One of the most significant political philosophers of the twentieth century, Carl Schmitt is a deeply controversial figure who has been labeled both Nazi sympathizer and modern-day Thomas Hobbes. First published in 1938, The Leviathan in the State Theory of Thomas Hobbes used the Enlightenment philosopher’s enduring symbol of the protective Leviathan to address the nature of modern statehood. A work that predicted the demise of the Third Reich and that still holds relevance in today’s security-obsessed society, this volume will be essential reading for students and scholars of political science.
“Carl Schmitt is surely the most controversial German political and legal philosopher of this century. . . . We deal with Schmitt, against all odds, because history stubbornly persists in proving many of his tenets right.”—Perspectives on Political Science
“[A] significant contribution. . . . The relation between Hobbes and Schmitt is one of the most important questions surrounding Schmitt: it includes a distinct, though occasionally vacillating, personal identification as well as an association of ideas.”—Telos

Review
"Schwab's translation of Carl Schmitt's book on Hobbes has finally made available to the English-speaking world one of the most significant works of this controversial thinker. It is essential reading to anyone seeking an understanding of Schmitt's political and legal thought, his intellectual debt to Hobbes, and his relationship to the Nazi state." (Joseph W. Bendersky, Professor of History, Virginia Commonwealth University)

Interesting Study
By Steiner
Hobbes' Leviathan is perhaps the most important, and most enduring of political metaphors. The image of an absolute sovereign who has the ultimate authority to punish any enemy of the state has come to be a standard paradigm when considering the formal structure of political authority. Schmitt's brief text on Hobbes is a fascinating development in the course of his thinking on the concept of sovereignty--and it serves to adumbrate his position that Sovereign authority is constitutive of law and security. Politically, Schmitt was in many ways a disaster: this text is teeming with anti-Semitism just for starters, yet his analysis of sovereignty is an indispensable index of the historical and theoretical development of the concept of law and justice. Additionally, Schmitt provides an analysis of why Hobbes' political intervention ultimately failed during the tumultuous period of the English Civil War.

Great book
By James
This is a great book for anyone out there looking to understand Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan. I purchased this book from the recommendation of a professor as I was writing a large paper on Hobbes. Carl Schmitt does an excellent job of going through some of the basic principles of the Leviathan. As well as explaining a part of the book I never thought to think about an that is the meaning of the title. This is a great book as well as an easy read. Schmitt did an excellent job.
