professional specialization; a growing number of female librarians; and the children and adults, frequently immigrants, who came to borrow books.

A step in the history of the American public library

I had to read this book in library school a few years ago. It not only discusses Carnegie's motives but a number of the different Carnegie libraries across the country and the politics behind building these structures. While I'm not involved in public libraries myself, I feel that this book would be worthwhile reading for most if not all information/library students (because it IS a historical aspect of the information profession) and anyone who truly enjoys their own public library. The Carnegie structures are a legacy that links this effort across the country. If you grew up in a city with a Carnegie library, it's exciting to travel someplace else and look at its sibling; another library that wasn't just built but was developed under an intended global initiative. This book is a no-frills, excellent, easy to read description of this attempt.

A different side of Andrew Carnegie

I loved this book. A hometown Carnegie library played a significant part in my childhood, so the photos, the floor plans, and the descriptions of various Carnegie libraries brought back emotional memories, but there was far more here for me to savor. This is the other side of Andrew Carnegie, not the side that was the tough Scot steel mill owner of the bloody Homestead Strike, but that same Andrew Carnegie as he became the wealthy philanthropist who not only revolutionized the way charitable giving in the United States is organized and administered, but who also caused significant changes in the way American communities at the turn of the century thought about themselves, their surroundings, their values, their futures, their interconnectedness, their obligations to one another, and their ability to define and create the sort of place they wanted their town or city to be. As the author tells the story of how communities across the nation went about applying for a Carnegie library grant, and lays out the Carnegie philosophy which structured that process, the reader comes to understand just how much of American life - especially in Midwestern and Western towns - was actually shaped by this one man and his funding of more than 2700 libraries, and how much Carnegie's influence remains in Middle American communities to this day. The writing here is excellent, the story is a fascinating one, and the book is well worth reading.
